Haskell chess engine update

Hi all,
Two months ago I posted that I was going to learn Haskell by writing a chess engine (here). Today, I'm posting an update and looking for some help and code critique.
The engine is called Hchess and is located here. Currently it can play a game of chess and beat me pretty consistently, although that's not saying all that much! Quite a lot has to be implemented in order to have got to this point; see the README.md file. In summary, we have to have three main things working: * Valid move generation * Game tree search * UCI (chess engine protocol)
This process has taught me a huge amount. Some highlights: * I use TemplateHaskell in order to generate all rays for all pieces on all squares so that move generation is a lookup in a huge array (see src/Rays.hs). This was really fun to implement, originally these moves where calculated at runtime, but i could just lift the same code and have it calculated at compile time with minimal effort. * Parsing in Haskell is just amazing. It took a while to grock megaparsec but once I got it, writing a parser was never so much fun. This is mainly in exe/UCI.hs where we parse UCI commands. This module also taught me the use of the State monad, more specifically StateT since we need to use state within IO.
If people would like to read the code and provide some suggestions as to how I could improve that would be most welcome.
The focus has now moved onto improving strength now that I have the basics implemented. This mainly involves tuning and performance enhancements. This is where I have become stuck and am looking for some pointers on what I can do. After doing a profile of many games, there appears to be a suspect function: COST CENTRE MODULE SRC %time %alloc ! Board src/Board.hs:46:1-49 20.6 29.8 I've tried switching to a Storable vector but that didn't seem to have much of an improvement.
Oh and if people are curious as to how it stands up to my previous c++ engine, after 500 games the score was: * 0 wins for hchess * 468 wins for mace * 32 draws
A long way to go!

Need Some Mods? Look No Further!

This list is currently incomplete.
Before we dive into all the mod links, a couple of notes:
When you install a mod into your game it reads certain game files. When two mods try to use the same file it can cause conflicts. Some of these conflicts can be severe enough to cause game crashes or even corruption. We advise everyone to check for conflicts with the Hack Conflict Detection Utility mod. Some mods conflict in ways HCDU can't detect, although it is very rare. Please check modder's conflict lists to make sure.
If you have The Sims 2: The Ultimate Collection, the HCDU might have trouble finding your Downloads folder. Here are some instructions if you're having trouble getting it to work.
Pescado's mods are great but they often conflict with others as they are not engineered to take other mods into account. Most of them do work with mods that access the same file but they need to load first. Please rename all of them in a way so that they are at the top of your folders, or make a separate folder for Pescado's mods and rename it so that it is at the top of your entire Downloads folder.
A lot of custom content requires you to install CEP as well as Smarter EP check. Please download and install both of these before downloading any of the following mods. Thank you!
You can also use the Sims 2 Clean Pack Installer to organize your Sims 2 custom content.
A huge thank you to u/hobgoblin8000 who not only provided a vast majority of these mods but also introduced me to a lot of great mods as well!

Foundry Virtual Tabletop - Version 0.6.0 Update Notes

From Atropos_nyx:
The day is finally upon us, it is with extreme pride and pleasure that I can say Foundry Virtual Tabletop is released!
This release is version 0.6.0, the first Foundry VTT version in the "release" channel which is available to all Foundry Virtual Tabletop license holders.
It's been a surreal journey to reach this point, I will simply say "thank you" to everyone who has supported the project and given me encouragement. I am incredibly grateful and proud of what I have accomplished. I hope you all can see and feel the love that has gone into this work.

Overview of Changes

This release update includes all of the features and changes included in the prior Beta 0.5.7 Update as well as a number of minor changes, bug fixes, and API housekeeping changes.
Please be sure to join me on Twitch later today (Friday, May 22) and tomorrow (Saturday, May 23) for live developer Q&A discussing the release, reflection on the project, and charting out the road ahead.

About this Update

Please read the following important reminder about this update.
This is a full Release build and should be stable for all users. It is recommended for all users to update to this version unless it is immediately before a game session. Even in the case of "release" channel updates, please take care to periodically back up your critical user data in case you experience any issues.

How to Update

To apply this update, return Foundry Virtual Tabletop to the Configuration and Setup page and access the Update Software tab and choose the "Release (Stable)" channel in the dropdown menu. It is recommended for most users to stay on the Release channel for all updates unless you have a specific desire to get Alpha or Beta changes in the future.
If you have a purchased license key applied, you do not need to enter anything into the "Update Access Key" field.
After clicking Check for Update confirm that you are presented with the 0.6.0 update notes and click the Download button to begin the update process. Allow some time for this process to conclude, when it is finished your server will automatically restart (if Electron) or shut down (if Node.js).

Reporting Issues and Providing Feedback

If you encounter issues or have feedback to share, please use one of the following three reporting channels, ordered by preference:

  1. Discord Server: My preferred method to collect feedback is through our Discord server where I have created a dedicated channel for Beta 0.5.7 feedback. If you are able to join our Discord community it's the best way to engage with me directly for feedback.
  2. GitLab Tracker: You are welcome to create issue reports directly in the GitLab tracker here, but please take caution to ensure your problem has not already been reported by checking other open (and closed) issues in the upcoming milestone before creating a new report.
  3. Bug Report Form: There is an official bug report form on the official website. Please go to the following address and select "Bug Report" as your category. https://foundryvtt.com/contact-us/
Please stay up to date on progress by following the project roadmap on GitLab: https://gitlab.com/foundrynet/foundryvtt/boards.

Print and play Harry Potter board game: Mischief at Hogwarts

I made this Harry Potter-themed board game for my friends, and I thought it might help make time in quarantine go by faster for those that are stuck at home. It's a mix between a quiz and a party game, called Mischief at Hogwarts. [Here's a pic of a lot of it](https://i.imgur.com/3hKcOqU.jpg). The board piece is inspired by the Maurauder’s Map that Harry is gifted in the third book.
The game focuses on adventure and laughter. Everyone has a chance to win, no matter their level of HP knowledge or skills. You will feel ridiculous and slightly embarrassed, but so will the other players - It's a bonding experience.
Short about the game: The players are students arriving at Hogwarts for an exciting year of adventures: You learn to master spells, duels, potions and pass your exams before facing Voldemort himself. Here spells fly in all directions, so wands at the ready if you please!
Recommended for:
4-6 people (3 not tested. 6+ works with a tweak)
Harry Potter fans (you do not need to be an expert)
Families
Age: 10+
Available in following languages: English. Norwegian.
Print and play:
Use game pieces from games you already own:
2 x regular hexagon (1-6) dices
Different coloured pieces to represent the players
Wands: Chopsticks, flower sticks, sticks, pens, etc.
Adjustments: You can remove duel or spell cards that you don't have items for. Though making these items - mustaches, cat ears and front teeth - is a fun activity on its own (Instructions and templates are included in the game).
It took me a few years to develop the game, then two more to translate it from my native Norwegian into English, while also making instructions for you on how to print your own copy. There are probably still errors here and there, or things that are unclear if new situations occur that haven't been encountered by the rules. I hope you'll let me know how it felt to play. If you have questions or want to give constructive feedback I'd much appreciate it.

Update 0.5.6 BETA (Unstable)

Hey everyone, we've got a new update! As a reminder, you MUST use your key from foundryvtt.com (or the key you received in email from Patreon if you are a backer) to unlock this update. It is NOT considered a stable update and may require additional setps to install (see below in huge text). It also may contain breaking changes, meaning content you have previously made may need some adjustment after you install this, and most modules will NOT work with this version until the respective module authors update their code. If you understand this and want to take the risk, read on. If you don't, you are advised to wait for v0.5.7 (a stable build) or final release!
From Atropos:
Hi everyone I'm thrilled to release Foundry Virtual Tabletop Beta 0.5.6, a major update which is an "unstable" Alpha release for Council-tier Patreon supporters and Foundry license owners.

Overview of Changes

This update includes a ton of major new features including a major overhaul of the File Browser with new display modes, drag-and-drop Tile placement, Folder creation, and path visibility controls. This update also includes substantial updates to the Tiles system as well as other Placeable Objects through a major refactoring of the drag-and-drop interaction workflows which unify their UX. Lastly, there are a lot of important and valuable API improvements which will make it easier to work with certain core concepts in the Foundry environment.
I'm experimenting with a new routine of hosting a Developer Q&A on Twitch to review and showcase the new features each update. Thanks to everyone who joined me for the first installment, you can find the broadcast here if you'd like to see these changes in action. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/616481546

About this Update

Please read the following important reminder about this update.

Many of you have arrived recently to the Foundry community you will not yet be familiar with the version structure of software updates. This is an Alpha channel build, meaning it includes lots of new and exciting features, but also has a higher risk of instability as well as a high likelihood of module conflicts.

This update is intended to be safe for use in actual games, but as always back up your critical user data before updating in case, for any reason, you need to roll back. If you prefer to use a large number of modules, or a few modules which you view as critical to your experience - you should wait for the more stable Beta version 0.5.7.

How to Update

To apply this update, return Foundry Virtual Tabletop to the Configuration and Setup page and access the Update Software tab. If you wish to install this update, you must select the Alpha (Unstable) channel. If you are a Patreon supporter only or have not applied your purchased FVTT license, you must provide an Update Access Key which is available on Patreon.
If you have a purchased license key applied, you do not need to enter anything into the "Update Access Key" field.
After clicking Check for Update confirm that you are presented with the 0.5.6 update notes and click the Download button to begin the update process. Allow some time for this process to conclude, when it is finished your server will automatically restart (if Electron) or shut down (if Node.js).

Reporting Issues and Providing Feedback

The feedback cycle for these releases is very important. There are three good ways to provide feedback which are ordered according to my own preference:

  1. Discord Server: My preferred method to collect feedback is through our Discord server where I have created a dedicated channel for Beta 0.5.0 feedback.
Please go to the following address and select "Bug Report" as your category. https://foundryvtt.com/contact-us/
Thank you all so very much for supporting my project and relying on Foundry Virtual Tabletop to bring us all together amidst health concerns and difficult times of social distancing. Please stay healthy, care for each other, and stay up to date on progress by following the project roadmap on GitLab: https://gitlab.com/foundrynet/foundryvtt/boards.

Help! I need tips to draw a hexagonal grid!
Hello, I need some advice on a technical problem. I’d like to make a hexagonal grid on a large transparent vinyl. But here, I tried with the help of a template («Unfold» sheet of a board game Haven & Ale) but it went wrong after a few lines. I was able to do about 1 foot by 1 foot and a half. I need 3 feet by 3 feet. I would like to draw the grid on a big carton and then place the vinyl on it to copied the grid. Do you have a way, better of mine, to draw a hexagonal grid quickly and efficiently? Thank’s!

The most Entitled Boss I ever worked for. Practically used interns as personal slaves

I recently heard some of my old Boss's bullshit and decided to write my story down. I shared this story with a colleague and he told me to post it on Reddit so here goes. It's a long one because it all happened over a year so apologies for that and TL;DR at the bottom.

The cast:
OP = Me, a young kinda alternative design student.
Boxxy = Colleague that taught me how the work was done and became a friend later.
Beardy = My direct coworker who seemed stoned all the time. Nice guy but not very social.
Asshole Boss = The main antagonist here. Your typical Entitled Boss who considers employees slaves and sucks up to successful people.
Nice Boss = Nice boss, the guy co-owning the business together with Asshole Boss. Was really friendly but always really busy.

So this is the story about my first internship. I was in my second year of design school and 18 years old. The university expected all students to do a half year internship at a business.

They required the company you'd work at to have at least two design-related experts, but mostly the internship was meant to teach us what it likes to have a full-time 40 hour job in the work field.

Being your typical university student I was of course late with applying for an internship. I tried to find a internship near the gaming field, but those were hard to come by if you weren't a hard-core programmer. So after some applications I got an interview at a business. They weren't my first choice as I had another few options still running, but they paid better than my other options (mind you this was about 350 euros for full time work), and they worked with large well known brands so I took the job. The girl interviewing me seemed really nice and they really needed someone for the job.

So I arrive at work and realize that all the other colleague's are pretty young. During my first lunch break I learn that pretty much all my colleagues (about 20) were interns. The only actual employees were the two owners Asshole and Nice Boss, the nice lady that did operations, and three account managers. Usually the bosses and a few of the account managers were gone off to meetings with potential partners. Mostly all the interns had to do was post stuff on our websites under the job description "Content Marketeers". Some of them had to write a thesis or something, others were just straight up watching Netflix. Also interns had to place lunch on the big table, do the dishes, vacuum the office, and get coffee for clients.

When I start my work week a colleague who I'll call Boxxy teaches me how to get started. Basically all the work that had to be done was based off designed templates that you would just save as a new file and fill with the info you got per email. Pretty straightforward work, and not really designing. The templates were usually pricing plans containing the huge numbers the company asked from their customers. We were basically hired because we knew how Photoshop and InDesign worked, but mostly we just had to edit text and numbers. There was another designer who I'll call Beardy who started a day before me but was sick on my fist day. Boxxy told me she had taught him what to do already, but that he wasn't that experienced. She also told me that Beardy and I would be on our own in 2 days because she was an intern before us and had to go back to school. She'd be back one day a week as a side job next to her studies.

So Boxxy was gone and me and Beardy were on our own. He was socially awkward but so was I and we got along pretty well. We did our templating thing and took care of e-mails and divided the work nicely. Being "designers" we were the most busy because the account managers kept throwing new presentation and pricing plan requests at us via e-mail. Occasionally we would get a separate "project". So my first one resulted in my very first encounter with Asshole Boss.

One of the other interns had gotten the request to place banners on the websites of student clubs. As all these student clubs had self made, Wordpress fueled, comic sans filled websites, all banners that were already up were resized by the site, and considering our company logo was round, this was now oval. Asshole Boss obviously did not appreciate this and decided that this had to be changed. So the interns came to me and asked me to Photoshop the banners. Well this was a hell of a job, because there were 200 sites that all had to have 4 different banners. And considering they all had different sites that meant I had to make about 800 images. So I decided to be smart about this. I checked each site, looked up what pixel dimensions they used, got a template that had about 8 basic banner formats. And found the proportion that fit closest to it. It would not affect the resizing or barely (as most images were squared images placed in rectangle containers). and i'd only have to make 8x4 different banners this way, and if they planned to make a different one in about half a year (which they had already planned) it was easily adjusted. So after working hard on this I came in early the next day and told my boss the good news. He was furious at me for not making everything exactly as he said. He also wanted me to add hyperlinks to our website to the actual jpeg(image) files. When I told him this is not possible he got mad at me. There the first cracks started to come in.

A few days later Nice Boss comes from his office and walks over to me and Beardy. He had an presentation that he needed fixed and asked if I had time. I said "sure" and he sat next to me while I had to literally edit text in Powerpoint. I mean I had gone to design school for over 2 years now and such skills are an essential asset for adding a bullet point in Powerpoint, right? So I did as he asked and when we were done he asked me if I liked how the presentation looked. I said it didn't like it considering it looked like a basic Windows Vista wallpaper with text smacked on it. He asked if I could make it "a bit nicer" and I said I could try. The presentation was about IT. I literally Googled the word "Abstract" in and found a free image of just hexagons and used it as the wallpaper. I made it a bit more slick and IT-like with a transparent background and that was it. When he came back from his meeting he looked confused at first, but later decided he absolutely loved it. So he went into his office to get Asshole Boss and said "look at how well OP made this, it looks so much better now!" Asshole Boss responded with a shrug and a comment that I had forgotten a comma in a title. Maybe if I had finished design school I would not have forgotten the comma.

Few weeks later Asshole Boss is printing another business presentation I made and walked over to me furious. "The lines are not all evenly wide" he barked. I apologize and ask him to show me what lines I did not measure out properly. He gives me a printed file of the presentation which in my PDF was a full size photo with some text over it. I ask him whats incorrect and he points at the white space around the photo. "You mean the printer space?" I ask confused "Yes that, they are not all evenly wide!" he replies like I'm a dumb child. "But I can't fix that" I said "The printer needs that space to grab hold of the paper, you are printing this with a normal office printer". He replied: "Our customers might want to print it themselves and I do not want them to see these ugly lines, so fix it!" I was dumbfounded. I replied: "With all due respect but literally every office printer will have a different width for the white space, it depends on the printer, there is really nothing that can be done about it unless you get it printed professionally or use a cutting machine to cut off the white space." He stared at me, mumbled that I still needed to fix it, and left to get back in his office.

About a week later our beloved Asshole Boss had another issue with the printer. He said I made the files too big and that that slowed down the printer. I told him he might want to try the attached compressed PDF(printers tend to like PDF's better) instead of printing directly from Powerpoint but he said that was a stupid idea.

Later he came up with a presentation that he did not have any content for. I just had to design it and make it pretty although he did not tell me what to make pretty. His requests went from unbelievably stupid to outright idiotic. Meanwhile the account managers and Nice Boss were slowly appreciating my work as I often stayed late to fix mistakes, made entire websites for an event they just came up with out of scratch and actually dealt with customer problems myself. Beardy although working hard and starting to get really good at his job got less praised due to his inexperience and outright stoned attitude (he wasn't actually stoned, he just seemed really uninterested about everything that was going on). I worked late a lot of times and put out a lot of fires. I came home every day stressed, and crying out all the frustration Asshole Boss was causing me with his bullshit.

Considering that me and Beardy were constantly so busy they actually hired three more design interns. These were even less experienced than Beardy on his first day as for them this was a type of internship to learn what kind of company they liked. They would only work part time and for like 6 weeks. The operations lady (the one managing all these interns always) got really sick at the time and was also getting stressed out by Asshole Boss' bullshit to the point she stayed home with a burn out, which meant I was now also responsible for the three newbie interns, and had to help them with their tasks. Considering I did not get paid any extra for that or was even consulted in hiring them I didn't bother too much. I mean I tried, and one of them was actually useful, but they made lots of mistakes and were just a lot slower than me. I just taught them how to do what they had to do until one day Asshole Boss came up to me and yelled that the new interns weren't doing anything and that Blue(one of the interns) had been Photoshopping panda's for the past 3 weeks. My response was that it was probably a pretty cool Panda by now and that I was not responsible for the other interns, considering I was an intern myself. I later told Blue to try not to have his panda on screen while Asshole Boss would pass by.

As the office manager was sick all of her work fell to a poor intern ill call Tess. She was now basically used as Asshole Boss's secretary. If he needed something she had to do it, from fixing the air conditioning to buying groceries for Asshole Boss. Though she was kind of a tough girl, I've seen her cry in his office while he yelled at her for making a mistake (all the walls were made of glass in the office)

Tess wasn't the only intern used for his personal errands. He once walked up to my colleague (another intern) who was sitting next to me, and gave him his iPhone with an opened screen protector box. He told my colleague to go to the Apple store to have the screen protector stuck to the screen. I had seen Asshole Boss try to do it himself and fail. My colleague told Asshole Boss he could fix it without going to the Apple store. Asshole Boss disagreed considering he had been trying to stick a screen protector to his screen for the past half our in his office and he did not get it done. After a 10 minute discussion Asshole Boss finally agreed that my colleague could stick the screen protector on himself. He also used another colleague (intern ofcourse) as a personal babysitter for his daughter. He'd just give her some of his daughters playthings and brought his daughter into the office, putting her at my colleagues desk and tell my colleague to take care of his daughter.

He also got me to do some work. You see, colleagues asked me for personal designs all the time like a pretty resume or a presentation for a job interview elsewhere (yeah that happened) they usually tipped me as I did most of the work outside work hours considering how busy I was. Asshole Boss was on another level as he had me make wedding albums for his friends (I did not know these people), a website for his girlfriend, and some Photoshopped Christmas cards (at which he insisted I'd Photoshop in real snow which is hella ugly).

Another funny time was when I was just working, minding my business when Asshole Boss comes up to me asking me if I could have a meeting with him. "Sure" I said, and I followed him to the Board room. Halfway through the hall he gets a phone call and tells me he really has to take this one. "Sure" I say again and I walk back to my spot. The account managers look at me surprised but I just shrug and sit at my desk continuing my work. He comes back to me and tells me to follow him again and so I do. This time we actually make it to the board room, but as soon as we sit down he gets Face timed by his 5 year old daughter. As he is making kiddie sounds to his daughter I slowly walk off to sit at my desk and wait again. The account managers see me return and ask me why I'm not in the meeting. I reply that his daughter called. They smirk a bit, I shrug and sit down again. 10 minutes later he comes to my desk again and asks me to have the meeting. "Are you sure about that?" I ask dryly and the whole account manager table bursts into laughing. He looks annoyed and we have the meeting, which was him complaining about a presentation and telling me it had to look "more nice". Did not even bother to ask him to elaborate on that.

I think one of the funniest moments was when I had a meeting with Asshole boss and Beardy. As Asshole Boss would always try to small talk with anyone, he tried so with Beardy. Mistakes were made... Beardy told him about playing World of Warcraft. Now there is no subject in the world Asshole Boss would ever admit to not know about but our friendly Mountain Dew drinking Beardy really threw him off his game. I used every bit of willpower not to laugh as Asshole Boss pretended to know all about Orcs and XP.

Summer came and my internship was nearly over. In my school report I didn't write about not learning anything from experienced people at all nor did I write about how much of an asshole my boss was. I pretended I was just a hard worker that gained a lot of experience. I wasn't about to do half a school year over for this jerk, and though I didn't learn jack shit about design I did learn a lot about the more business aspects of this workplace. The office lady came back and she wrote a great review about my work and I got an A for my internship. All interns internship would end around May/June and then summer vacation would start. Now the company was looking for interns that would stay the summer to get paid more and get more experience. Through it all I kind of wanted to stay since Boxxy had told me what she earned(about 9 bucks an hour), and it was some good money for 18 year old me. Also I'd be staying the summer together with Boxxy and as we got along and are still friends to this day I did like the idea of staying. Also the account managers were nice and friday afternoon drinks were always happy moments(and free).

The interns that wanted to stay, including me, got offered minimum wage for the work. The interns all together wrote a mail to Asshole Boss, and after some discussion he upped the wage. It was however still less than Boxxy made which I didn't think was fair since we did the same stuff. So I told the other interns to get me out of the mail chain and if anyone asked about it say that I would no longer stay the summer. This went unnoticed until my last two weeks of my internship. Nice boss came up to me and asked me what my plans were for the summer. I said I'd probably be looking for a part time job to cover the summer. He replied surprised at that I wasn't staying with them. I said I didn't really feel like staying, he asked me to have a meeting with him in the board room the next day, scheduled it. The meeting was mainly small talk and him telling me that as an designer I'd get the same wage as Boxxy. I was satisfied and I stayed. I made more money than I ever had so far, and quit my weekend job at the bakery (which I only did once a month as substitute since the start of the internship). That summer bought me a nice new laptop and some fun times with Boxxy after work having drinks.

The new school year started and Boxxy kinda quit, saying she'd be too busy with school this year as she had her final internship at another company. I stayed with the company and taught the new interns everything. My school year wasn't that demanding since I decided to follow a course that took a year instead of the reserved half year, which meant I only needed to be at school about 6-12 hours a week. Seemed like a good deal considering I could still work 2 days a week at the company to help the interns out, as well as studying.

This is when things got ugly. The new interns weren't as nice as the ones before. We also got a new office manager and another person who would take care of the interns. Some of the account managers that I got along with left, others got back. I was only there 2 days a week so I didn't bond that well with the whole new intern crew. I didn't get projects anymore because I was only there two days a week. Understandable but alas. One night I was out and I got a phone call from the new intern manager. He tells me that asshole boss asked him to deliver the bad news but that he's sure I understand it from business perspective and considering money. They no longer need me, the interns know what to do now. I was flabbergasted, I mean I was only 18 at the time. When I got home I told my parents what happened and they were furious. I would work the next Friday so they came up with where I would legally stand etc. I checked my work email from home and saw that the new office lady had already as ordered by Asshole Boss sent out an e-mail to the entire workfloor that Friday would be my last day. Yes, before a face-to-face conversation was held, the whole work floor was told about my goodbye party.

So Friday came around and I got to the office, the only account manager left that worked with me all summer (all other account managers left due to Asshole Boss's shenanigans) and Nice Boss were on a vacation so it was just me up against Asshole Boss. I told him that I'd either remain working for four more weeks, or I wouldn't work and he'd pay me 2 more weeks without me working. He took the two weeks but later he said he mistook it for me working for two more weeks. I was done, I left angrily never to come back. Note here is that he didn't "technically" fire me. But just expected me to not work for the upcoming months. I asked if he could guarantee me work in the future, he said he could not. They never ended my contract so I guess it expired.

Few weeks later Boxxy was done with her internship and was asked back at the company since the interns were apparently screwing up. She could use the extra money, so she took up the job. At some point Decent Boss, a new owner of the company who joined two weeks before I left called me up. I had never spoken much to him before. He asked me if I remembered the second company they were starting for a different field, with a different managing director. I said I remembered them doing research on the market. Apparently this company was starting off now, and needed their entire Corporate Identity done. They didn't want to "lend" their own designers for it anymore considering they were re-branding themselves so the second company needed their own designer. I'd get the same wage but in a different company, in the same hallway as the original company I worked for. I said I was interested, considering at this point I was really running out of money. I went to work for the second company, my contract specifically stated that the first company(Asshole Boss's) could not order me to do any work for them, and that I'd be working for the second company exclusively. The guys at the second company were a lot nicer, and from there I met loads of new contacts that got me to the job I am right now.

As for asshole boss, he was on a vacation when I started working at the second company. Considering all walls were made out of glass he saw me sitting at my desk. He walked in and demanded what I was doing there. I told him I worked for the second company now. He walked out annoyed. Considering I got a fresh start at this company and I could decide pretty much everything I really gave it my best. I made prettier stuff than I had ever made for the Asshole Boss's company. One day I had made giant roll up banners for the second company that were used for an event and outside of that were put in our office. One day when I got back from lunch I saw Asshole Boss, standing in our office with a design intern, pointing at the roll up banner I made, and telling him what to copy for his own design. I cleared my throat and they left. I continued working.

There were times things were busy at Asshole Boss's company. Whenever the account manager that I knew well came over with a small request, I did it because she had always been nice to me. Whenever Asshole Boss tried the same I refused, telling him I was busy. Boxxy once told me he didn't even dare ask me sometimes because he was afraid I'd decline. About a year later he dared asking me to work for him again. I doubled my rates and had it put on my own freelance business I started that year (assholetax). After I graduated I left the company I now worked for on good terms and continued my career elsewhere. From what I hear from my old contacts, Asshole Boss doesn't change. Barely any employee lasts there over a year and I think that although there's about 20-30 people working there, in the past 5 years there have worked about 250 employees there.

TL;DR
Interned for the worst boss ever, got sorta fired because interns were cheaper. Got to work at an other company in the same building (even same floor).

Mine of phandelver paper minis

I've just about finished setting up the dungeons, I used a large three ring binder and printed out each section of each dungeon and marked each page with sticky tabs. I set the binder up like an isle and just flip the page over to which section they decide to take. I also bought a large picture frame for a combat board and used a black sharpie and made grid lines on the glass, I went with hexagons instead of squares. Then all I have to do is slide different backgrounds in to the frame. (Think I might try and rig up some led lights inside the frame to light up the combat board. But the real question is there a good place to get all the minis I need? I was gonna make paper minis, I went to Google and found some templates, but the quality isn't that great. I found some sites where you can buy paper minis templates, but if I'm gonna buy minis I'll buy the real thing. I'm just trying to save some money. I'm also trying to get it set up before Christmas, because that's when we get together and play games, so this year I'm gonna make them play D&D. Most likely we will only play through the first dungeon ( cragmaw hideout). So all I need are some goblins, bugbear, wolves, goblin leader, gundren and his companion, and the heros. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

A Guide to the Menus, Missions, and Managing Survivors/Weapons/Other Cards

Hi! I’m aFrequ and I thought I’d make an attempt at making a guide explaining the menus on the main screen for all the new players trying out the Save the World mode of the game. I actually started writing this a long time ago but got too busy/less motivated after seeing how long my planned outline was. However, after seeing some recent complaints in discord about how difficult it is to navigate the menu along with the game being on sale I decided I'd finish this. Let’s get started!

Format/Overview

The guide will be formatted to start out with the main topic as the header with a hyperlink to an image of the screen. The following subtopics will explain what each part of the image is.
I will go over the following:
  1. "Main Menu"
  2. Play Tab
  3. Map Tab
  4. Heroes Tab
  5. Squads Tab
  6. Armory Tab
  7. Skills Tab
  8. Loot Tab
  9. Store Tab
  10. Quest Tab
Following these, I will include with a short FAQ covering survivors and weapons along w/ other info and some additional tips then close with a link to my other works and of course, the closing. Before we begin, I'll open with a question so you know what to expect to get from this:

What exactly can I expect to find in this post? Is it just explaining what you can do at each tab?

Yes, but in addition to that I will include other info which I think are valuable relevant to the tabs/section I'm covering. For example, the squads tab will have a semi-indepth guide to managing your survivors. The map tab will give some tips on missions, etc.
Note that this is mostly oriented for people brand new to the game so if you've been playing for a while some (well, probably most) may be common knowledge to you, but depending on how long you've been playing there might be some info that you might find useful in which case I'd suggest skipping over to the Map section and Squads section (some tips on missions and managing survivors pretty much) and the FAQ/Additional tips.

Main Menu

Homebase Power

Homebase Power is an attempt to represent the sum of all your stats in one number. I would ignore this for the most part. If you want to get an accurate depiction of someone's actual power, you can ask them for their actual mainstat or look at how much party mainstat they are giving. I'll dive into the stats next. Homebase Power does not decide whether a mission will be colored grey, green, yellow, orange, or red. Lowering it to match the zone does not reward you with xp if that zone is already grey. This is determined by your hidden commander level which we will touch on later.

Stats AKA F.O.R.T

Next up is your stats, or as some people refer to them F.O.R.T (Fortitude Offense Resistance Tech). Fortitude increases your health and health regen by 1% for each point in it. Offense increases weapon damage by 1% per point, resistance increases shield and shield regen by 1% per point, and tech increases your trap damage, ability, gadget damage, and healing multiplier by 1% per point. If you are just starting out, I'd try to just ignore this and just know what they do. I'll go more in-depth into them once we reach survivor squads.

Party Members

In this section, if you have any, your party members will be displayed along with their specific party stats in the respective fields. If you are in-game, any players in the game will be displayed here as well, along with their party stats.

Bonuses/XP BaSkill Points

In this section, your bonuses, xp bar, and available stat points will be shown. Available bonuses are: your daily xp boost, your active xp boost, and your founder party xp buff. The orange hexagon represents the number of skill points you have available to spend towards you skill tree. You can gain more by leveling up you commander level (everytime your xp bar fills up you level up and gain x amount of skill points depending how far you are into the game (you will start out with only getting 1). For some reason they do not display your commander level, but there is a way to see it by using this site: https://stormshield.one/pve/stats/Plusplusle?retry=2 (I have my own linked because I'm dumb and see no option to search yourself on the home page of the site). There is a cap to commander level. You will not gain enough SP to max out all trees through leveling up. However, you can gain more SP from doing SSDs and leveling up your collection book.

Miscellaneous

Here you can see the amount of vbucks you have to spend on llamas. The number of friends you have online. The settings menu and various buttons that will let you:

See your daily rewards. You can also click this if the daily has been reset instead of logging out and logging back in to receive your daily reward.

Party Finder

See which of your friend's are available to play.

Privacy

Change the privacy of your party/lobby. Setting this to private and entering a mission means no one will be able to join unless you invite them (so if you want to solo, do just that).

Pressing this button will automatically place you in a map to complete your quest on.

Map

Zone Selection

You will be first met with the screen in which you can choose which zone you want to play in. Zones consist of: Stonewood, Plankerton, Canny, Twine, and whatever event is running.

Choosing A Zone Will Prompt You This Screen

Stormshield

This will show the stormshield of your current zone and what power its at. Its power can be increased by progressing through the main questline. You can also enter your stormshield at any time to place materials in your stormshield storage.

Research Points

This shows how many research points you currently have available to spend on the research tree and how many are waiting to be collected.

Timed Rewards

A max of 3 every 24 hours (I think each one has its timer). Missions with timed rewards offer rewards outside of the regular 2 rewards you get from successfully completing a mission.

Mutant Storms

Similar to timed rewards except these types of missions augment enemies and you with special abilities. You can do x amount every 24hrs, each with a separate timer. I say x because it has changed from patch to patch.

Mission Info

Clicking on a mission will give you its mission info. This will show you the rewards along with any timed/mutant storm rewards it offers. Missions that only show 1 reward (outside of the timed/mutant) means you get double of it.

Types of Missions

Overview of the missions plus some advanced tips that may help you.

Ride The Lightning

Van icon. 2 stages, each requiring 2 blu glo to start. You have to find a van and defend it from husks, simple enough.
Advanced:
This is mostly if you are speedfarming: Stage 1 does not require a roof, you just need to build a 1 story wall, or none if you have a good group. In my experience van has never had thick waves where you can get overwhelmed so with a good group you shouldn't even need walls. Stage 2 may spawn lobbers which will require you to build a roof if you cannot maintain aggro on them.

Repair the Shelter

To start the mission you will have to travel to the shelter to run diagnostics to spawn modules which you have to find. You need 8 to prompt the final attack. A minimum of 2 waves will be present as there are 8 modules requiring 1 minute each to install and the first wave arrives in ~5 mins (I'm going off memory here, so you might have more/less time in between waves than that, but one thing that is for certain is there will be a minimum of 2 waves) .
Advanced:
See-bot only shows 2 modules. Find 6 before activating. You can defend one and save it (you do not have to activate it right away) for when you do finally find 6 and activate it.

Retrieve the Data

You have to find a site where a balloon will land. You can force it to land at 8 minutes remaining left in the timer by shooting it, but you cannot shoot it till then. After it lands you will have to defend it for 8 minutes.
Advanced:
Balloon is 1x1, you can look up and see which corner it is in if you don't want to build a 2x2 defense.

Rescue the Survivors

Find survivors and rescue them. Some will ask you to find medkits, others will require you to deposit 2 blu glo, others will require you to defend them from attacking zombies, and some will require you to build a tower to activate an antennae.

Destroy the Encampments

Destroy encampments. Pretty Straightforward.

Evacuate the Shelter

As soon as you load in you will be forced to defend a shelter and kill x amount of enemies to end the attack. Failure to do so will result in... failure. After successfully defending you will get a timer for another attack in which you can build your defenses/farm.

Fight Category X Storm

You will have to find and place an atlas(es) and deposit blu glo(s) to start the mission. 8 minute defense upon activation.

Deliver the Bomb

Here you will have to find the launcher, armory, and a rift. Depositing 4 blu glo at A will result in a bomb spawning. This will give you tracks you can place to connect A and B. After A and B are connected you can start the escort the bomb portion of the mission in which you will have to escort the bomb from A and B. Upon reaching B you can activate the launcher to activate a defense stage.
Advanced:
Your defense only needs to be 1 story. No lobbers spawn on bombs, you don't need an (expensive) roof. There are only 3 possible mob comps: smasheblaster, mini husk, propane/flinger. The direction mobs come from do now change.

Build the Radar Grid

Follow a template to build a radar and then activate it.

Generic

Missions that require blu glo to activate will prompt an alert (if there is one) after depositing the blu glo. Alerts will tell you what element the enemies will be (if they have an element) and if the storm changes directions. Missions that don't require blu glo have other triggers for this. Retrieve the data is triggered upon finding the landing site. Repair the shelter is triggered upon running diagnostics. The 2nd stage of Deliver the Bomb is triggered when the bomb reaches B (the escort and the defense can have different elements so pay attention). Evacuate will tell you shortly after successfully defending.

Heroes

Stats

Another place where your F.O.R.T. is displayed, this time with your health and shields.

Bonuses

The active support and tactical bonuses.

Abilities

The abilities you primary hero has.

Primary

The hero you will play as in missions.

Squad Bonus

Placing heroes here will give you 20% of their health and shields (along with respective regen and healing modifier) and also their hero ability damage modifier. In addition slotting heroes with a support bonus in the left slot will give you said support bonus and slotting heroes with a tactical bonus on the right slot will give you said tactical bonus. Most (if not all heroes) will need to be star 2 to have their tactical active, the tactical bonus will not increase with further evolutions, whereas the support bonus may increase up to star 3.

See All Stats

Pressing see all stats will prompt you with a more detailed stat screen.

Mission Defenders

Defenders slotted here can be brought with you to any mission as long as you bring a defender pad to place.

Squads

Survivor Squads

Your survivor squads. In this menu you will be able to slot your survivors into specific squads. Slotting a survivor in a squad will result in the survivor contributing points towards whatever stat is listed for that squad. For example, if I were to (well first unlock the slot) slot a survivor in the last gadgeteer slot, my resistance would be increased. If you are starting out, most of the slots will be locked. You can unlock slots by purchasing nodes in the skill/research tree.

A Note on Organizing Your Squads and Managing Survivors

This section is an attempt to explain everything you'll need to know about your survivor squads.
Leads:
Your first priority is to have a survivor lead the job type. You will notice that in the previous image each squad has an icon above it. Match this icon with the proper lead to get a significant bonus in survivor value. If you do not have a matching lead, just slot the highest rarity lead you currently have.
Subordinates:
Rarity beats everything. If all you want is offense slot all your legendaries in offense. You'll start hearing things like, "oh if you have a mythic lead (the rarity over legendary, only applicable to survivor leads. There are also mythic heroes, but those are pretty much just legendary heroes that do not have any lower rarity versions of them) you'll get a penalty for not matching the personality." Guess what, doesn't matter because rarity wins out in the end. Higher rarities gain more points per level/evolution than lower rarities so while you may see an epic survivor beating a legendary in the beginning, once you start evolving the legendary will win. (and in that case epic beats legendary star 1 and star 2 but star 3 the legendary wins).
Alright so now you get that rarity>everything, let's talk about everything else. The next thing you will look for is personality. Leads have an icon beside their job which indicates their personality, survivors themselves have a personality and if the the lead and subordinate match you will get a bonus. The last thing is set bonuses. Instead of having a job icon as leads do subordinates have a bonus icon. Matching enough of these in the same squad will give you that said bonus. Do not go out of your way for this as these stats are additive. So if you see +5% ability damage, its actually just +5 tech.
Prioritizing Stats
Depending on who you ask you'll get differing answers. I for one am a firm believer in stat weights/mainstats. What I mean by this is not keeping an even stat spead (which means you'd level everything equally). While this is okay for your first 10 levels of each survivors, I highly suggest that's where you stop at even stat spread. It's ok there because you will pretty much one shot anything in stonewood and plank so leveling all your survivors to 10 will put you in a position to give you the option of whether you want to main tech or offense while also leveling your fort and res high enough where you'll be tanky enough to not get one shot when you reach Canny.
Once you reach Canny/leveled all your survivors to 10 you will want to start deciding on a mainstat. If you enjoy playing soldiers or doing damage with your weapons then go ahead and focus on offense. If you enjoy playing or having abilities as your main source of damage then focus on tech. At this point fort and res is only leveled so that trash mobs don't one shot your shield (resistance) and you don't get 1 shot by mist monsters (fortitude). I realize that leveling fortitude will give you more health than res will give you shields, but if you don't have your res leveled so that you can tank trash hits with them, a simple husk hit will one shot your shield and start chipping at your health. If you are still not quite sure what you want to main or want to be open to all playstyles then just keep offense and tech evenly leveled.
If I know what my mainstat is do I ignore all the other stats? You can, some people do, but as I suggested level fort and res up to those points mentioned. In addition, I'd suggest keeping your secondary stat 1 star below your mainstat. This is because most people main offense and I main tech so I want to get party tech from you. In all seriousness you can flat out ignore tech if offense is your mainstat, but if tech is your mainstat you'll have to level offense a bit since your abilities do have fairly long cooldowns (unless your a shuriken master hehe, but I'd still suggest leveling offense if you play her).
Why Do I Suggest Prioritizing Stats? I'll answer this in the FAQ near the end :)

F.O.R.T. Stats

How much of your stats are coming from survivors.

Bonuses

Your active set bonuses.

Defender Squads

Defenders here can be summoned to the respective stormshield using a defender pad.

Expedition Squads

Send heroes out on expeditions where they'll be gone for some time and return with some materials (assuming the expedition is successful).

Armory

Schematics, Heroes, Defenders, Survivors

Clicking on any of these will bring up all your schematics, heroes, defenders, survivors (whichever one you clicked). Where you can inspect/level/evolve/retire/recycle them. Note that retiring or recycling will delete that card in return for XP/maybe manuals. With that said, if you have something you really like and don't want to accidentally delete it you can inspect it and favorite it.
I'll cover some basics on how to decide whether a weapon is good in the FAQ

Transform

In this screen you will be able to combine cards together if you have transforms available. Just because a transform says a certain rarity does not mean it will go that. If you have a legendary hero transform but do not invest the required amount of points you will end up with a lower rarity. Do not make the mistake of getting an epic hero from your legendary hero transform as I've seen others post here about. With that said clicking on an available transform will prompt you with this screen https://i.imgur.com/uqlUOU3.png (And to the previous section, things you have favorited will not appear in this for you to accidentally delete as well). Note that on the right there is a bar, 16 points is not what is required for getting a legendary lead, that is what's required for an uncommon lead. You will have to fill multiple bars. You'll know you'll get the rarity you want when it says you'll get that rarity like so https://i.imgur.com/hL5KR6o.png

Collection Book

Instead of recycling and retiring your cards you can also slot them in the collection book. Like recycling and retiring, you will lose that card, so if you want to keep it, don't put it in here. With that being said, I would suggest staying away from this earlier on as it can screw your progression if you put everything in the book because you get less xp than you would recycling/retiring (I think) and, more importantly, do not get manuals/designs which are used for evolutions (and if you're free to play this is going to be one of your limiting factors). You can get some sweet rewards, but most advise not to go deep (don't see many f2p going past 50) unless you know you'll spend money.

Resources

Shows you your evolution mats, various xps, xp boosts, event tickets and people.

Skills

If you don't see Horde that's fine, nothings wrong. Horde is/was from an event that ran from October 5th to October 26th so if you are reading this past that you won't see it :)

Skill Tree

Skill tree is where you purchase nodes with your skill points. I would suggest rushing for research speed and survivor slots on these. If you play an ability based hero, then I would suggest rushing the evolution node for that class as well (which will 99.999999% be ninja, I would say 100% but someone will a write a very long argument on why they believe Grenadier is an ability based hero). As for other nodes, get the ones you want. I would suggest skipping on not-required defender nodes. As of the moment of writing this guide, you currently do not get enough SP to unlock all the nodes in the skill tree. Even if you do all the SSDs and go deep in the collection book.

Research

The Research Tree is where you purchase nodes with research points. I'd suggest first rushing survivor slots, then going all in to your mainstat.

Loot

Llamas

Mini Llama

Gained from SSDs, mission rewards. Can go silver and might rarely give you an epic. Good source of lower rarity cards for transforming to blues retire for manuals.

Upgrade Llama

Regular llama. 5% chance to go gold. 20% chance to go silver. 2% chance for it to not upgrade but still give you a legendary. From personal experience silvers can't give legendaries.*
*All stats are from my own data collection of post STS patch (aka the shuriken master nerf patch) in which the introduction of legendaries in non-upgraded llamas was added. This data is accurate to the current patch 1.7.1. with a sample size of $400 worth of llamas specifically after 1.7.1 release and an amount I will not disclose before that.

Event Llama

If there is an event going on, an event llama will be present. Event llamas typically contain an item of epic quality or better specific to that event.

Daily Llama

The Daily Llama. Refreshes everyday at 8 PM EST. I'd suggest saving your vbucks on Trolls/Supers as those are guaranteed to have legendaries.

Store

Upgrade your edition or buy vbucks

Quests

All your quests along with their rewards will be listed here. Do note that daily quests reward vbucks and can also be rerolled if you get a lest than ideal one (abandoning a daily quest will give you a new one).

FAQ

Why Do I Suggest Prioritizing Stats?

I suggest prioritizing stats because maintaining an even stat spread will put a strain on your manuals as well as making your powehour of farm stat lower. Increasing your fort and res does not increase your power, it will increase your homebase power, but it doesn't actually make you anymore powerful. As long as you can withstand multiple hits you will be fine. Prioritizing stats will let you better allocate your resources into things that will give you the most gain. However, this is just a suggestion, if you're set on increasing your homebase power as fast as possible or just want uniformity in your stats, then go ahead.

What class should I play?

What you find fun. That's it. Don't care about the meta (and if you do you're probably the type to finding what ever meta is fun so there you go). Forcing yourself to play a soldier or a ninja because 2x soldier 2x ninja is meta right now (in my humble opinion) if you don't enjoy it because doing so will just decrease your enjoyment of the game and your #1 goal is to enjoy it.

What hero should I play?

See above

I enjoy playing meta, what is it (for 1.7.1)?

With patch 1.7.1 its kind of in the air due to buffs across the board. I firmly believe its 2x soldier 2x ninja, but other will disagree and still say its 4 soldiers (but that's probably because most people still have offense as their mainstat, so new ninjas that have very little tech do not a significant amount of damage and lead to people thinking, oh ninjas are still bad). Now if you want me to get into specifics you can just read this from my post yesterday https://i.imgur.com/BsGW5Nq.png

What's a good weapon look like?

A good weapon will have an element. If a weapon has an element its most of the ways there. Other rolls that are good is dmg, headshot dmg, crit chance, crit damage (with crit chance or if used in conjunction with a hero in support that gives crit chance).

What's so good about an element roll?

When you counter elements, you get full damage. Note how I say full. You do not get bonus damage for countering. Now let's look at energy. Energy only does 67% of full damage to elementals, not +67%, just 67%. Let's look at no element. No element only does 50% of its damage to elementals. You jsut vut your damage in half against elements by doing that. So in short, that is why element rolls are good. Ideally you will have a weapon of each element but that may not always be the situation, like I just run 2 elements nature and water so I get full damage on fire and water enemies but only 67% to nature (element hitting the same element is the same as energy damage, element hitting weak element is 25%), which actually sucks because nature is my least favorite mob type since I play ninja,

Will I be screwed if I only have energy guns/no elements in late game?

You can get away with energy late game but you'll feel the difference if you ever get an elemental gun. Mobs will take more shots to kill = those smashers will take time to kill and you'll definitely feel it in your ammo reserves.

I have a question not listed here, but I'd like to have it answered.

Ask below, PM me, or join the reddit discord and ask in the questions-help channel and I will try to answer it.

Additional Tips

  1. Make friends. Really. I'm starting to add this section to most of my works now because its really big. The earlier you start the better. Friends make the game more fun, and, as you start progressing, lets you bypass the I can't matchmake into anything complaint most people complain about (which kills the game for some). Finding friends in fortnite will greatly improve your experience. You can find people in-game, in /fortnitelfg, in the reddit discord and the official discord found on the sidebar in the right, and on the lfg posts that are posted by automod in this subreddit.
  2. Feel free to use lower rarities in stonewood/plankerton if you don't have an idea of what you are doing. They won't cost a lot of evo mats to evolve, you'll get 90% of your xp back when you retire them, and they actually work in those zones. You do not need to be running legendary heroes and guns at this level and shouldn't worry too much about that. You'll get a legendary hero transform at the end of plank, one for each class in canny and another generic hero transform at the end of canny, you'll also get some more legendary class tranforms and generics in twine.
  3. Ask for help. If you need help, ask. If you have a question, ask. There's no shame in doing any of these and doing them will only help you get better. If anything in this guide was confusing for you, ask and I will try my best to better explain it to you. Although please do avoid: http://xyproblem.info/

Other Works

I used to write a lot of articles and guides on dfans and the nice thing about that is if you updated anything it'd go back up to the front page/would alert of an update, but to my knowledge fortnite has no platform for that. As such, I've decided to make a google doc for those interested in any of my works which will list any updates (for smaller things, if its something big like a patch I'll just make a whole new post) or new things I post. I manly write about ninjas, events and some beginner stuff (well this is the first one, but I plan on doing more). If any of that interests you the google doc can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/166TD_jYX4Jo9CvRWdGs_ZFI9QsgzVhGEQv-OrBJVb0M/edit?usp=sharing

Closing Words

I hope this helped you out in understanding the menus a bit more and if you have any feedback on what I could've done better, feel free to comment or PM me. I am always looking to improve my writing skills because I enjoy it and improving it will help me better communicate with you. Just from a guide I posted yesterday I know that I'll have to start adding an abbreviation section because not everyone might know them (although I think this post is free of that). As always, thanks for taking the time in giving this a read and have a great day :)
