3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 160)

Happy Friday, my fellow Android gamers, and welcome back to this weekly summary of the most interesting games I played this week :)
This episode includes an interesting action RPG that plays a lot like Diablo, a very unique multiplayer strategy card game, and a PvP fighting game from a franchise that has been downloaded more than 500 million times!
Disagree with my opinion? Let’s have a friendly discussion below.
New to these posts? Check out the first one from 159 weeks ago here.
The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

Let's get to the games:

Creatures of Aether [Game Size: 189 MB] (free)

Genre: Card / Strategy / PvP / Indie - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Portrait
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Creatures of Aether is a unique strategy card game where our goal is to dominate the majority of a shared 4x4 gridded board by placing a creature card from our hand on each turn.
Every card has a power number on each of its four sides. Placing a card next to an opponent’s card allows us to take it over and turn it into one of ours if the power number on our card’s side is higher than that on the opponent card’s adjacent side. Once the board is full, the player with the most cards on the board wins.
To spice things up, board tiles can have elemental types that buff or debuff any card placed on them, and some cards even have strong special powers that trigger once played. While the mechanics are easy to understand, the game is incredibly difficult to master, and I often found I had made a mistake a few turns ago that now put me in a disadvantageous situation, just like in chess.
Decks consist of eight cards, with a total deck-cost limit and a value on each card that increases the more powerful it is. This adds a nice forced prioritization that prevents us from placing all the strongest cards in the same hand.
The high-quality modern pixel art style is well-executed, and the sound design is pleasing. The main PvP mode is supported by multiple arcade modes and single-player dungeon-crawls that provide new cards or extra copies so existing cards can be leveled up.
Creatures of Aether monetizes through a $4.99 battle pass and iAPs for card packs, which create a pay-to-progress-faster advantage for paying players. However, the core gameplay is both deep and fun, and free players can still enjoy the many game-modes and simply grind for cards.

Raziel: Dungeon Arena [Total Game Size: 5.1 GB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Action / Co-op / Diablo-like - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Raziel: Dungeon Arena is a fun Diablo-like action RPG with solo and co-op dungeons, an insane amount of unique loot, neat 3D graphics, cute pets, and well-calibrated controls.
The game features 3 classes; archer, melee knight, ice priest, and although there is no character customization, we can at least switch build later in the game. As we level up, we unlock more and more skills and can gradually customize our build through one of the largest talent trees I’ve ever seen in a mobile game.
From the main city, we can meet and chat with other players, craft potions, team up for co-op dungeons, or jump into the single-player missions to slay hordes of enemies and find new loot with unique stats and set bonuses.
Raziel is a modern mobile game, for better or worse, which means lots of daily and monthly login rewards, achievements, events etc. My biggest gripes with the game, however, are that finding a team at lower levels is almost impossible and that while combat is fun, everything is too easy in the beginning.
Monetization happens through a $4.99 battle pass, a premium currency used primarily for cosmetics, and various “packs” of crafting materials and potions that go up to $19.99. There is no need to spend money on the game to enjoy it though, and while paying players definitely have an advantage in PvP, the game is primarily PvE-focused.

Shadow Fight Arena [Game Size: 1.2 GB] (free)

Genre: Fightign / Action / PvP / High-quality - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Shadow Fight Arena is a visually impressive PvP-focused melee fighting game where we collect a team of three heroes and battle it out in real-time 1v1 multiplayer matches with one hero at a time.
At the beginning of every match, both we and our opponent select which hero to start with. If our hero dies, we get to switch it out with one of the two remaining heroes. We keep going like this until we run out of heroes or have defeated the opponent’s heroes.
Each of the 16 total heroes have unique weapons, abilities, and stats that increase over time as they’re leveled up. Sometimes, we even get to select between two different upgrades, allowing us to customize each hero. Using a hero with stats and abilities that optimally counters the opponent’s hero is key to winning, and it makes combat fun and engaging.
After every match, we progress in the Arena ladder and Battle Pass progression system, both of which provide gold and hero cards used to unlock new heroes and upgrade existing ones.
The touch controls that include a left-side joystick and multiple attack and ability buttons on the right side are well-calibrated, and the punches and weapon attacks feel heavy and powerful. And with ranked, unranked, friendly matches, and AI game modes, there is plenty to dive into.
Shadow Fight Arena monetizes through a $13.49 monthly Battle Pass and hero loot boxes that allow paying players to progress faster than free players. It is all around one of the most impressive fighting games on mobile, but just be aware that while everything can be grinded, the monetization might make it difficult to progress fast without buying the Battle Pass.

3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 158)

Happy Friday, my fellow Android gamer - and welcome back to this weekly rundown of the best games I have played this week :)
This episode includes a brilliant new roguelike action RPG, an amazing sci-fi multiplayer RPG with a huge focus on community and player-to-player trading, and the best high-quality sandbox mech shooter I’ve ever played on mobile!
Disagree with my opinion? Let’s have a friendly discussion below.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

Let's get to the games:

DarkZone [Game Size: 439 MB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Online / Indie / Semi-idle - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Portrait
Required Attention: Some
tl;dr review:
Darkzone is story-driven sci-fi themed multiplayer RPG with crafting, guilds, real-time and idle co-op combat, player-to-player trading, an insane amount of awesome loot, and a great community.
Before entering combat in Darkzone, we must select another player’s hero to take with us into battle. The fight itself is semi-idle, which means the two heroes attack automatically, while we can tap on monsters’ weak points to deal more damage and pick up orbs that fill up a special ability bar. Combat is fast-paced, and there are even real-time co-op boss battles too. Additionally, we gain idle progression rewards when other players use our character to help them out in their own single-player fights.
Loot equipped as gear slowly breaks down when used, so we must repair or salvage it for crafting materials used to create modification implants that can be added to new gear. Combined with the Attributes and Skill systems, this provides a deep level of character customization. Alternatively, resources can be bought and sold on a real-time player-to-player marketplace – something that is very rare to see in a mobile game.
Darkzone monetizes through iAPs that focus almost exclusively on skins and cosmetics, which means the monetization is close to perfect. Combined with the game’s heavy emphasis on social interaction and play, Darkzone is one of the most interesting online RPGs I have ever played, and is a must-try for any sci-fi RPG fan.

Otherworld Legends [Game Size: 273 MB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Roguelike / Dungeon-crawler / Indie - Offline Playable
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Otherworld Legends is a fun roguelike action RPG by Soul Knight developer ChillyRoom, featuring a high-quality pixel art-style, great controls, and an awesome melee fighting combat system with lots of different skills and unique stats for each character.
Fighting our way through procedurally generated dungeon rooms full of monsters and bosses feels great, and the many unique weapons and items that can be bought at randomly occurring shops to provide new abilities or stat boosts that last until we die, provide a constant feeling of progression. The dungeons are also very diverse in their design, and there is even a secret bonus room to find on each floor if we look hard enough.
Like any roguelike, all equipment is lost when we die, forcing us to start over from the first dungeon floor. Permanent progression is achieved between deaths by crafting stat-increasing beverages from items gathered through combat, unlocking new abilities, or by buying new heroes.
Otherworld Legends monetizes through incentivized ads and iAPs for weapon enhancers, resurrection cards, and to unlock new characters – none of which are necessary to enjoy the game.
With its multiple control options, great art-style, and fun fighting-based combat, Otherworld Legends is a must-play for any action roguelike RPG fan.

Astracraft [Total Game Size: 1.3 GB] (free)

Genre: Mech / Sandbox / Shooter / Racer / Arena - Online
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Astracraft is a fun real-time multiplayer arena sandbox mech game that lets us build wacky and over-the-top mechs by combining weapons, shields, wheels, and more before fighting it out in multiple PvP, racing, or casual game modes.
We have complete freedom to combine the many mech parts in whichever way we want, which allows for almost infinite hilarious combinations. Getting creative with our designs is encouraged by the many relaxing and co-op game modes, such as soccer or basketball, that make Astracraft less of a hardcore PvP shooter, and more of a sandbox action game.
The high-quality 3D graphics and animations look great, and the customizable controls are well-calibrated.
The game monetizes through a $20 battle pass that lasts a 3-month season, cosmetic weapon skins that have no effect on gameplay, and a few unlockable weapons that are bought using in-game gold, which we acquire through gameplay or iAPs. In my experience, the monetization does not ruin the fun for free players since most mech parts are available from the beginning, and the few unlockable weapon parts can be acquired for free.
Astracraft is the most unique and fun casual mech game I’ve played on mobile, and it’s definitely worth checking out for its many non-competitive game modes.

Best and worst games I played in 2020

Here are my recommendations of games that I played for the first time in 2020. S-tier games that have become my all-time favourites made this list. 2020 was the year where I finally realised which games I actively want to play and it’s made my gaming experiences so much more entertaining.
Here are also some games to completely avoid with exaggerated opinions. These are some of the worst games I’ve ever played, ranging anywhere from confusingly irredeemable to malignant, insulting games that are only holding back video games as an entertainment and art form, and hate you for playing them.
I’ve listed some better games at the end of each review as much better alternatives with similar gameplay or style. Please vehemently disagree with me in the comments
Best: Resident Evil 2 Resident Evil 2 has everything I want from an action game. The core gameplay of running around a police department, escaping fights with monsters and zombies while working out puzzles is Resident Evil’s thing, and Resident Evil 2 adds solid gunplay, meaningful weapon upgrades and rewarding items for putting in extra effort. I only missed one which required some backtracking near the end of the game, and realised that about 5 minutes after a point of no return. The Tyrant chasing you around adds a lot of flavour to the game, forcing you to adapt strategies and plans. Resident Evil 2 also has my personal distinction of being the only game I’ve ever finished twice back to back, finishing Leon and then Claire’s story in a week.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Take everything I said about Resident Evil 2, plus frightening horror that actually got to me at points, a better story, and a first person perspective that works incredibly well, and that’s what I have to say about Resident Evil 7. Absolutely the best in the series as it amplifies what makes the Resident Evil games so great while adding equally interesting new ideas. The Baker family’s grotesque transformations and gory boss fights are highlights, chainsawing an old man’s face and shotgunning a crazy old woman is the most fun I’ve had this year.
Bloodborne It’s between Bloodborne or Bioshock as my favourite game of all time. I fear that I could spend hours typing what fascinated me about this game, so I’ll save my collected thoughts for another post. Bloodborne’s world is captivating from beginning to end. It unravels as you gather insight on the desecrated city of Yharnam, learning about the Healing Church forsaking the city with its endless hunts. My character, a woman who has left her land after her family were slaughtered by the same beasthood that ravaged Yharnam, fit perfectly with the story, and even thematically mirrored a DLC character’s past. By the way, The Old Hunters DLC is the best DLC ever, no doubt. If you’re going to buy Bloodborne go with Game of the Year edition, it’s spectacular. Of course you don’t need the DLC to fully enjoy the game, but it adds an impressive amount of gameplay hours, new story that adds to the main story, the excellent Research Hall level, the most dramatic boss fight and a pizza cutter weapon. Bloodborne’s gameplay is equally as fascinating as the story, with a fast-paced almost fighting game style combat system, a nearly completely connected immersive world, expert level design, some of the best bosses in any video game, and terrifying difficulty. For many players, these may seem too much or ‘not for me’, (always disappointing to see people give up on the Souls games, but understandable given the lack of beginner friendliness), and I certainly felt the same way at first. When I learnt to persevere and actively focus on the game, quitting out whenever a mild inconvenience in real life happened, it became a joy to play. I had mastered and overcome a godly challenge. I’m pretty terrible at games generally, so I honestly feel proud that I managed to beat this game and the DLC. Bloodborne’s cathartic moments, its incredible story and the pure art of the game which can be captured in a screenshot, or the masterful soundtrack, are all why it’s likely my favourite game ever.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Overlooked is an understatement. Made by the director of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, this game is metroidvania almost perfected. Almost, as there’s some inconsistent game design towards the end with a specific puzzle, but that’s my only real criticism. It’s also a well deserved ‘fuck you’ to Konami, with a pachinko boss fight and David Hayter practically voicing Snake. Gameplay is excellent with intuitive dungeons, bonus areas, RPG-style weapon, skills and armour customisation, and some crushingly difficult bosses. If you want a rest from the main game, you can always return to the beginning town and complete quests - my favourite is making meals for a constantly hungry old woman, as you can later buy and use them for permanent stat boosts. Shamefully, I really liked dressing up Miriam, the main character anime girl. Messing around with her skin colour and unlocking hairstyles is worth the £20 alone. With free upcoming DLC, it’s a perfect patient gamer game.
Spec Ops: The Line Spec Ops: The Line is a perfect game. Many criticise the cover shooting, but it twists the generic mechanics into something amazing. In games such as Gears of War or Uncharted, taking cover is used to stop enemies shooting at you, reload, regen health, have a cup of tea or anything you can do while crouching. Spec Ops, however, puts you against relentless enemies who will suppress your fire when in cover and move to flank you, meaning you are forced to move and take damage, or work out a strategy with your teammates on the fly. It’s not deep strategy, but it really adds a new dimension to the game which sets it apart. The level design is excellent too, with plenty of memorable combat arenas like a decaying stadium, a destroyed luxury hotel, and an abandoned mall, which all go hand in hand with the story, which needs no introduction. Dubai has been wiped out by a sandstorm, and a rogue US army battalion led by your former leader and some civilians remain. Each level adds another piece to the PTSD puzzle, as you mow down hundreds of American soldiers who scream out in fear and panic as the game slow-motions their heads being destroyed by one of your bullets, while death rattles of wounded soldiers permeate the arena. Walker, voiced expertly by Nolan North, slowly changes over the course of the game as his honest, heroic decisions turn out to be, well, not very heroic. One of my favourite details in a video game is how his reload and command voice lines change the further you go into the game, as the weight of his task to rescue civilians and extract his mentor becomes unbearable. Even the main menu changes throughout the game, representing the entropy of the city. I haven’t tried the multiplayer as there’s no one online, but the fact it’s there makes me appreciate this game even more. Spec Ops: The Line is video games as a narrative experience exemplified perfectly.
Rayman Legends Incredible 2D platformer that removes many conventions (lives, starting a level over, time) and is better for it. Each level has depth with collectables that unlock new characters and levels, and side challenges. The highlight is the music stages, which remix songs to fit the world’s theme, and the platforming is based on rhythm. Disappointing to hear of Michel Ancel’s departure from Ubisoft, as that means we’ll likely never get a sequel. I sympathise with you, Beyond Good and Evil fans. Now if only Ubisoft executives could stop trying to mount every female in the workplace and work on another of these games (Seriously though, fuck Ubisoft for the sexual assaults and their PR coverups).
Mario Kart Wii I never owned a Wii as a child. It pained me to see all my friends play Wii Sports Resort and Super Mario, but one game in particular eluded me: Mario Kart Wii. The speed, the soundtrack, the plastic wheel you put over the Wiimote - I remember being captivated by it and wishing I could have a gaming experience like that in my own home. 12 years later, the Wii and Wii U have as much grasp on popular culture relevancy as Game of Thrones, which is the perfect time to buy an old console and a copy of this game. Mario Kart Wii is exactly as I remember. Coconut Mall, DK’s Snowboard Cross, battle mode, plus all the tracks my friends never unlocked make this one of my personal favourites. I debated putting it on this list as I’d find it hard to compare to a game like Bloodborne or Bioshock, but any game that creates the same childhood wonder in me is instantly going in my favourites list. Mario Kart Wii is fun racing with enough depth to get good at, and even more exciting playing it with friends. Especially when you’ve got a spiny shell.
Worst: Rise of the Tomb Raider Basically ‘ok’ can only last so long before becoming tedious. Rise of the Tomb Raider does nothing notable with its gameplay. Most egregious is the plot that’s basically stolen beat for beat from Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Mountains, evil super-Russians, and annoying bullet sponge mythical enemies at the end (although they’re better than the bootleg Thanos’ you fight in U2, but basically anything is). Lara Croft is insufferable, she has no personality and grunts and shoots her way through every situation. Definitely the best of the worst list as I finished only this and Detroit but I really shouldn’t have wasted my time. Instead play Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Saints Row Mid-2000s 50 Cent and Soulja Boy era hip hop aesthetics were always cringe. Saints Row goes for that materialistic objectify all women attitude without much irony and actually takes itself seriously. The beginning is every angry teenage white boy’s dream of various women trying to sleep with you, surviving a gang attack and then being recruited to this gang because they noticed you’re such a chad. I’m surprised he didn’t also win a rap battle against Eminem. It’s trying to be Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas with its satire and comedy, but it ends up being cringy rather than funny when you’re listening to the stereotypical camp gay guy shouting down the radio without any smart jokes or wordplay. The game also runs terribly, even on my original Xbox One. I’m really hoping the other games in this series are as good as everyone says, and this is only a false start. Instead play Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare I imagine the pitch for this game was ‘Consumers didn’t like consuming the new Halo’s that they’ve consumed. Anyway, fellow executive, how will we make consumers consume another Call of Duty?’ ‘Let’s make the consumers consume Call of Duty while ripping off Halo down to the weapon and ship designs and promise a sci-fi experience with 2016 relevant celebrities and the usual passionless gameplay, and completely break the multiplayer with pay-to-win weapons. That way we can consume all of the disappointed Halo consumers’ money plus the yearly sycophants’ who’ll buy our games every year anyway. Wanna test our brand loyalty by releasing the worst trailer ever?’ Instead play Halo 4
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 malignant and represents the worst of ‘live service’ microtransaction lootbox fuelled games. Literally a pay to win £50 (70 USD) game with overpowered weapons only in lootboxes that Activision promised not to include, no campaign and another cringy comedy zombies mode. Fuck this game and fuck Activision. I hope the executives’ spoilt and probably racist children are happy with the money they’ve got from gambling addicts. Instead play Doom Eternal
Detroit: Become Human malignant and represents the worst of emotional story-driven artistic pretentious wank games. Horrible storytelling about racism and abuse, no interesting or likeable characters, nonsensical plot twists and unbelievably miserable forced drama. Obvious and rudimentary observations about complex and incredibly serious social issues are constant. It feels exploitative and contrived to see humans try to rape and murder the harmless androids when in the game’s own context it makes no sense. I’m really sick of seeing this stuff in games and films, the obvious contrivances like stabbing a pregnant woman in the Last of Us by accident, ‘Now you must hate her, audience!’ Terrible writing. If you don’t make the choices the game wants you to make you’re railroaded until you play the game ‘properly’, so your choices mean nothing. I chose not to rescue a character who explicitly hated me because I was an android, which locked me out of a good (relative) ending, because your choices affect a good ending/bad ending binary system. Not playing the game the way David Cage wants you to? Bad ending, though the ‘good’ endings are equally poorly written. While I did actually finish the game, it is absolutely NOT representative of how much I enjoyed it compared to the others on this list. I only stuck around to the ending because my friends constantly recommended it, and because of the praise from reviewers desperate to give any high profile game a positive review if it increases their chances of working for a game company. See this year’s Game Awards as perfect example. David Cage has no ideas that aren’t already from much better movies, the talentless misogynist. I’m pretty sure he ripped the narrative straight out of Humans, a 2015-2018 UK TV show from the few scenes I’ve seen from it. At least Kojima makes good games when he steals from movies, and dubiously sexualises women. Instead play Batman and Batman: The Enemy Within (and watch Seven, Memento, Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049)
Aliens: Colonial Marines it’s awful, but I’ll still take this over Black Ops 4 or The Division. Every level has basic and boring corridors with broken AI targets to shoot. I gave up after a broken stealth section. Pretty funny to watch, though. Instead play Doom
Knack memes aside, Knack sucks. Broken combat where every enemy is so vastly more powerful than you, no real combos in a beat ‘em up, strange Lego knockoff character designs. I can’t wait to play Knack 2 after I’ve finished literally every other game in existence Instead play Lego Marvel Super Heroes and Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga
Dragon Ball Final Bout No idea why I played this, I don’t even like Dragon Ball. Anyway, it’s unplayable due to the abysmal controls Instead play Tekken 3
Wii Music Nintendo are pretty cool, but not free from making terrible games. Wii Music has no real gameplay. As soon as you put in the disc, you’ve won the game. Waving the Wiimote around without any rhythm or skill gets you through every song in the limited track list, which lacks any Killing in the Names or Through the Fire and the Flames(s). No fun at all, and especially disappointing from Nintendo. Instead play Tetris Effect: Connected
Tunnel B1 obscure mid-90s game. The colour brown. Best left forgotten. Instead play Star Wars Battlefront II
Tom Clancy’s The Division The Division proves that the gaming industry is often going backwards. It has less gameplay than Gears of War, another third-person cover shooter from 2006, released ten years before the Division. Even basic enemies are bullet sponges, meaning every encounter is hiding behind a chest high wall and waiting to unload 30 more rounds into them. The story is completely tone deaf and idiotic with a huge disconnect from the gameplay. If you’re a highly skilled operative why is one random thug so much more powerful than you? One of the most infuriating, lazy ways of designing combat, the anti-power trip. Life-wasting Ubisoft hollowness. At least I didn’t waste a weekend, as you can see all the game has to offer in about 4 hours. Instead play Spec Ops: The Line

3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 159)

Friday means mobile game recommendations, so as tradition has it, here are my weekly suggestions of the week :)
This episode includes a very unique cyperpunk-themed arcade game, a cute new adventure platformer, and a story-driven MMORPG with a JRPG combat system!
Disagree with my opinion? Let’s have a friendly discussion below.
New to these posts? Check out the first one from 159 weeks ago here.
The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

Let's get to the games:

Dadish 2 [Game Size: 110 MB] (free)

Genre: Platformer / Adventure / Indie / Humoristic - Offline Playable
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Dadish 2 is a humoristic platform adventure game about a radish dad on a mission to save his radish kids who got scattered across the game’s 50 levels after they got lost on their way to a “bring your kids to work” day.
Using the left-side of the screen to walk in either direction and the right-side to jump, we make our way through obstacles, traps, and bosses, to get to our kid at the end of the level, while trying to collect each level’s hidden star.
In many ways, Dadish 2 is the essence of a good indie platformer experience, with fun characters, pleasing pixel-art, controller support, secrets to discover, and challenging level designs.
Dadish 2 monetizes through ads shown between deaths, with a single $2.99 iAP to remove the ads.

Hyperforma [Total Game Size: 429 MB] (free)

Genre: Arcade / Puzzle / Sci-Fi - Offline Playable
Orientation: Portrait
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Hyperforma is a cyberpunk-themed one-of-a-kind arcade puzzle game, both in terms of gameplay, visual style, and its mysterious story that we unravel by playing through the game’s seven chapters.
Our objective is to hack an ancient computer network in cyberspace by attacking its core with our character. The core is surrounded by a 3-dimensional shell of blocks that we must first break. To do so, we rotate the shell of blocks to find weak spots and then tap the screen to launch our character towards the block. Depending on how quickly we solve the level and how many blocks we destroy, we can receive up to three keys used to unlock new levels.
The futuristic sci-fi backgrounds, colorful ambient, and visual effects look stellar, and the music and sound effects create a truly immersive atmosphere.
Although we unlock new skills as we progress, such as the ability to clone ourselves, the core gameplay never changes, which makes it slightly repetitive. Thankfully, the intriguing story and interesting universe helps make up for that.
The free version of Hyperforma monetizes through ads between levels and a $4.99 iAP that unlocks all seven chapters, removes the ads, provides double xp, and lets us change the difficulty. Interestingly, we can also unlock new chapters by acquiring every key from previous levels, with the option to watch ads to receive keys from the levels we haven’t already gained three keys in.

Magatsu Wahrheit [Game Size: 3.8 GB] (free)

Genre: JRPG / MMO / 3D / Gacha / Semi-open World - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Some
tl;dr review: (The game may unfortunately soon close!)
Magatsu Wahrheit is a high-quality JRPG with MMO gameplay elements, a 3D semi-open world, and an interesting combination of gameplay mechanics for fans of story-based single- and multiplayer RPGs.
From within the game’s main city, we can freely visit various NPCs to buy or upgrade our equipment, or launch directly into quests and missions, either alone or with a party of other players. The world is fully 3D, but once we enter combat, we’re loaded into a combat scene where we can’t move our character and simply trigger abilities to attack the enemies or buff and heal our party. The slow-paced combat can at times feel somewhat dull, but the many events, the interesting world exploration, and the deep character customization through gear and a skill-tree help make up for that.
Although the English translation isn’t perfect, the game’s lengthy and in-depth story has an almost visual-novel feel to it. It’s an interesting and well-written story, but if you don’t care for it, the long cut-scenes might end up frustrating you.
Magatsu Wahrheit monetizes through a premium currency gacha mechanic for equipment and weapons. Although the game is decently generous with providing free premium currency, more can be bought through iAPs. Magatsu is a somewhat grindy game, but there’s no strict need to spend money on the iAPs to enjoy the game.

3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 154)

Welcome back to this weekly tradition of documenting my week of mobile gaming :) These are the most interesting games I played this week.
This week, including one of the best physics-based puzzle games I’ve played this year, an open-world Maple Story inspired 2D MMORPG unlike anything I’ve ever played before, and a follow-up to one of mobile gaming’s earliest huge successes.
Disagree with my opinion? Let’s have a friendly discussion below.
New to these posts? Check out the first one from 154 weeks ago here.
The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

Let's get to the games:

Legends of Idleon [Game Size: 119 MB] (free)

Genre: MMORPG / 2D / Idle / Indie / Side-scrolling - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Little (mostly idle)
tl;dr review:
Legends of Idleon is a unique open-world indie idle MMORPG with resource collection, crafting, loot, humorous NPCs, and a level-design and combat system that draws inspiration from Maple Story’s platform-based 2D world.
Arguably the game’s most unique feature is that we can control up to six characters at once, fully customizing each with unique stats and classes. This means we can turn one character into the best possible miner, while another specializes in woodcutting or Mage combat.
While we manually play one character at a time, the others continue working on the latest task we set them out to do, which is where the idle part of the gameplay comes in. Bank slots are shared across characters, but inventory slots are somewhat limited, so it's important to micromanage each character and store or sell the loot it continuously acquires. Ironically, despite the idle aspects, playing Legends of Idleon provides a much more engaging experience than all the modern “auto-gameplay” MMORPGs that populate the mobile market.
Legends of Idleon’s many gameplay systems provide a lot of depth but may also take some time to learn. Likewise, quests only give the bare minimum information required to complete them, forcing us to manually explore the world and learn by doing – something that is rarely seen in mobile MMORPGs.
The game monetizes through relatively inexpensive $1.99 to $19.99 iAPs that allow us to progress faster, acquire extra inventory and bank slots, and buy cosmetics that have bonus stats. Since there is no PvP content, however, free players are never impacted by paying players.

Early Worm [Game Size: 157 MB] (free)

Genre: Puzzle / Platformer / Physics-based / Indie - Offline Playable
Orientation: Portrait
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Early Worm is a fun and colorful physics-based platform puzzler by Power Hover indie developer Oddrok.
Playing as a worm, our goal is to get to an apple at the end of each one-screen level by swiping and releasing to flick our worm character in any direction. Depending on how few moves we use, we can achieve between 1 and 3 stars in each level.
The 80 well-designed levels introduce a great variety of platforming and puzzle-solving elements like glue, moving objects, rotating rooms, and more, that make each level feel like a unique experience. Combined with pleasant animations, a polished art-style, and simplistic UI, it creates a fantastic indie puzzler.
Early Worm monetizes by showing ads between some levels, which can be removed through a single $1.99 iAP.

Fruit Ninja 2 [Total Game Size: 448 MB] (free)

Genre: Arcade / Action - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Fruit Ninja 2 reimagines one of mobile gaming’s earliest massive action arcade successes, Fruit Ninja, by introducing multiple new game modes, quests, events, and even real-time multiplayer.
The core gameplay remains the same across all game-modes and hasn’t deviated from the predecessor; slice as many fruits that fly onto the screen as possible without hitting the bombs. New to Fruit Ninja 2, however, is the entire progression system that allows us to unlock blades with different stats, and power-ups that we trigger during combat.
The game looks better than ever, and everything from the sound effects to the UI and art-style is highly polished. The real-time multiplayer league system lets us play versus friends or random opponents to improve our ranking and receive rewards at the end of every season. PvP is especially hectic and challenging because we see both our and the opponent’s fruit at the same time, but must only hit our own.
Fruit Ninja 2 monetizes through a $14.99 3-month battle pass, a few incentivized ads, and iAPs for an xp doubler, new powerups, and a few other items. The monetization does not impact the single-player experience, but paying players have a pay-to-progress-faster advantage in the PvP league system.
It’s clear that Fruit Ninja 2 has adopted both modern gameplay, progression, and monetization systems, but its single-player and friends-PvP still provide a fun blast to the past.

3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 153)

Happy first Friday of December! :) And welcome back to my roundup of the most interesting mobile games I played this week.
This week, I played a new multiplayer arena shooter, a unique action dungeon-crawler RPG, and a polished hero collector RPG with an interesting real-time combat system.
Disagree with my opinion? Let’s have a friendly discussion below.
New to these posts? Check out the first one from 153 weeks ago here.
The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

Let's get to the games:

Hellfire - Multiplayer Arena [Game Size: 317 MB] (free)

Genre: Shooter / PvP / Arena / Action / Dark / Indie - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Hellfire is a multiplayer arena first-person shooter that draws inspiration from old PC titles such as Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament to create a dark, gritty, and high-intensity 2-8 player shooter experience with no pay-to-win.
The indie game features 4 deathmatch maps that unlock as we level up. All players start each match with the same weapon, while better weapons, HP recovery orbs, and Shield recharges are scattered around the small map. The first player to reach the kill goal wins.
The simple controls feature a left-side joystick, and two buttons to switch weapons and quickly dash forward. There are both manual and auto-fire options, but I personally think the auto-fire gives the game exactly the fast-paced feel it should have.
The main downsides are that there are too few weapons and too few players, the latter of which means we often end up playing bots. However, since we can create our own private rooms, the game is perfect to play with friends – and this is where Hellfire really shines.
Hellfire monetizes through premium currency iAPs ranging from $1.99 to $29.99 that are used to unlock new vanity cosmetic characters that provide no gameplay advantages.
At this point, the game just needs more players, content, and polish to expand its solid foundation.

Drake n Trap [Game Size: 299 MB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Action / Strategy / Top-down / Dungeon-crawler - Offline + Online
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Drake n Trap is a unique action dungeon crawler RPG where we lead our main character and a team of spawnable fantasy heroes through dungeons full of traps, chests, monsters, and bosses in both PvE and PvP game modes.
Before heading into the 500 dungeon levels, we define a deck of five heroes that each have unique stats, abilities, and a mana cost. During combat, we use a left-side joystick to control our character while spawning multiple of each hero by spending mana that recovers over time. The heroes trace our main character and automatically attack nearby enemies and traps unless we tap a button to make them passive.
The strategy and almost puzzle-like nature of the dungeons force us to constantly switch between aggressive and passive hero behavior to avoid traps and strong boss attacks, which creates a fun and engaging gameplay experience.
In addition to the normal dungeons, the game features both a ranked mode and an arena where we must finish a dungeon faster than six other players who recently played the same dungeon.
Drake n Trap monetizes through incentivized ads and iAPs to unlock and level up heroes faster, acquire high-tier loot, and recover energy. The energy system limits our play-session length, but we get so much energy and premium currency for free through achievements and daily rewards that the game can easily be enjoyed as a free player.

ILLUSION CONNECT [Total Game Size: 3 GB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Gacha / Action / Strategy - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Little
tl;dr review:
ILLUSION CONNECT is a polished team-based gacha strategy RPG with an interesting real-time combat system where heroes are spawned on a 3x3 grid by spending mana that recovers over time.
It features everything you’d expect from a gacha RPG, including a large roster of characters, a guild system, quests, lots of daily login rewards, and a shop full of iAPs. Although the character designs are overly sexualized, the cartoony visuals are high quality, and the universe and events are decently interesting.
Unlike most games in the genre, PvP against friends is real-time in ILLUSION CONNECT. Unfortunately, we can only spawn each hero once per battle, so as soon as they’re all spawned, we have to wait while the combat unfolds automatically. It feels like a missed opportunity that the combat system doesn’t allow heroes to be continuously spawned to create a more engaging gameplay experience.
The game monetizes through an energy system and lots of iAPs for premium currency and other pay-to-win advantages. We do receive a large quantity of premium currency through quests and achievements, so the singleplayer can be enjoyed as a free player – just don’t expect to compete in PvP.
While there’s lots of content to dive into and a story full of mystery, I’d only recommend hardcore gacha RPG fans to check out ILLUSION CONNECT.

3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 149)

Welcome back, my fellow Android gamers! After the warm "welcome back" last week, I'm thrilled to follow-up on schedule and on-time this week, hehe.
This week, I played a very unique indie puzzle game where we have to undo jigsaw-like puzzles, an early access version of the brand new Crash Bandicoot runner by King, and a fun fantasy-themed simulation idle game where we manage an RPG-like shop!
Disagree with my opinion? Let’s have a friendly discussion below.
New to these posts? Check out the first one from 149 weeks ago here.
The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

Let's get to the games:

UnpuzzleR [Game Size: 43 MB] (free)

Genre: Puzzle / Casual / Indie / Jiggsaw - Offline Playable
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Some
tl;dr review:
UnpuzzleR is a unique casual puzzle game where our objective is to undo a jigsaw-like puzzle one piece at a time. Each puzzle piece has an arrow indicating the direction it will attempt to move once clicked, and if nothing is blocking the piece, it flies away and is removed from the puzzle.
The difficulty is nicely balanced, and since we can skip levels, there’s no way to truly get stuck in any of the game’s 250 levels. There are also no annoying tutorials or introductions to the 15 different puzzle piece types. Instead, we get to simply learn as we play, which is rare for a mobile game.
The minimalistic art-style features a dark-mode for playing in dimly lit rooms, and with no time-limits or scores, the gameplay experience is stress-free and very casual, while still providing a challenging experience in later levels.
Monetization happens through forced ads between levels and incentivized ads for additional hints or to skip levels. These ads can be removed through a one-time $1.99 iAP on iOS and $4.99 iAP on Android that also unlocks all 250 levels and allows us to make unlimited mistakes per level.
UnpuzzleR is a must-play game that you’re almost guaranteed to love if you enjoy relaxing puzzle games.

Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! [Game Size: 950 MB] (free)

Genre: Runner / Level-based / Action - Offline Playable
Orientation: Portrait
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review: [Early Access - Full Release later in Nov. 2020)
Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! is a level-based runner set in the Crash Bandicoot universe that, to my big surprise, is being developed and published by Candy Crush-dev King. The game is still in early access, with a full launch across Android and iOS planned for Spring 2021.
True to the original Crash Bandicoot game, the art-style is colorful and vibrant, with most scenery even drawing heavy inspiration from the original game. Also like in the original, we must blow up TNT boxes, collect apples, and spin to tackle enemies. Unlike most other runners, we even have checkpoints from which we restart when we die – a welcomed addition since the game is surprisingly challenging.
As we play, we collect resources used to craft potions that are required to play and progress in the campaign levels. If we run out of resources, we must play special resource levels to gather more, or participate in the asynchronous multiplayer runs. After completing enough levels and ultimately defeating the boss, we progress to the next campaign area and repeat the process.
I have to also give some credit to the level-design, which, with its secret areas and roads that split into two, create a more interesting gameplay experience than that found in most runners.
Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! is not currently monetized in any way, which makes it a great experience for those who can access it. It is ultimately just a runner, but it’s a very polished runner, and one that may give old-school Crash Bandicoot fans a true nostalgia trip.

Shop Titans [Total Game Size: 671 MB] (free)

Genre: Simulation / Idle / RPG-themed - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Portrait
Required Attention: Little (semi-idle)
tl;dr review:
Shop Titans is a fantasy RPG-themed idle simulation game about designing, personalizing, and managing a shop that crafts and sells all the weapons and equipment fantasy heroes need.
Adventurers flock to our shop asking for specific items, which we then craft and sell to earn gold used to upgrade our shop or invest in workers that automatically collect the resources needed to craft items. The rarer the item, the longer it takes to craft, which is where the idle part comes in. We can also equip crafted loot on our own heroes before sending them out on idle quests to gather unique resources used to craft more powerful equipment.
We can haggle and negotiate with customers, join a guild, customize the looks of our shop, and even buy and sell resources and items to and from other players on the marketplace – all of which ensures that there’s plenty to do despite the idle gameplay.
Progression is relatively slow if we don’t pay to progress faster, however, and there’s even a monthly $10 subscription in addition to the expensive iAPs for premium currency. This will ruin the otherwise fun gameplay experience for some players. With that said, the game can still be enjoyed as a casual idle experience and is worth checking out for fans of idle RPGs.

Hey,
After recently investing in a PC, some modding software and PPSSPP I am currently working on a Multiplayer KH project! KH DISSIDIA!
Fans have asked for years about a multiplayer game, and since Dissidia012 started off as a Kingdom Hearts game, what better place to start!
Ever since KH2 and the initial Birth by Sleep trailer, where everyone was freaking out about Keyblade Armour and "the Keyblade Wars" , a Multiplayer Kingdom hearts game has been in my mind. Fighting and playing as characters from KH, the Organisation, Xemnas, Xehanort, would be an amazing concept. Since being able to actually get back into my technological side i decided to start this Project!

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered - Review Thread

OpenCritic - 65 average - 18% recommended - 18 reviews

Critic Reviews

Attack of the Fanboy - Brandon Adams - 3 / 5 stars
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition could have been a success had it simply nailed the multiplayer, but cumbersome limitations make it difficult to enjoy with friends. Overall the Remastered Edition is a prettier, yet lesser experience all these years later, so unless you're itching for that sweet hit of nostalgia and don't mind playing with strangers, it's perhaps best to sit this journey out.
Destructoid - CJ Andriessen - Unscored
While there are a few aspects here that are dated (Miasma streams, anyone?), there is a lot to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition that is timeless.
GameSkinny - Joshua Broadwell - 6 / 10 stars
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered recreates the original's flaws, and like before, it's best enjoyed as a multiplayer-only game.
Gamer Guides - Ben Chard - 3 / 5 stars
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is still as fun as it ever was, but the new additions fail to make an impact and in some places, lessen the experience.
Gamers Heroes - Johnny Hurricane - 65 / 100
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered can only be recommended to the most die-hard of Final Fantasy fans, and only if they play in its single player mode. Those looking to play multiplayer with friends are going to be sorely disappointed.
GamingTrend - David Flynn - 75 / 100
Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is an almost great update on the original. While the game itself is still fantastic and the new content is fun, the online only multiplayer leaves a lot to be desired in terms of quality and features.
Hardcore Gamer - Kirstin Swalley - 4 / 5
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was already a wonderfully unique and challenging title when it originally released, but the Remastered Edition brings that all to the table with even more plus the ability to finally play with friends online.
Hobby Consolas - Álvaro Alonso - Spanish - 70 / 100
Quotation forthcoming.
Metro GameCentral - 5 / 10
The original was hardly viewed as a classic even at the time and while a lot of work has gone into this remaster it can't hide the game's intrinsic shallowness and repetition.
Nintendo Enthusiast - Dominick Ashtear - 6 / 10
As it is right now, with social distancing and self-quarantining being the norm in the United States, I can't recommend this title.
Nintendo Life - Mitch Vogel - 6 / 10
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is the kind of game that will unfortunately only appeal to a relatively limited demographic.
NintendoWorldReport - Jordan Rudek - 6 / 10
While the most dedicated players will find a game containing dozens of hours of grinding and challenge to overcome, most are likely to encounter repetitive and simplistic gameplay with no major story to reward their endeavoring. Many will no doubt find the final main game dungeon to be too great an obstacle to overcome. Without nostalgia to buoy its lackluster gameplay loop and online functionality, Crystal Chronicles is one caravan ride you may want to skip.
Noisy Pixel - Azario Lopez - 7 / 10
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition carries with it many hours of action dungeon crawling and loot collecting. It’s a Final Fantasy game where the story is centered around the player’s actions and how they take on the many trials thrown their way. This is a game created for multiplayer, so the lack of local offerings hurts it a great deal, but the online features are their to group up with friends and create your own adventure.
PSX Brasil - Thiago de Alencar Moura - Portuguese - 70 / 100
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is a fun experience, although its transition to the current generation has been fraught with problems. Its history and combat are simple but pleasant, but the remastering is not the most impressive and multiplayer suffers from a series of confused and unnecessary ideas that limit what can be taken from it.
PowerUp! - James Wood - 8 / 10
It’s just all so captivating and lovely, rising above small annoyances or shortcomings to prove why it has been held up as a classic for so long.
Push Square - Robert Ramsey - 6 / 10
As a mostly solo experience, Crystal Chronicles is a decent, if somewhat repetitive dungeon crawler -- but this remaster should have been so much more.
Reno Gazette-Journal - Jason Hidalgo - 7.5 / 10
As someone who remembers playing the original Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, I’m surprised about how well the game holds up after more than a decade and a half. Admittedly, some aspects of its visuals and mechanics feel dated and schlepping around on bucket duty can be a pain. Overall, however, the game remains fun to play, especially when doing so with other people thanks to its new online features and crossplay. Pick up the free "Lite" edition if you want to try it out first.

September 2020 Noteworthy Releases on Switch

I occasionally see people respond to my weekly Upcoming Releases posts with comments like “it's just a buncha' shovelware”, and I don't think people realize the potential in some of the games they're dismissing. And especially with Nintendo stepping back from their regular Nintendo Directs, I think there's likely to be a fair number of Switch players asking themselves, “so now what?”
Because of this, before we jump into the next month, I'm going through the list of upcoming games for that month that we know about, and highlighting the ones that have a strong chance of being worth paying attention to, as well as a brief snippet about the game explaining why it's worth watching.
I will specifically only be highlighting games that have a reasonably strong pedigree, or that are otherwise particularly noteworthy in some way beyond “this looks good, it could be interesting...”. This means that I'll likely be mentioning a lot of ports, as it's easier to know a game will likely be good if it was already good on another platform (I'm including games that scored 75 or higher on Metacritic on other platforms, 80% positive or higher on Steam, and/or 4 or higher rating on Google Play store). I'll also mention games whose developer has a decent track record for producing quality.
Oh, and before getting into the games, I should note that this is just the list we have available right now – there are likely to be new games announced after this list comes out, as well as games on this list that get delayed. Also, I should note that this is not a list of the only games worth getting on the Switch this month – just the ones that I feel can be backed up with more than just “feels” given what we know now. And of course, since these games aren't released yet, I obviously can't know they're good, they just look promising.
Two things I want to touch on for this month's list in particular. Firstly, this list includes a lot of games with vague “Summer” or “Q3” release dates, since September is the last month that could be considered either of those things. At least as far as anything we know, these games are announced to be coming out before the end of September, though of course these could also be targets that we'll find out have moved. Secondly, a lot of the games in this month's list have prior releases without a Metacritic score. I'm actually looking at this as a good exercise to see exactly how indicative Steam and Google Play user reviews are for predicting critical review scores of a Switch port. I suppose we'll see!
Anyway, on to the list!
9/2 – Piffle: A Cat Puzzle Adventure (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – Mobile developer Mighty Games has only one game on Metacritic with enough reviews to have a Metacritic score, but that score (for iOS game Shooty Skies) is a solid 83. However, that's not to say Piffle: A Cat Puzzle Adventure is an unknown entity – the game has been out on mobile devices since 2018, and currently has an average user rating of 4.3 on the Google Play store. This game is a cutesy take on the sort of Puzzle game where you release a multitude of balls (or in this case, cats) at an angle to try to take out blocks above. Clearly, this game is going to be on the more casual side of things, but if you want to get an idea what to expect, you can try it out on your smartphone now.
9/3 – Good Pizza, Great Pizza (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – This arcadey restaurant game (compare to Cook! Serve! Delicious!! 2 and the various “Cooking Tycoon” games already on Nintendo Switch) was released on iOS in 2014 and PC in 2018, and while neither version has enough reviews to have a Metacritic score, the PC version currently has an 87% approval rating on Steam with 230 reviews. This game distinguishes itself from other games in the genre with its clever, funny writing and bizarre customers.
Announced on 9/3 - 9/3 – Spellbreak (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 74) – I didn't list this in my predictions but it did not have a release listed prior to its release. This is a free-to-play online battle royale third-person shooter that reviewers said was a nice magical twist on the genre. Note: This had a Metacritic score over 75, but then it dropped.
9/4 – Dirt Trackin 2 (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – This game was released some while ago on mobile devices (I'm having trouble seeing when, exactly), and while the graphics on this racing game are nothing special, it currently has an impressive 4.7 average userscore on Google Play, with over 1800 reviews. That's not the only thing noteworthy about this game, either – it looks like this game will support races for 20 players online. Given how much the Nintendo Switch needs quality racing games, hopefully this will help to fill that need.
9/4 – Lair of the Clockwork God (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 82) – The PC version of this game released earlier this year, and currently has a score of 84 on Metacritic. This game is a clever hybrid of point-and-click adventure games and platformers, and critics loved its silly, “stupid” sense of humor and unique meshing of gameplay elements.
9/4 – Paradise Killer (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 81) – This is a game I missed in my original predictions, but list here for those looking at this article after the fact. This is an open-world graphic adventure game where you're interviewing various suspects on an island to get to the bottom of a murder mystery.
9/4 – Roommates (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – The PC version of this game released back in 2014, but never got enough reviews to get a Metacritic score. However, players enjoyed it – the game currently has an 80% approval rating on Steam, with 80 reviews. This game appears to be a dating sim/life management sim-style game where players must manage the schedule, chores, and social life of a student in a college dorm.
9/7 – Shaolin vs Wutang (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – This game was released on PC in 2018, and while it doesn't have enough reviews for a Metacritic score, it currently has a 92% approval rating on Steam with over 750 reviews. This game is billed as a “indie casual fighting game”, aiming to appeal to a wider range of players than just fighting game diehards.
9/8 – AVICII Invector (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 81) – When this game released on other platforms in 2019, it got scores ranging from 79-82. This is a music-rhythm game featuring the music of AVICII, with a stylish futuristic presentation. If you want to give it a try, this game has a demo out on the eShop right now.
9/8 – Meganoid (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – Mobile developer Orange Pixel's one game to get rated on Metacritic, Gunslugs 2, got a Metacritic score of 78. Meanwhile, this game released on mobile devices and currently has a Google Play user rating of 4.0 or 4.4 (depending on the version you go for). This is a challenging procedurally-generated action-platformer. Watching video, it kinda' puts me in mind of a fast-paced sci-fi Spelunky, though that's just speculation. Anyway, one of the versions of this game on Android is free with ads, so you can give it a try if you're curious.
9/8 – OkunoKA Madness (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 82) – This game's predecessor, OkunoKA, got a Metacritic score of 80, and hopefully this follow-up will be just as good. This game is a super-fast challenging platformer.
9/8 – RPG Maker MV (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 65) – This game, first released on PC in 2015, has yet to get enough reviews to get a Metacritic score, but players absolutely love it – Steam users give this game a 92% approval rating with over 3500 reviews. As the name indicates, the RPG Maker series is a powerful toolset for creating and sharing your own custom-made RPGs. What's more, the PC version currently costs $80, while the Nintendo Switch version will be selling for $50, making the Switch version the less-expensive alternative, for a change. Even cooler, you don't even need to buy the game to enjoy other players' creations – NIS America plans to release a free player alongside this game allowing anyone with a Nintendo Switch to download and play the RPGs made by other players (sadly, no cross-play with the PC version, though), so RPG fans without a creative bone in their body will have a lot to look forward to as well.
9/10 – Death and Taxes (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – This game released on PC earlier this year, and hasn't gotten enough reviews to get a Metacritic score. However, the reaction of players has been positive – the game currently has a 90% positive rating on Steam, with over 900 user reviews. This is a game that puts you in the role of Death, which is apparently a desk job that has you stamping paperwork and organizing your desktop. I get a vibe from this one that reminds me a lot of Papers, Please, so those who enjoyed that game may want to give this one a look.
9/10/20 – Deleveled (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – Developer Quantum Astrophysicists Guild has a solid track record when it comes to quality, boasting an average Metacritic score of 76. This game is a Puzzle-Platformer that has players controlling two squares above and below a series of platforms that must transfer their velocity to help each other past obstacles.
9/10 – Hotshot Racing (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 76) – This is a game I missed in my original predictions, but list here for those looking at this article after the fact. This is a retro-style racing game that critics praised for its arcade-style racing and multiplayer play.
9/10 – MO:Astray (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 86) – This game, first released on PC in 2019, was overlooked by critics, but it has an impressive 94% approval rating on Steam, with over 2250 user reviews. This is a platformer that has you playing a sticky ball of goo that can fling itself around and stick to walls.
9/10/20 – Othercide (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – This game already released on other platforms earlier this year, and the different versions of the game got an average Metacritic score of 76. This is a Tactics-style Strategy-RPG and critics praised its top-notch tactical gameplay.
9/10 – Tomoyo After -It's a Wonderful Life- CS Edition (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – This visual novel takes place after the events of Clannad, which got a Metacritic score of 83, and while the PC version of this game, released in 2016, does not have enough reviews for a Metacritic score, players are universally thrilled with it – the game has a 94% approval rating with 325 reviews. This game's story follows a pair of young lovers whose desire to spend a nice Summer together keep getting trampled on by unexpected house guests. Interestingly, this game also houses a game-within-a-game Tactics-style Strategy-RPG that players can partake in as well, for those looking for something beyond the standard visual novel gameplay.
9/10 – Wintermoor Tactics Club (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – This combination Tactics-Style RPG and Visual Novel (hey, didn't I just post about one of those?) got a Metacritic score of 81 when it released on PC earlier this year. Critics praised its lighthearted story and accessible gameplay.
9/11 – Firework (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – This game, released on PC in 2018, was overlooked by reviewers, and doesn't have many user reviews on Steam yet, but those who have reviewed it are unanimous in their response – the game has a 100% approval rating on Steam with 24 reviews. Judging from the trailers, this looks like an action-platformer that reminds me a lot of the Mega Man games.
9/17 – Intertial Drift (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 79) – This is a game I missed in my original predictions, but list here for those looking at this article after the fact. This is an arcade racer with a unique two-stick control scheme.
9/17 – Fight Crab (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 72) – This is a game I missed in my original predictions, but list here for those looking at this article after the fact. This is a game that has you fighting as various crabs wielding weapons. Critics praised its unique gameplay and sense of humor. Note: This game previously had a Metacritic score above 75, but that later dropped.
9/17 – Dog Duty (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – Developer Zanardi and Liza has mostly flown under the radar of critics, but their prior game, Battle Bruise, has a 91% approval rating on Steam with nearly 300 reviews. Dog Duty is a bit different, though, and appears to be a sorta' small-scale Real-Time Strategy game, with players commanding three units and positioning them to take out enemies. In any case, it certainly looks interesting.
Announced on 9/17 - 9/17 – Hades (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 92) – I didn't list this in my predictions but it did not have a release listed prior to its release. This game is an action-packed Roguelike that critics praised for its excellent combat and fantastic story.
9/17 – Mini Motor Racing X (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 72) – Critics overlooked this game when it released on multiple platforms in 2019, but Steam users liked it, with a 97% positive rating from over 35 user reviews. This game is also the successor to the iOS game Mini Motor Racing, which got a Metacritic score of 79. This looks to be a lighthearted racer with 4-player split-screen play and two different racing modes: top-down and behind-the-vehicle. Also, the Nintendo Switch version is getting new game modes, too. Given the lack of quality racing games on the Nintendo Switch, hopefully this will give players one more good option.
9/17 – Moero Crystal H (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 74) – This is a game I missed in my original predictions, but list here for those looking at this article after the fact. This is a raunchy dungeon crawler that critics praised for its humor and solid gameplay. Note: This had a Metacritic score over 75, but it has since gone down.
Announced on 9/17 - 9/17 – Ori and the Will of the Wisps (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 93) – I didn't list this in my predictions but it did not have a release listed prior to its release. This previously-Xbox One and PC exclusive sequel to Ori and the Blind Forest is a beautiful Metroidvania with a focus on platforming.
Announced on 9/1/20: 9/17 – Super Punch Patrol (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 75) – Game developer Bertil Hörberg has a stellar track record, having produced the Gunman Clive games and Mechstermination Force, all games that received Metacritic scores of 79 or higher. His new game, Super Punch Patrol, is a Final Fight-style Brawler with a similar cel-shaded "sketchy" art style to Gunman Clive.
Announced on 9/3/20: 9/18 – Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 82) – Now that this is officially announced and dated, this is the easiest call in the world to make. Two of the games in this collection have been called "the best videogame of all-time" more than just about any other games out there, and Super Mario Sunshine is pretty damn good too. Nintendo would have to mess up this release pretty severely for it to not get a high Metacritic score.
Announced on 9/17/20: 9/17 – The Long Dark (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 77) – This is a game I didn't have in my original predictions because it was released right when it was announced, but list here for those looking at this article after the fact. Critics praised this for being a solid, challenging survival game.
Announced on 9/1/20: 9/22 – Rebel Galaxy Outlaw (Trailer)(Metacritic Score: 83) – This game came out on PC in 2019, and Metacritic gives that version of the game a score of 77. Critics praised the game's space combat gameplay as being a spiritual successor to beloved classic Freelancer.
Announced on 9/10/20: 9/23 – Castlestorm II (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – The original Castlestorm got a Metacritic score of 78 when it released on the Nintendo Switch, and there's little reason to expect its sequel will fare any worse. This is a side-scrolling Tower Defense game that incorporates action and puzzle elements as well, with players building their towers and aiming a ballista at the enemy's tower to try to knock it down.
9/23 – Unrailed! (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – This game released on PC in 2019, and while critics overlooked it, the game has a nice 92% approval rating on Steam, with nearly 3600 user reviews. This game has a blocky “voxel”-style look that will undoubtedly draw comparison to Minecraft, as well as gameplay that has you mining for resources, but this game is a bit more focused, with players working together to try and build their train's tracks before it derails.
Announced on 9/3/20: 9/24 – Alluris (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – Released to multiple platforms in 2019, but not getting enough reviews to get a Metacritic score, the Steam version of the game has a 92% "very positive" rating with over 100 reviews. This is a card-based RPG with "choose your own adventure" elements.
9/24 – Dungreed (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – Yet another game critics overlooked but users thoroughly enjoyed, Dungreed's 2018 PC release has a 90% approval rating on Steam with 4575 reviews. This one looks to be a fast-paced action-platformer with RPG and Roguelike elements. Edit: Delayed until 10/27/20
9/24 - Embracelet (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 84) – Developer Machineboy's prior game, Milkmaid of the Milky Way, earned an average Metacritic score of just over 75 between all of its versions, and its follow-up looks to be even more ambitious, with players exploring an island and using a magical bracelet to solve puzzles.
9/24 – Going Under (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 82) – This is a game I missed in my original predictions, but list here for those looking at this article after the fact. This is a Roguelike critics praised for its goofy presentation and fun gameplay.
9/24 – Rivals of Aether – Definitive Edition (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – This platformefighting game was released on PC in 2015 and Xbox One in 2018, yet there still haven't been enough reviews for the game to get a Metacritic score. Users are absolutely ecstatic about the game, though – it has a 94% positive rating on Steam with over 11,600 user reviews. The Nintendo Switch version also promises to include all of the game's add-on content, including cameo characters like Shovel Knight and Ori.
Announced on 9/8/20: 9/24 – RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Complete Edition (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 71) – This classic management sim may be 16 years old now, but it's still beloved by many, and the PC version has a Metacritic score of 81. This release includes the Soaked and Wild expansions, as well as the series' signature Coaster Cam.
9/25 – Trollhunters: Defenders of Arcadia (Trailer) (No Metacritic Score as of 10/10/20) – While a licensed game based on a direct-to-Netflix children's series doesn't seem like a surefire bet when it comes to quality, this one is being developed by Wayforward, who has been extremely consistent in putting out quality game after quality game in recent years, even rising above mediocre licenses with fantastic games like The Mummy Demastered. Hopefully this game will be in keeping with their usual quality.
9/29/20 – Alwa's Legacy (Trailer) (Metacritic Score: 76) – This game got a Metacritic score of 78 when it released on PC earlier this year. Critics seem to be saying that this is a solid kid-friendly Metroidvania.
August/September 2020 - Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition (Trailer) – Well, this didn't come out in August, so that just leaves September. This is a follow-up to Sunless Sea, which released on the Switch earlier this year. However, it is generally agreed that Sunless Skies is much improved over its predecessor, with the 2019 release of the game on PC getting a Metacritic score of 87. This is a game that balances RPG and survival elements with a dark, almost Lovecraftian atmosphere in an alternate-world Victorian England swallowed up under the Earth. Note: Delayed until TBA
September 2020 – Space Crew (Trailer) – This game is the successor to Bomber Crew, which got a Metacritic score of 75. Based on how Bomber Crew played, I'm guessing this one will have you controlling a spaceship by having you direct each member of the crew to control their own individual responsibility within the ship. Note: Delayed until October
Summer 2020 – Pixeljunk Eden 2 (Trailer) – The original Pixeljunk Eden got an average Metacritic score of just over 80, so there's good reason to expect its long-awaited sequel to be top-notch. This is a unique platformer that has you controlling a flea-like creature jumping and swinging on the scenery. Note: Delayed until Fall 2020
Q3 2020 – Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition (Trailer) – Nongunz was originally released on PC in 2017 and got a Metacritic score of 75. This is an Action-Platformer that critics praised for its challenging action. Note: Missed release date
.
Anyway, that's what I could find for September 2020 on the Switch, but no doubt some of you have specific games you've got your eye on this next month. Please feel free to give a shout out to any game you feel deserves attention! :-)
