The next Detroit: The catastrophic collapse of Atlantic City

With the closure of almost half of Atlantic City's casinos, Newark set to vote on gambling and casinos or racinos in almost every state, it seems as if the reasons for the very existence of Atlantic City are in serious jeopardy.
Israel Joffe
Atlantic City, once a major vacation spot during the roaring 20s and 1930s, as seen on HBOs Boardwalk Empire, collapsed when cheap air fare became the norm and people had no reason to head to the many beach town resorts on the East Coast. Within a few decades, the city, known for being an ‘oasis of sin’ during the prohibition era, fell into serious decline and dilapidation.
New Jersey officials felt the only way to bring Atlantic City back from the brink of disaster would be to legalize gambling. Atlantic City’s first casino, Resorts, first opened its doors in 1978. People stood shoulder to shoulder, packed into the hotel as gambling officially made its way to the East Coast. Folks in the East Coast didn't have to make a special trip all the way to Vegas in order to enjoy some craps, slots, roulette and more.
As time wore on, Atlantic City became the premier gambling spots in the country.
While detractors felt that the area still remained poor and dilapidated, officials were quick to point out that the casinos didn't bring the mass gentrification to Atlantic City as much as they hoped but the billions of dollars in revenue and thousands of jobs for the surrounding communities was well worth it.
Atlantic City developed a reputation as more of a short-stay ‘day-cation’ type of place, yet managed to stand firm against the 'adult playground' and 'entertainment capital of the world' Las Vegas.
Through-out the 1980s, Atlantic City would become an integral part of American pop culture as a place for east coast residents to gamble, watch boxing, wrestling, concerts and other sporting events.
However in the late 1980s, a landmark ruling considered Native-American reservations to be sovereign entities not bound by state law. It was the first potential threat to the iron grip Atlantic City and Vegas had on the gambling and entertainment industry.
Huge 'mega casinos' were built on reservations that rivaled Atlantic City and Vegas. In turn, Vegas built even more impressive casinos.
Atlantic City, in an attempt to make the city more appealing to the ‘big whale’ millionaire and billionaire gamblers, and in effort to move away from its ‘seedy’ reputation, built the luxurious Borgata casino in 2003. Harrah’s created a billion dollar extension and other casinos in the area went through serious renovations and re-branded themselves.
It seemed as if the bite that the Native American casinos took out of AC and Vegas’ profits was negligible and that the dominance of those two cities in the world of gambling would remain unchallenged.
Then Macau, formally a colony of Portugal, was handed back to the Chinese in 1999. The gambling industry there had been operated under a government-issued monopoly license by Stanley Ho's Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau. The monopoly was ended in 2002 and several casino owners from Las Vegas attempted to enter the market.
Under the one country, two systems policy, the territory remained virtually unchanged aside from mega casinos popping up everywhere. All the rich ‘whales’ from the far east had no reason anymore to go to the United States to spend their money.
Then came the biggest threat.
As revenue from dog and horse racing tracks around the United States dried up, government officials needed a way to bring back jobs and revitalize the surrounding communities. Slot machines in race tracks started in Iowa in 1994 but took off in 2004 when Pennsylvania introduced ‘Racinos’ in an effort to reduce property taxes for the state and to help depressed areas bounce back.
As of 2013, racinos were legal in ten states: Delaware, Louisiana, Maine, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia with more expected in 2015.
Tracks like Delaware Park and West Virginia's Mountaineer Park, once considered places where local degenerates bet on broken-down nags in claiming races, are now among the wealthiest tracks around, with the best races.
The famous Aqueduct race track in Queens, NY, once facing an uncertain future, now possesses the most profitable casino in the United States.
From June 2012 to June 2013, Aqueduct matched a quarter of Atlantic City's total gaming revenue from its dozen casinos: $729.2 million compared with A.C.'s $2.9 billion. It has taken an estimated 15 percent hit on New Jersey casino revenue and climbing.
And it isn't just Aqueduct that's taking business away from them. Atlantic City's closest major city, Philadelphia, only 35-40 minutes away, and one of the largest cities in America, now has a casino that has contributed heavily to the decline in gamers visiting the area.
New Jersey is the third state in the U.S. to have authorized internet gambling. However, these online casinos are owned and controlled by Atlantic City casinos in an effort to boost profits in the face of fierce competition.
California, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Texas are hoping to join Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey and the U.S. Virgin Islands in offering online gambling to their residents.
With this in mind, it seems the very niche that Atlantic City once offered as a gambling and entertainment hub for east coast residents is heading toward the dustbin of history.
Time will tell if this city will end up like Detroit. However, the fact that they are losing their biggest industry to major competition, much like Detroit did, with depressed housing, casinos bankrupting/closing and businesses fleeing , it all makes Atlantic City’s fate seem eerily similar.

The Time I Got The Pass

A couple years ago, I was playing poker full-time during a gap year in college. I'm from Jersey (grew up like 15 minutes away from Anna, apparently - took the SAT's at her old high school) and was mainly grinding at Parx outside Philly and Borgata in AC when I wasn't playing online (thank god it's legal here, fuck Sheldon Adelson - wishing death on decrepit old Jews like Kissinger who have receded into the shadows long after their damage has been done is usually weak shit, but I'd laugh if Adelson caught one in the dome), but I was pretty active in the Central Jersey home game scene. One of my good friends was a home game dealer at the time and started working at this juicy game consisting solely of ex-convicts who met up twice a week to lose their drug money to each other. He'd gotten the gig through a connection with one of the game runners who he'd been selling stolen iPhone parts at Rutgers for and told me to drop by since they were always looking for new players. He said the game was "shady" and told me to bring as little cash as possible as there'd be a non-zero chance I got robbed but gave me no details beyond that.
I show up to the game for the first time, hosted in the upstairs of run-down chiropractic office off Route 1, and "fish out of water" doesn't quite do it justice. I'm a sandy-haired twink, 135 pounds soaking wet, and I waltz into this place where everyone has done 5+ years (verbalized by at least three of them, my friend told me pretty much everyone had a record, usually narcotics charges with some domestic abuse sprinkled in) wearing salmon shorts and a button-down. Still, everyone was very cordial, happy to see a new player. Among the cast of characters playing was one of the hosts, an ex-DI defensive tackle who wore the same barbecue sauce-stained wife beater to every game while draped in what looked like 20 pounds of diamond jewelry and rolled up each night in a different Audi A6. There was also "Shorty", a wicked nice guy who'd been wheelchair-bound for over 20 years after taking 5 shots from a Tec-9 for saving his little cousin from getting his shit pushed in (whenever he was dealt 9 5 in Hold' em, after the hand he'd go "man, '95. The year my daughter was born and the year I got shot." which I got him to elaborate on that first night). There was Bri, a woman in her late 30's with an awful weave who'd lose exactly $300 every game in quick $50 increments, always seething on her bustout hand, cursing out the dealer and occasionally throwing chips at them (didn't know why they let her back every game since she brought so little to the game, but it was a very Snot Boogie-esque moment, if you're into The Wire). The only other white person there outside of my friend was "Big D," a paunchy woman in her 40's who'd gone to jail for beating her cheating husband with a baseball bat (omg queeeeeeen slayyyyyy).
I started going most Wednesdays since the casinos were usually slow that night and the Omaha game they ran was very fat. I didn't speak much, and I was mostly known for being a "serious player" and for my ability to snarf down a penne vodka tray faster than "Big Anthony" despite having the effete physique of a John Singer Sargent portrait subject. One night, I'm a few Millers deep (people tolerate you draining thousands from their game better if you're not stone sober all the time) and they started bumping some tunes, not super common at home games but the host was in the mood for it. As I'm sitting there stimming with my chips, my ears perk up when I hear the ethereal melody of "Life's a Bitch" fade in. As an autistic backpacker proto-fantanofag whose music taste was birthed out of the annals of 2011 /mu/, all those Illmatic verses are practically etched into my hippocampus.
I start mouthing the conversation between Nas and AZ at the beginning, and Shorty sees me as I say "cause we spendin' these Jacksons, the Washingtons go to wifey, you know how that go" and tells the table "yo, look." AZ's legendary verse begins and I drill it. 'Visualizing the realism of life in actuality / fuck who's the baddest, a person's status depend on salary..." and the rest seamlessly leaks out of my grapefruit. The whole room erupts out of bewilderment that this skinny nerd just nailed such an immaculate verse, and they're saying "keep going, keep going" during the chorus. I do a clean run of Nas' oft-overlooked second verse and the host is out of his seat yelling at this point as Olu Dara's cornet gently glides us to the end of the track. He goes "let's see him do another one" and the game is de facto paused at this point (very rare as it stops the collection of rake) and turns on "The World Is Yours," very fitting as the next track on the album.
We collectively sing the chorus and then I'm solo when the first verse hits - "I sip the Dom P watchin' Gandhi 'til I'm charged, then / Writin' in my book of rhymes, all the words past the margin" powerful enough lines to carry me through the rest of it. When we get to the third verse, Shorty notices me skip a word in "I need a new nigga for this black cloud to follow / ‘Cause while it's over me it's too dark to see tomorrow" (Jesus, who hasn't felt that at some point?) and at the end of the track, gets his hand on my shoulder and gives the proclamation "anybody who can spit Nas like that can say nigga." The game restarts and I'm asked for an encore, so I do "N.Y. State of Mind", a fortunate ordering since it has by far the highest n-word density of the three. I briefly stumble over "45’s and gauges, MAC's in fact / Same niggas will catch you back-to-back, snatchin' your cracks and black," a difficult string of exact rhymes, but they're equally impressed. The light-skinned drink runner grabs me another Miller and they transition to listening to All Eyez On Me, disappointed I don't have the same proficiency in Pac.
Stopped going to the game when I went back to school. Hope they're still drinking and throwing cards around, they were some cool people.
TL; DR: I can say the n-word because the Dionysian transcends all cultural boundaries.

What to consider earlier than playing on line casino poker

those don't have any concept what they are approximately to walk into. Down right here to have a great time, they discern 'why not supply poker a try?' in any case, how special can it be from the house sport they have played their whole lives?"
메이저 토토사이트
For most people, our first poker enjoy was nowhere near a casino. Both we learned from friends or own family contributors in domestic games, or we plugged into the online poker craze. Nonetheless, the idea of playing poker in an real brick and mortar (b&m) on line casino, with all of the attendant points of interest and sounds, is very tempting for most. So what do you need to recognize while moving your home or on line abilties to casino play? There are numerous differences among on line and b&m play, but two factors you can without delay want to take into account are tells and casino kind.
1. Tells
The principle issue the general public have when shifting from online to b&m play regards tells. A tell is a physical movement a player plays which can supply combatants a clue to his hand, inclusive of placing a hand to the face while bluffing.
On line, on account that your fighters can not see you, bodily tells are not really problem (there are online tells, however that is past the scope of this newsletter). In reality, one famous poker room has an advertising campaign where they invite those gamers who've a "bad poker face" to sign up for, for the reason that nobody can see your face on-line. Inside the film "rounders," quoted at the start of this newsletter, the villain is undone by using the way wherein he handles an oreo cookie depending on whether or now not he has a huge hand.
In fact, tells are not often this extreme. Maximum of the time when you play in a casino, in particular a "tourist" on line casino (see following), your warring parties are a whole lot more worried with what they're conserving than what you are.
Even when an opponent scrutinizes you, staring you down at the same time as thinking of a call, they are commonly simply considering how lots they like their own hand. Actual inform-spotting calls for long, cautious remark of a player's inclinations; you are now not possibly to give a great deal away on an man or woman hand.
Experts like to present the affect that they can just appearance right into your soul and recognise what you are retaining, however there may be loads extra to it than that. If you're really concerned you could buy a pair of reflective sunglasses to put on so no person can see your eyes. You can additionally usually wait a predetermined quantity of time (5 or ten seconds) earlier than acting whether your hand is powerful or now not so robust and choose a predetermined spot on the desk to stare at even as looking forward to a person to respond for your action.
2. Kinds of online casino
All casinos are not created same. Ten years in the past, before the explosion in poker popularity, maximum casinos did no longer have a poker room at all, or at pleasant, a small phase of the blackjack floor partitioned away in which or 3 $1 to $2 restriction games would possibly take location.
Manifestly, matters are one of a kind now, however there are nonetheless incredibly unique forms of casinos wherein one may play poker. The first is a card membership. Those are maximum normally observed in locations like california, wherein poker as a recreation of talent is legal, but a few other playing games aren't. Even though they have multiplied to different video games, those clubs are on the whole designed to play poker.
As such, you are probably to locate the most skilled poker gamers right here, despite the fact that no longer necessarily the most powerful and they have their share of vacationers as nicely. The more not unusual sort of casino is a las vegas style casino. These casinos have made fortunes on blackjack, slot machines and roulette and did no longer certainly awareness on poker inside the beyond as it is not a big cash maker for the on line casino.
In contrast to the alternative video games, that are towards the residence (the on line casino) and are based in order that the residence usually wins in the long run, poker is a recreation wherein the on line casino handiest makes cash through taking a percentage of every pot (referred to as "the rake," normally no more than $four a pot) for themselves. Despite the fact that now rare, some casinos take "time" rather than a rake, which means every 1/2 hour a representative of the casino comes round and collects a predetermined amount of money from every player in the game.
Of those las vegas style casinos, you may find what i consider as poker casinos vs. Tourist casinos. A poker casino is one that has constantly had poker as a part of its draw. Those consist of the bellagio and the mirage in las vegas and the taj mahal and borgata in atlantic town. A tourist casino is one of the aforementioned casinos that did now not have poker in any respect until the recent increase made it worthwhile as a draw to get gamers into their casino. Of path each of those kinds of casinos cater to travelers, but the poker casinos are where you are much more likely to locate specialists. Which of those types is extra for your taste is for the person to determine.
The maximum important issue to bear in mind is that whether it's online or inside the casino, poker is poker. Play a clever recreation and you have to rake within the chips, whether or not they're digital or product of clay.

A Crash Course on Casino Bonuses

A Crash Course on Casino Bonuses

Casino bonuses are offers being given by online casinos that would enable a player to avail of bonus betting money to wager on the several casino games being offered. The amount may differ for different online casinos.

Online casinos have been flooding the online world lately. It seems that they have been trying very hard in attracting more and more players to try their luck at online casinos. They have been have been trying to think up of different offers to catch a potential playerís attention. One such promotion is offering different types of casino bonuses to get people into playing on their online casinos.
Casino bonuses are offers being given by online casinos that would enable a player to avail of bonus betting money to wager on the several casino games being offered. The amount may differ for different online casinos. Some may give out 25 to 50 dollar bonuses for a minimum bet. There are even some online casinos that can offer a 100 percent match bonus for every deposit that the player makes. This means that if the player deposits $100 o his account, the online casino will match that amount in full, making the player acquire $200 initial betting money on his account. There are also other casinos offering bonuses next to nothing, just to have people have a taste of playing online and possibly have them hooked to play some more later on.
Although you might think that this is easy money on your part, there are certain requirements that you have to follow in order to cash in on your proceeds. Online casinos have established these requirements as a safeguard to possible abusers of their offer. One of the usual requirements is that a player should wager at least 25 times the amount of deposit and bonus before being able to cash in. There are some games like baccarat, craps, roulette and even blackjack that do not count in meeting the required wagering provisions.
Casino bonuses can really attract players into getting started on online betting. They seem to want to avail of the extra amount being offered that would provide them with more betting money. It has made many people turn into regular online players and has done well for the online casinos. But there are also some people who have taken advantage of this offer in order to cash in on casino bonuses. These players, otherwise known as ìbonus huntersî, take full advantage of the offered casino bonuses by opting to cash in on their winnings after all the betting provisions are met. Whether players may like it or not, these actions are strictly prohibited by the online casinos because it has been part of their conditions that players may only play for recreational purposes only. Online casinos are always on the lookout for bonus hunters. When caught, their promotional privileges are usually revoked.
If you do not want to be labeled as a bonus hunter and have your online privileges revoked, there are certain things that you should avoid. First of all, you should refrain from maintaining multiple accounts when playing in an online casino. Also try not to cash out on your winning before fulfilling the casinoís wagering requirement. You should also try to gamble normally. A sudden increase in the amount that you bet may make the casino throw a red flag at you. And last but not the least, make sure that you have the proper credit information given and avoid having irregularities on your credit card. Wrongful information may compel casinos to bar you from playing on their site and deny you the privilege of availing casino bonuses.

Sunday Games

Tampa Bay at Detriot (+3.5/+6): This one is all over the place. I am seeing spreads as low as 3.5 and as high as 6. It's a little curious to me. Yea, DET is starting a backup QB that has struggled a little going 0-2 so far. And yea, DET is 28th in sac rate, last in QB hit rate with a horrible secondary and nothing to play for this season playoff wise. And yes TB has been on fire recently going 3-0 and scoring and average of 30 ppg in their last 3... All of these signs point to backing TB...However, TB has the second-worst pass and scoring defense in football and Blough has shown the ability to get the ball to Galloday. Along with Evans and Winston appearing on the injury report, the Buccaneers could also be down linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul and receiver Scotty Miller. You would think this is going to be a shootout given both teams poor secondary and ability to big play throw to their WR1s. However, there appears to be some RLM on the total with over 75% of bets on the over, but the total dropping from 47.5 to 45.5. Very curious! I know it would hurt the DET draft stock, but I feel this is a prime spot for Blough to get his first NFL start/win. I was going to load up on props this game thinking it would be a shoot out, but the RLM has me worried in that department, so I will probably limit my exposure on this game. There are plenty of better spot this weekend.
Extra Note: TB has gone 6-13-1 ATS in its last 20 games as a road favorite...

Philadelphia at Washington (+5.5/+6): Well, I am kinda mad at PHL for that comeback on Monday night. :P
Speaking of Monday night, Philly is playing on a short week and has injuries to half the team. Alshon is done for the season, Aghalor is Questionable, Howard had to come out of the Monday night game due to cramping. This is a clear low scoring spot so looking at props is questionable. The total has dropped almost 2 points but not though any key numbers yet from 40.5 down to 38.5. The next big number is 37. Honestly this is a crapshoot of a game. Philly is still playing for a playoff spot but they just have such a limited offence to work with. With the limited receiving core (essentially the two TEs) the algo favors the under on the PHL team total of 23.5. Also, it's hard not to look at the home dog catching almost a TD in a game with such a low total...

Chicago at Green Bay (-4/-5): Here is a game that could have some serious playoff implications. Chicago is trying to win out just to have a hope that the right teams win and lose for them to make it in. GB is now playing for playoff seating. On a neutral field, I would definitely be favoring the Bears here. However, GB at home is a totally different team. They are 2nd in ypp at home vs. 31st on the road take that stat and add it with CHI has only covered one spread OTR this season...makes it a scary look for CHI. However, the GB defense is one of the worst for how good their record is, conversely, the CHI defense is much better than it's record dictates and the CHI offense looks much better chemistry wise than they did in the first half of the season. As you can tell, my model is leaning CHI here and there is RLM to support. Currently the about 55/60% of the bets are on GB, however the line has moved from an open as high as -7 down to as low as currently -4.
Extra Note: Bears: 7-0 SU and ATS when both teams are coming off a home game, and 5-0 SU and ATS in division games with QB Mitchell Tribusky when Chicago owns a winning record … Packers: 1-6 ATS in Last Home Games in division games when coming off a non-division game

New England at Cincinnati (+10): We're on to Cincinnati... A week ago, when we were filming there sideline signals...
In all fairness does anyone think NE would actually NEEED the Bengals signals to beat them... They came out as a 10 point road favorite! I dont get this one and honestly it feels like media bias to have something to talk about for a week and to blame when the Patriots win another Superbowl. There is some cause to be weary of this spread. Edleman is questionable but I just don't see enough to warrant a stay away. Here's an extra stat found for the Patriots: "The Pats are 41-17 ATS off a loss... and have been money in the bank for bettors in this spot for years as well, going 13-2 ATS in their last 15 vs. teams with losing records (which includes going 4-0 ATS this season) and a perfect 3-0 ATS in their last three after having lost two out of their last three SU. The Bengals on the other hand are a money-burning 8-13 ATS in their last 21 at home, including 1-4 already this season."

Houston at Tennessee(-3): This line moved quick! It opened as low as -1 but as soon as HOU fell on their face last week and TEN beat OAK, this spread quickly moved to -3. A justified move imo as since the RT insertion, TEN has been the number one offence in the league. They have also tripled their no huddle rate for a more uptempo offense. They will be facing a HOU D that has, quite frankly, SUCKED since JJ watt got hurt. The model likes a lot of Henry in this one (Not surprising he is the KEY to the TEN offense) combined with a ton of PA Passing for TEN going for big plays. The model favor's TEN but as the spread climbs higher it looks like a weaker play.

Seattle at Carolina(+6): This is one of the harder games for me to cap this week. On the one hand, its a west coast team traveling East for a 1pm game. On the other hand, its the Seahawks doing it and RW has a great track record in these games. Also, it looks like the Carolina defense is giving up... in their last 5 games, teams have scored on more than half of possessions vs CAR. Penny is out, but Carson is back and ready to go against one of the leagues worst defenses vs the run. On the other side we have CMC who is also facing a shotty defense. I do think this is a potential upset spot. Any time I see a home team plus 6, it always red flags a teaser breaker, however with the "destiny run" that Wilson is on this year I would say the chances are lower than a regular spot.

Denver at Kansas City (-10): Another one I am really torn on. KC has beat DEN last 7 times SU and ATS. However, we are still uncertain of the health of PMs hand. He looked great in the first half of the NE game, but then just stopped doing anything in the second half. Overall, he started the season with an 18-1 TD/INT ratio, but since returning from injury has a ratio of 3-2. Also, the DEN pass D is pretty good and has Lock on the other side of the ball playing with high confidence, starting his career 2-0. Don't get me wrong, its totally possible KC wins this game 27-13 or 31-20, something like that...but with the total dropping from an average 47 open to 44.5 now and the spread dropping from 13.5 down to 9.5/10, I think there is still value on Denver. KC will be playing as hard as they can as there is still a chance at the two seed. Still, as I stated, the model is leaning DEN and the points here.

Miami at New York Giants (-3.5): Not much to say here. Both defense are shit. Eli's last home game for NY and most likely his last chance to end with a .500 W/L record. I'm gonna just go with the Manning conspiracy and say that the Manning family had a hand in Parker getting his contract extension, he will sit or play poorly, and Eli will get a great game send off at home. No stats. Fade if you dont like conspiracy theories. XD

Jacksonville at Oakland (-6.5): Another big line movement. Opened at 4.5, is up to mostly 6.5. Last week the Jaguars, (31st) in run D, lost their best linebacker and leading tackler in Myles Jack. This week they lost another linebacker in Quincy Williams who is the fourth linebacker that Jacksonville has lost this season. This Sunday should be a great day for Josh Jacobs who only needs 246 yards to break Saquan's rookie-of-the-year mark of 1,307 yards. Even if Jacobs is hurt, DeAndre Washington, who filled in nicely last week, will get the chance to carve up the Jaguars. I do think that this is a good look for the over. Both defenses suck the only deterrent here is DJ Chark the shark might be out for this one, hurting JAX chances at keeping up.

Cleveland at Arizona (+3): This is another curious spot for me. The Browns are pretty much done for the season in regards to playoff chances. Theoretically they could win out but like the Bears they would need a ton of help, and a win over the Ravens. They do face an ARZ team that is horrible against the pass and has been a money loser for most of the season at home. The algo doesn't have a definite lean here, but as the points rise, the AZ ml looks tempting. This game also has the potential for a big props game as CLE has very good WCB match ups.

Minnesota at Los Angeles Chargers (+1.5): Some Serious RLM in this one. Almost 70% of bets on MIN yet the line has gone from a -3 open to -1/-1.5 in most spots. This is actually really weird. MIN has almost everyone healthy again, Theilin, Diggs...both back. LAC stadium as we know has almost no HFA...w.t.f. Also, this game missed out on the flex to the night game which went to BUF/PIT... Can you say, " The fix is in" All statistics point to MIN picking up an easy win. Then why is the line dropping? Well, lets dive deeper into the stats...
  • Los Angeles is home after a tough stretch of schedule and riding high off a 45-10 win over Jacksonville last Sunday. The Chargers defense has been especially strong, allowing an average of just 260 yards against over the past three outings.
  • The Chargers have been playing exceptional pass defense of late as they have the second-best passing yards against oveer their last three games and have held Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr and Patrick Mahomes to just 561 yards combined and three touchdowns in three of their last five games. The numbers look even better when you look at all their games since November: 171.4 yards passing and only one opposing QB to throw for more than one TD.
  • Cousins is 3-4 SU on the road this year and has a completion percentage 17 points lower on the road than at home.
  • Chargers are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games when getting the points
Maybe the sharps are considering this a let down spot for MIN as they are probably looking ahead to a divisional match up next week vs. GB.
One last piece of information that makes the Chargers one of the BEST SPOTS TO TEASE this week :
  • The Bolts’ eight losses on the season have all been by one score (one by 2, three by 3, and four by 7) and while they’ve gone 4-0-1 ATS in their five wins in 2019, keeping it close wasn’t enough for bettors sorting through a 4-7-2 ATS record on the season

Atlanta at San Francisco (-10.5): The 49ers played a spectacular game last week to get a win over the Saints. This puts them in the hunt to get the top seed in the NFC. However, their injury list is growing at a fast rate at the wrong time.
They’re missing bodies at receiver, on the defensive line, on the offensive line (starting center Weston Richburg on IR) and in the secondary, where Richard Sherman, K’Waun Williams, and safety Jaquiski Tartt are out or questionable heading into Sunday.
Since the bye week, Atlanta is 3-2 SU and ATS after 1-7 start. With all the injuries to SF here, I can easily see a backdoor cover from ATL. Hell, San Fran's final two games of the season are against divisional opponents (SEA and LAR) they might get caught resting and looking here and be in line for a surprise upset! XD

LA Rams at Dallas (+1): How did this game not get flexed into the night spot...? Is it because Philly is going to lose to Washington and this game means nothing for Dallas? I can't imagine if Philly gets a win here that Jerry Jones wouldn't want Americas team to not be in the spotlight when they are playing for a playoff chance...
Anyway, almost 80% of the tickets are on the Rams, and the line has moved heavily from -4 Dallas to -1/1.5 LAR.
If the Rams win out, they can almost control their destiny with a 96% chance of making the playoffs. There defense is better. Vander esch is still out for Dallas but Sean Lee may be good to go in this one. The Rams have been trying to get back to basics with Gurley over the last few weeks, and the Cowboys have been gashed in the run game so look for LA to continue with that strategy. Depending on how well Dak can move the ball against this Rams D, this game has the potential for a high scoring affair. The only thing that really worries me is with 80% of the tickets on LA and the line has yet to get up to -3, it looks as if the books dont want to give Dallas too many points. Maybe Dallas is actually the play here? Honestly, I think the best spot in this one is another teaser. The over looks prime and either side teased above 6/7 looks very attractive.

Buffalo at Pittsburgh (-1): Finally we get to the game that the NFL decided to flex into Sunday Primetime. Currently 70-80% of bets are on Buffalo and the spread has moved from 2.5 down to 1, but that isn't through any key numbers. Both teams have been great defensively and PIT sees the return of their starting RB. This has the makings of a tough, low scoring, grind it out type game. We say this every week it seems, but it's going to be a big test for Josh Allen to see if the Bills are truly a playoff contender or just had an easy schedule. So far he has done well winning 5 of 6 on the road this season with 3 of their 4 highest scoring games OTR. However, they will be facing a Steeler D that has been legit since the add of Fitzpatrick. Over the last 4 games(all wins) the Steelers are giving up only 16 ppg. Again, this game looks good for a tease. Both sides too in a low scoring grind it out game that looks to be decided by 1 score or less.

Pre-First Casino Visit Advice Request

Hey guys,
First time ever posting on poker and although I enjoy playing poker with friends for minimal amounts of money (normally £5 buy in, winner takes the pot about once a month), I've never played in a casino or a higher stakes home game.
I'm heading out to NJ next month with family, and as chance would have it, before travelling down to Cape May, we're staying overnight in Atlantic City.
I had a look online and saw the Borgata has some $30+5 buy in tournaments which I wouldn't mind trying just to see what's what, as well as some $1/2 cash games, but in all honesty I'm a little overwhelmed with the options available and thought I would reach out to some people who are a little more travelled in the poker world.
I'm not too concerned about coming out with a profit, like I say its a holiday and I'll probably be taking $150 or so gambling money anyway, (better to spend it at the poker tables than on a slot machine imo!), but I was wondering what would be the best game to play as a novice trying to learn in a live format?
Apologies if this kind of post isn't allowed!

Phil Ivey loses massive lawsuit

Exactly one year ago, Phil Ivey was threatened by the guys at London's Crockfords casino with a lawsuit, in response to his own action. The poker player who also has a keen eye for baccarat tables, won in excess of €10 million playing this game at the aforesaid casino. Apparently, he used the controversial method that goes by the name of edge-sorting to maximize his chances and when the casino officials found out, they refused to pay his winnings. This was the first time that Phil Ivey got in trouble at baccarat tables, with another scandal starting just a couple of months later and it involves Borgata casino in Atlantic City. That lawsuit is also pending and this doesn't bode well for Ivey who was confident that he would win the first lawsuit in the United Kingdom. Both casinos claim that since the profits were illegally obtained, they were under no obligation to pay them out. Edge-sorting is highly controversial and it implies that the baccarat players take advantage of a faulty design in the playing cards. Phil Ivey realized that he had a rare opportunity of winning a lot of money by exploiting this flaw and he did exactly that. The lawsuit was underway and the United Kingdom High Court reached a verdict last week, claiming that Ivey's edge-sorting is in fact cheating. The judge said that the poker player influenced the croupier and by requesting the cards to be reoriented before loaded into the deck, he cheated. Even though Ivey and his lawyers claim that the casino was willing to please the poker player, the other side testified that at that time, they were not aware of Phil's methods. The casino celebrated his victory as it no longer has to pay a huge amount, but the vast majority of those who monitored the scandal, were disappointed by the verdict. Ivey will file an application to the Court of Appeal, which means that this is not a definitive solution, but the odds are stacked against the poker player. He says that by simply exploiting the failures he offset the proverbial house edge and improved his own chances. It goes without saying that the vast majority of poker and baccarat players were upset with this verdict and even more will probably shift from land-based casinos to online one. At Deuce Club Casino for example, the random number generator and state-of-the-art software handles all the games, rendering the risks of similar scandals virtually nonexistent

My recent breakdown and major degen moment.

So for awhile now, I have been doing OKAY on NJ regulated sites. Roughly break even reg, probably slightly below. I have BRM issues, but sometimes I manage to stick to it. For awhile I played 6max 10nl, became a winning player for 3.5bb/100 over 50k. But usually donk that away in mtts. My heart and sole is in MTTs. Its what I TRUELY enjoy. I am not a horrible mtt player at all, but definitely definitely have leaks I need to work on. I barley ever play live. I live in NJ but 2.5hrs from AC. Ive won satties into the 2milly at borgata, and a few other bigger live events but I usually make it to the end of day one and get too tired and lose concentration towards the end. Never made a day 2 yet.
So recently we have had the GSSS series on party/borg and then direcetly after the njcoop which just ended. I grind satties heavy to win tickets into the bigger events. I did fairly well in the beginning with satties, but lost in the bigger events. Manged to final table a few events and binked a 2k for $850. Nice. However, I also managed to lose the remainder of that during the rest of the series since all these events are above my bankroll. But when would be a better time to take shots than a series with abnormally larger prizepools.
So I was upset I lost my initial $700 deposit I added ontop of my $300 roll for the series. This began my tiltish degening..
Wednesday night I hit the casino, played BJ. Lost, lost, lost. Ended up losing alot. $800 to be exact ontop of the 1k I had lost prior in the series which I should of managed more appropriately from the get-go. Problem was, only $400 of that I had in my acct. I was going to go -$400 and with overdraft fee's, thats another $120! Fuck. The next morning I wake up, pissed off and suddenly remember.. Oh shit and what was that? Also had car insurance taking $110 out that same Friday!! FUCK. Looking at -$630 because of my dumb asshole. I had $200 cash to my name at this point on me. I felt stuck and in deep. I thought even though, I dont play live much.. I could possibly take that $200 and maybe run good in 1/2 live at Sands Casino which is like a 50min drive away. I don't like playing there to begin with, but like I said it was my only real option at that point.
Thursday I head to Sands with a degenerate buddy of mine who mostly plays pit games and slots. He convinces me to play BJ for a little.. 10 min at this point, its early so okay. I end up doing okay I guess and walked away with $80 profit. $280 total. I buy in 1/2 for my $200 with the hopes of if I run low, ill top up with my remaining $80. The table I was at was a complete DRAG. Every other table was full, we had 5 players. Everyone limping, it was disgusting. After 1.5hrs I couldn't take it and went to find my buddy. He was up a couple hundred playing BJ, we decided to hit the bar for a beer. At this point I had just shy of $300. After our break, I go back to poker and get seated at a different table. Much more action, lots of floaters, I liked it. Unfortunately early on I ran AA into AQs which turned and rivered a flush on me. I lost 1/3rd my stack, and shortly after I busted out with I cant even remember what I think maybe AQ Immediately, I knew my plan B. I have never done this before in my life, but never also degened away so much money online in my life either. I hit the credit card and got a cash advance for $300. Hit me with a $28 fee and my card hit me with another $10 fee.
I take that $300 back to the same table. I played for about 5hrs give or take and ran up to roughly $1k! I DID IT! I ran super hot and ran my nut flush into 2nd nut flush and 2 pair on a 3 way all in. Hit a few more big hands, at this point it was getting late, I was up and I decided to cash out.
Immediately on the way home, I deposited $600 cash into my checking acct via ATM and was able to cover my charges without any overdraft fee's! Ahhh I was in the clear! The remaining $400 I was going to immediately pay back on my CC for my cash advance..
However, it doesn't end here. Friday morning Sands happens to have this $100 tourney. I called asked about it, they said it gets about 100 - 120 runners, top ten usually pay. I was interested, I was off of work that Friday and decided to shoot up at 11am and play. Mind you I have only played in live tourneys a handful of times, but I do play online.. a decent amount.
I ended up getting there just in time for late reg. 25k starting chips so it was a deeper stack tourney. I end played for 6.5hrs and when it was down to the final 2 tables I was one of the shorter stacks at roughly 100k. Average stack was 200k. I managed to bust 2 shorter stacks out so I was sitting about average stack now. Maybe 15 renaming. I was playing very tight and just getting blinded out. Down to about 140k with 6000/12000/2000 blinds/ante. I went all in pre 2 times and both times ended up chopping. (I was ahead both times the turn or river chopped it) Card dead for a bit but I really wanted to final table this. 10th paid almost $350, first was $3k.
Now, 12 left.. I look down at A9s in mp with maybe 130, 120k. Everyone to knows my image and have been tight and during showdown I have good holdings. For whatever reason I decide to open for 35k instead of open shoving (which I have usually been doing in LP, CO, BTN but not MP unless really strong holdings) Folds to the BB who is younger, has been playing well but was short for awhile did some risky flips and now had a decent stack. He tanks for a bit then shoves. I cant fold at this point but I think. I feel he could be doing this with a range as low as QJs, KTs, KQs, KQ + and probably any pp. I put his range so low seeing just how hes been playing and it felt like a real aggressive move to pot steal considering I opened instead of shoved. In reality he probably knew I couldn't fold. And I couldn't..
Busted 12 which hurt. Really wanted that final table. Smelt it. But to be honest there was only one shorter stack than me at the other table and maybe 1 other stack my size.
So I take my remaining $300 and donk it off in the pits. Go home and feel depressed I cannot now pay back my CC advance. So what do I do? The correct degen thing and begin overdrafting my acct again playing BJ online to win my $400 back. $100 deposit, $100 deposit, $200, $200, $250.. etc etc. Since its ACH, and it was friday night.. it wouldn't hit my acct until Monday. I figured if I won, and withdrew, It would also clear that monday. Except, I didn't win. I lost. Even more than before. $1500 total.
Negative -$1500 in my acct. I sold a bunch of things, managed to pull some strings and was able to come up with that money by Monday, otherwise I was looking at an insane amount of overdraft fee's. I really fucked up. I have NEVER done anything like this before and usually stay far away from the pit games. Idk what came over me but it made me sick to my stomach. I sometimes wish poker rooms should be separate from casino's themselves. But I can't blame anyone but myself.
So for now, I am taking a break. Id like to pay off my CC, get some savings together and maybe give poker a shot again. I know I am a decent player, just god damn I cant believe I got sucked into the pits the way I did.
Shitpost - TLDR: Went negative playing pit games online, went to the casino, won it all back, went back the next day, lost. Went home lost more online, didn't stop until I was -$1500.

How to Win Free Money Playing Poker in N.J (Evolving thread)

Remember the online poker operators and casinos in N.J are like Robin Hood in a way. Only they take from everyone, but give to us smart poor if we feel like taking advantage of free promotional money. This money is there for anyone to have; you just have to SHOW UP!
Once you realize this truth you must simply sign up for the main online poker sites legal in N.J (Pokerstars, Borgata, 888, and WSOP). These do not REQUIRE deposits, but you will often be better off with a small deposit.
Goals/Thoughts:
1) Help a friend learn how to get started making money from poker with zero risk. Keep it straight forward; stuff anyone could use just getting into poker brand new. Emphasize that anyone can win money even if they haven't played before with freerolls at a minimum; which any pro will confirm is fact. Just keep in mind you will always win more if you put time into improving your poker skill; even if there is no risk for you now.
2) Want to provide useful links and information to opportunities available to anyone who lives in N.J. This can include: - Review of poker clients and why you should sign up to their site - Freeroll tournies offered and schedule (sometimes daily) - Time commitment required. - Link to site to download the client.
Note these are legal and regulated poker operators in the state of N.J. The only catch is you have to be physically located in N.J to play and fight for free money.
3) This is for people who are SERIOUS ABOUT MAKING MONEY; NOT GAMBLING. I am not recommending anyone gamble without a skill-edge unless it is a free tournament that pays out free money!
Update (4/26): Have a lot going on right now, but going to work on continuing to add info here tomorrow. Notably on promotions you can take advantage of on Pokerstars NJ, Borgata NJ, and WSOP NJ. I really only covered 888.
Update (4/27): Still need to complete this. This sort of 'boring task work' for me is sometimes very hard to focus on because of the way I'm neurological wired. However, I'm committed to completing this by Saturday.
Update (5/3): still need to get on this! I was on a business/pleasure trip over the weekend that was completely spontaneous. So being out of N.J and unable to play I needed to push this back a week.

Borgata Poker Open - $2 million guarantee event

Hey /poker,
Does anyone have experience in the $2 million guarantee event? What's the field like?
I'm thinking of taking a flyer on this event. I have few illusions that I would do super well or even money, as I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to MTTs...I've played something like three live tournaments ever, although I chopped one of them for a few hundred. One of the main reasons I'm interested is because I'd like to get more experience at big events and MTTs, but I have no idea if this is even a sensible place to start.
Also, $500 feels like a large investment to me compared to my usual buy-ins online (10NL, sometimes 25NL) and live ($1/$2). So the opportunity cost seems kinda high as well.
Thoughts?

Questions Answers
How do you find out about these games? (Friend of a friend of a friend?) Are they mostly hosted in Manhattan or within the other boroughs and NJ as well? I've been around the games for awhile, and through the loop I've discovered more games. I started out when Manhattan would have places with 14 cash games pumping before the big shooting then they really cracked down on it.
Any casino tournament players in this? Casino players love them because it's a lot more action and talent pool is very slim. Yes there are tournaments aswell, all sorts
What's your style? New age aggressive online type or old school mathematical? I work in Information Security and part of my work is social engineering gigs where I even worked with Law Enforcement to understand body language. Have you used something like that to your advantage? Most n00bs try to look for microexpressions when it's usually the feet and torso that are sure tells. So for huge winnings, how do you stash it away? Deposits of less than $10k in different accounts? What's your educational background and before you decided to make this your living, what was your work profile? Did you start of at casinos or was it always clubs? My style is and has always been tight aggressive. I'm very selective with my hands, everything has to go into consideration. Micro expressions are good of you pick it up and you're right about the 'happy feet' and torso. There are many many tells to pick up on in addition to timing and betting patterns and tilt factor. All those things give away valuable information. Figuring out what to do with the money is always a good problem to have and im business/street savy so I find options. I went to Baruch University and ran my first game in the school lol. We actually made the papers. I dropped out to open a clothing boutique (investment came from poker) It was always clubs and casinos were secondary but still profitable.
I'm reading this while in class at Baruch, I remember people used to play in the 3rd floor game room, but they seemed too good so I never got involved. Yep gameroom .. Where it all began. We had official tables there and everything!
What do you mean by happy feet/ torso? how can you see this at the table or casino? You can't see happy feet in most cases. Torso movement you can pick up by the shirt moving, it also depends on how close you are to the villain.
Hey, thanks for the AMA, just a few questions. Do you still consider it gambling or has it become another form of employment? Also what's your average income? Does it frighten you that you may lose a lot of money due to pure chance? Biggest win/loss? What are your thoughts on online poker? If given the opportunity would you choose another job? I havent considered it gambling since i got a real grasp of the game. I don't gamble. Never played a table game, scratch off. I won't even play lotto. All my friends are degenerates so I know the deal. My biggest win was 56k but I was being staked so gave away 60%. Biggest loss is 2k. Online poker is free money if you know what you're doing. A bunch of my close friends moved to Canada just to be able to play, 4 guys combined bankroll over 2 mill. I've gone too far in poker to walk away from it. It's like 2nd nature, most places would rather me not play because I'm a tightass or parasite in their eyes lol.
What was the buy-in on the stake game? I usually play 2/5 or 5/5 and sit down with a nickel ($500) Sometimes there are really good 1/3 games and I sit with 300.
being staked. Sorry - what does that mean? Yea it's when someone buys you into the game and get a % of the profits but covers the loss entirely in the event of a loss. I only let people stake me in bigger games I wouldn't normally play with my own money.
Knowing the games like you do, what is the lowest bankroll you'd consider having to sit at a $2/5 table? I go with the 20/25 buy-ins rule because I've went on bad runs before and I would rather have the insurance. So you if buyin for 300 to sit comfortably I want to have at least 6k to work with. Most people dont follow any kind of bankroll management and go broke over and over again.
What happens if you lose all the money? I understand they get nothing back but is that really what happens or do you have to pay a little back to them as a show of goodwill? Or do they just bust you kneecaps and call it even? Nope lol, stop watching Sopranos .. They take the hit as a bad investment. So far im up with all my backers
You have never had to pay makeup? Nope.
How about ARod? I've heard he's been to these underground spots on occasion. I was at the club when he was playing. You would be surprised how many celebrities I met at games. I have met more in clubs than in casinos.
What is the culture of these games like, or does it vary wildly? I saw some elderly Jews in your pictures - is that typical, or are there businessmen, or mostly gambling types? Do women play? Do you often play against the same people or does it cycle out fairly regularly? If I WERE to, ahem, get involved in these games, how what would I want to look for in a "good" room vs. a "bad" room, if there are such categories? I guess, what makes you prefer one place over another? They vary very wildly. Most places are a mixed crowd especially since nyc is a big melting pot. There are also games that are all albanian or asian etc.. One of the biggest factors in game selection is the rake/chop. There are some games that flat out rake 10% with no cap.they do this because they give out credit and because they are greedy. A good realistic rake for a city 1/2 or 2/5 is 10% with a $15 cap. Also you want to play against action players not tight ass grinders.
How many games are typically going on (say, in Manhattan alone) a weeknight vs. a weekend? It sounds like you've been around a while - do you have any sense of roughly how many people in the NY area are doing what you do, i.e. making living off these games? Dozens? Hundreds? More? At any given time from 8pm to 4am there are dozens of live cash games going on. Weekends most places open up earlier than weekdays because of the usual working clientele.
How would you compare the average skill level? For example, if you play online what stakes would you compare these games to? The skill level now is tougher than it was 5 years ago. When ESPN had poker on all the time it was literally free money if you knew anything. Now bad players lost tons of money and tightened up, still plenty of money to go around if you know where to look.
The most common games especially in the city are 1/2NL and 2/5NL .. Although the past year or so Omaha and rotation have been gaining momentum because it's so much more action.
Instead of putting up with 10% $15 cap rake, why don't you just take the bus/train/drive to AC and play at the Borgota? I go to ac and Parx frequently but you CANNOT compare the action in clubs vs. casinos
Meaning the action in casino's is more? Right? So why would you not want to play in them? The action in clubs is more.
Borgata or Parx: which do you prefer, and which has the better action for a moderate-skilled 1/2 player? Also, Casino 1/2 PLO; is the preflop action as heavy as it's rumored to be? I've heard that at Borgata, typical preflop PLO pot is $70. I get to Parx in a hour, borgata in 2. I would go to Borgata for the weekend and give it 3 solid sessions. Borgata has more talent but there's still money for the taking in 1/2. The 2/5 in Parx is juicy if you go at the right time. Well yea in a action packed game it's going to be potted preflop. Te underground games it gets repotted often, W I L D.
I would think you have more experienced players in clubs, where you need to know people to even be allowed in the game, than the casino, where someone can wonder over from the slots. Word spreads quick especially with free rolls and stuff so people brings friends and friends of friends.
So how is Teddy KGB doing these days? Prick still owes me 2 dimes.
I see you smoke reefer. Is drug use something you see often? Are you willing to share if that answer is yes? Yes and yes I guess.. It goes w the territory, there used to be games that would spark up the entire table nonstop.
How much money have you made? I don't even want to know how much I'm up lifetime because i spent so much money doing crazy stuff. I used to not keep track but I average 2k a week for 3 1/2 nights work, cash obviously. I should've been saving but for 5 years I was making more because of action and more bad players. Also, going around the world, crazy shopping and living life.
How are you making so much from 1/2 a week? is bluffing a big part of your game? I still dont know how to incorporate it into the 1/2 cash games since most people are willing to call you light. I play 1/2s in Brooklyn. It's a younger crowd and they're either overplaying or scared money.
Do you launder your money at all? Only when I forget to take it out of my pockets.
You mentioned action at the clubs is way looser than that in casinos. What are we talking about here? Are there a lot of LAGs? Loose passive? How do you find out about the games? Are they open to anyone, or do you need an invitation or someone in the know to bring you in? How are you supposed to overcome a 10% uncapped rake? You need a huge edge over the table to make that work. Is the play that bad? Loose passive for the most part, business men that get out of work and want to fool around before going home. They won't even play, just fish. They are open if someone brings you in and vouches for you.
Where's the advice? We're all ears.. I was bluffing.
Let's say I wanted to host games. First, is there money in it? And how does the house get paid? How much would the house make from a typical game you go to? What does the house provide? Just a secure location and a dealer? Yes and waitress/massage girl. You can rake a % from every pot. You can also do a tournament with a fee say $100+$15 for the house. They make a fee thousand a night before expenses. Big games make alot.
What would the typical % per pot be? 5% with a cap is optimal for you so you won't affect the game much and still make a few.
Ever bang Famke Janssen? No but I wouldn't mind owing her money and have her come try to collect.
So you were setup by the house and not the players? Did they deal from the bottom or something? What hand did you lose with when you were 'set up'? I think I flopped a straight and he rivered a boat. He had a loaded deck, did a fake shuffle and ..
How could you tell you were being setup? 1st hand new deck, and house player beats cash player on the river suckout.
Damnnn... doesnt the deck get cut after every shuffle before the deal? I dunno the typical underground shuffling/dealing routines so I really am curious. If they can fake a shuffle they can fake a cut too eh. Although; I'm assuming there aren't permanent dealers unlike what you'd find in a casino. When a new dealer comes in every 30minutes they have a deck. They're supposed to fan it out and show the players, sometimes they'll just wash or shuffle to speed things up.
While it looks suspicious I don't think that's enough info to conclude that the hand was rigged. I've seen suck outs like that in casinos yet nobody ever would make that conclusion but because it's an underground game suck out on the river is a set up? Aren't you jumping into conclusions too early? Or did you actually see more suspicious hands which added up to the whole game looking suspicious? I've taken nasty beats as well. In Vegas I lost w quads twice in one night (no BBJ) it just didn't add up, i felt a very bad vibe and I took a shot and approached the guy. He could've denied and taken his stand but he folded instead.
Could you talk about the 1998 movie "Rounders," and how realistic/not realistic the movie was? Surprisingly realistic to some degree.
Was it really based on norm macdonald? Does a zebra have spots?
Some might.. still doesn't answer the question. I'm not aware of any Norm McDonald connection.
Thanks for doing this AMA. What do you think the biggest weakness in your game is? Do you ever pick up on live tells? I havent really been able to spot any and wonder if there is anything to it. Do you love the rounding life? Regret it? My biggest weakness is not playing more often. I do well so I only play 3/4 times a week because of gf, family, business ventures and life. Also I usually cash out once I triple up. I figure if I book a win for a thousand im satisfied, sometime I should stay of game is juicy. I pickup new tells every session. My people reading skills are definitely up to par. The money is good but the lifestyle around it is crazy .. The late night hours and characters involved. I don't regret it for a second, poker has been supporting me for a long time and has given me a flexible schedule to do other things on the side like go on reddit lol.
Thanks for the response! The one pattern I have noticed is if I play 4-5 days in a week my level of play seems to go down. Then if a take a break for a few days I always come back to stronger. I guess regarding tells there really are no global signs and its just very person specific? Caros book of tells.. Use that as your foundation
Hey man, thanks for the AMA. Enjoyed reading it so far and have a few questions. Do you still enjoy playing? Is it more work now, or a bit of both? I ask as you mentioned you don't play too much. What's the biggest misconception, or thing that people get totally wrong about what you do? A lot of people here / on Reddit will ask about playing like a pro, but only for use in their house playing against friends and family. Would there be any more general advice you'd give to people in this situation about which aspects of their game to aim to improve? Cheers. More work now .. People that dont know me and they don't know the grind just think I gamble it up trying to get lucky. I sit and wait then keep sitting and waiting and think and analyze players. Lot of information gets processed I before I even get involved. It takes me at least an hour or so to get a feel for the game. Be aggressive!
I just started playing poker, doing usually 6 table micros on LockPoker or so, and coming out for the most part winning. I have the hardest time with implied odds though, and using them accurately to calc EV and such. Can you explain them a little to me? Its just not second nature to me yet. I played a .5/1 live cash game last night and busted, it sucked but I guess its fine, last time I went I came out hundreds up, How do you deal with the bad beats? I have read mostly every 'good' poker book, but what one would you suggest I re-read? If you are playing in underground rooms, do you skip (some/all) taxes? Name on 2+2? I just got back an hour ago from a long night, I'm sorry I don't want to type novels about ev or implied odds (google it) .. I deal with bad beats very well. I do NOT get emotional, if it's normal bad beat i simply play as if nothing happened. I'll actually get more action from the table because they assume I'm steaming. If its a huge monster bad beat I either cash out or take a trees timeout, that does the trick. No clue about the book, I've read and analyzed them all and you can extract valuable info from even the worst one, it's all about the experience on the table on my eyes. I have a side business for tax purposes.
What is the business? I import merchandise and sell on amazon/ebay and to retailers
How old are you? How did you start finding these games? How long have you been playing poker? 27, I was 18 when I first discovered what goes on behind shady looking doors.
Talk etiquette. Is everyone friends? If not, are you friendly with these strangers, or is it all business? Do you shake hands, joke around, etc, or sit down, play and leave? Very friendly usually.
I see a big jewish community, as a palestinian will i get harrased if i go to one of these clubs? Not at all. Somehow everyone blends well in poker games. I know a lot of palestinians that play on the regular.
What would be the best way for a beginner to improve their game? Any specific books that you would recommend? Super system thoroughly to get your brain thinking about it. There are plenty of very good forums online (2plus2). Plenty of resources out there.
How much time do you put in studying the game away from the tables? I've always heard that for every 4 hours you play, you should spend 1 hour studying (reviewing notes, reading the books, 2+2, etc). Is that an accurate ratio? I've read all the books and go on forums all the time. I don't really have a ratio
How much do you rely on math in your play? I have a strong math/statistics background, I just finished reading Mathematics of Poker by Chen and Ankenman. It covered basic probability, bayesian probability, game theory, and heuristics for quick calculations. Do you find yourself using this stuff or is your play more intuitive? My play is more intuitive.
How much do you usually go in the room with and how much do you take out? Since every place knows me and I'm not stupid I dont walk in with cash just in case spmething goes down. If I lose I just take care of it after the game or day after. I usually have 3 bullets of 500 each. That's for an average 2/5 or 5/5 to sit down comfortably.
Do you give lessons? If so how much? I gave pointers to friends and have helped people bring their skill level up. Me and some friends were thinking of marketing private poker lessons but im too lazy. If you're close by I wouldn't mind helping you, what's your offer?
Thanks for your input, gambling is not allowed in this sense in iceland so there is no culture for that, from as neutral or personal of a standpoint that you can manage, do you think gambling in this sense is good for a society/community or does it make t worse? I don't know about society but I'm glad poker is around.
My question is how deep is Chinatown? I have heard there is gambling behind every Canal Street store creating almost a second level. Can you confirm and describe any of the places you have been in Chinatown? That was not so recent. I'm sure i could find games in c town but they all speak chinese and I definitely don't trust that.
Do you have alligator blood? Also how does one find these games? You gotta be in the loop and I'm not sure about the blood, gotta ask my primary care physician to be sure.
So presumably a lot of guys are making their living money this way? Where does the money come from? How do rubes get into the game (so that they can give you their money)? Actually most people at these games come to gamble and hangout.
What's your cover story? Do you work a day job to keep up appearances, or do you just try not to live too extravagantly and draw too much attention? Does your girlfriend/family know this is what you do? Yes they know what I do and I do daytime work as well. I definitely calmed down compared to how I used to live.
Is dealing at things like these done how movies depict it or how you would at a house game, with the "dealer" role actually moving with the button? Or is there a dedicated dealer for each game? Curiosity as a casino dealer. Same as a casino dealer.
Do you ever splash the pot? No but it's on my bucket list.
Biggest pot you were involved in? Win it? 38k pot .. Won 56k that session but I was being staked so only kept 40% .. Still booked a monster win so couldn't complain.
Wow awesome, do you look up to any pros? would you play HU with any of them if you had the br? My style is more for a full table. I know a bunch pros personally and I invite them to games when they are in town. I fly to vegas on the regular just don't want to move there because I have too much stuff going on here.
Tips on finding these games? if i live in a different state. Ask around? I can smell a game and I can pick out a poker player out of a crowd .. I'm a sick child.
What was your revelation in the game? I mean what insight really opened up your game and made you a good player instead of an average player and seperated you from the mass? I started out dealing before playing for real. After a few months I noticed that players are making plenty of mistakes I could make them pay for. I slowly started grinding and found my style and it's been working for me for a long time. It's just a grind, you wait for your prime opportunity then you maximize and wait again.
Most profitable exploit? Reraising a tilted aggressor with a set if you know he hit anything good.
Lol. step one. flop set. step two... make sure villian has something good and is on tilt. step 3.. raise. Yes, huge exploit you discovered there. Maybe you can give me a good example and I'll put it into use lol.
What's your best advice on becoming better in general at poker? Absorb as much information as possible and actually apply it! Find your leaks and seal them
Hi thanks for doing this. 2 questions. How did you fund your initial bank roll? What is a good way to work on reading people? I organized a house game and raked a little bit and went from there. Caros book of tells and just start watching people. Look at the flop and your hole cards last, first watch players and pickup info to use. You'll get used to it after awhile.
How good are you at online poker? Definitely rusty havent played for real in years.
What do you generally buy in with for a 5/5 NL? I usually buy in whatever the average stack is. If the biggest chip stack is a fish then I'll buyin for the max. $500 is the usual amount early in the night/game.
Is there anything you do to maintain your health? Sitting for hours while eating junk food and stressing over hands must take a toll on your body. I don't eat junk food and I try not to stress. I workout 5 days a week and play plenty of sports.
Is it "card-shark" or "card-sharp"? Shark.
How to you keep from going on tilt after losing a massive all in 80/20 ? I'm used to the bad beats. It's part of the game man.
How did you build your initial bankroll? I started out running a house game without any intention of playing for a income and once the game died out and I had about $800 and didn't look back m. Never went broke either, I'm owed plenty though.
You mentionned robberies/raids and it never involving the players , im wondering is your money somehow ( insured ) even in the case of a robbery by the hosts ? 99% of the time you wont get your money back, that why I dont walk in with cash. There has been cases where the house gives players money back out of their own pocket but usually people take advantage and lie about the amounts lost.
Do you play on Merge? I don't know what that is. I don't play online since they closed main sites I down years ago.
Ah, yeah just the network that US players use now. Was up in Canada last week playing on my dad's Pokerstars account. Goddam do I miss that shit. It'll be back.
Let's hope! :) Anyways in regards to your thread: what are some of the bigger names you've played with in these underground games? Players or celebrities?
Players. Matusow, jamie gold, Ivey for 5 minutes. Lots of Internet pros, sry I'm tired can't think straight lol.
When you play can you calculate in your head the number of outs, pot/implied odds and EV? I can roughly calculate the number of outs in certain hands and maybe pot odds, but it's still gets my head spinning. It boggles my mind that people can do that much number crunching in their heads every hand they are in, so I wonder if serious players actually do it? I ballpark it.
Is your thinking along the lines of "I have X many cards to make my hand, if I call $X I can win $X" and make your decision on that? That's about as far as I am right now with my thinking. For example, if I'm facing a call and I need one card to make a flush and say I need to call $3 to make $30, I will usually make the call. Is that proper thinking? Give or take .. I do all the equations in my heads during the actions while trying to read players and order a drink from waitress as I smoke a cigarette
As someone who lives an hour from AC, I can confirm that Asians love to gamble. Because they can't drive properly on the way there?
Do you ever plan on "retiring". If so, what will you? Sure why not.
I went to the casino last weekend for the first time. I went into the poker room and sat down at a 1-1 table with $60. As soon as I sat down I completely forgot how to play. I have been playing since I was like 8. I just got so nervous for some reason. Did that ever happen to you? Have you ever gotten so nervous you completely forget what you're doing? No.
Why do you think super system is relevant to the current hold em game? Frankly, why do you think 5/5 live poker is interesting enough for an AMA? I don't know.
Word met up? i have a few friends in bk. Send me a pm.
Does the place get shaked down by the mob? A few games pay for 'protection'
What is the best advice you can give to a player suffering consecutive losses? I always felt I was decent at the game, but my record lately doesn't seem to agree with me. Take a break and analyze your game. Maybe the stakes aren't right maybe your game selection is off.
What is your current bankroll? About 55k.
At what point will you move to 5/10? (i'm assuming these clubs run 1000NL, right?) I play 5/10 if a friend refers a juicy soft game to me.
The Sands casino in Bethlehem, PA has real juicy 5/10 action. $1500 max. I never had a chance to go. I'm going to check it out this coming weekend.
I'm curious about this.. I would never expect big faces in an underground scene especially since they probably know plenty of ("home") games. Why take a risk (seems like a small risk from what OP has been saying) when they can just play legit. Action and credit and comfort of it. Trees alcohol strippers whatever the players want basically.
You should crosspost this to /poker How can I do that? I'll give u poker advice in return.
I hope your not smoking them dutches also where in ny im in ny i want to play Bk all day.
Some horse/backer agreements will have a make-up or cake stipulation. The losses are originally eaten by the backer, but then a percentage of future wins goes towards paying back a percentage of the previous losses. True.
SPOILERS! I'm only on Season 2 :( He misses the gutshots :/
Came here to ask about robberies/raids. Go on.
