So some background information on the subject. There is a game I play called CSGO and in the game there is virtual items that are worth real money. About 4 years ago my friend (who we shall call Mike) posted a video on YouTube with a promo code for a site that buys/sells these virtual items.
The video got 20k views and because people redeemed his code the site game him £2000 worth of credits that he could spend on the site (purchase virtual items that go into his inventory to use in-game). Mike used other sites to withdraw £1000 for himself and bought some virtual items with the rest. He bought a friend of ours, an in-game item which was worth around £200. This friend then gambled his item away on sites trying to double his money. Note Mike wasn't mad at this at all.
Mike gave me an item that was worth around £20 but I wasn't complaining, it was free! He wasn't doing this to be spiteful. It was an item I liked so he got it for me. Anyway, I have kept this item in my account and recently as I no longer play a lot I decided to cash out my inventory. Now the item that Mike gave me has increased in price over the years and is worth around £350. I found a site that would give me £310 for the item and I sold the rest of my inventory for another £400.
I told Mike that I had cashed out my inventory and he questioned me about his gift. I told him how much I had made from it and he said that he should get at least half of it, as I wouldn't have made that money if not for him. I said to him that I was using it to pay for my car insurance but I could tell he was annoyed. Nothing more was said on the matter but now I feel guilty for not giving him anything?
AITA for not giving him any money and keeping it for myself?
Note, we are both students and that is like just under a months wage for me. It really helps me by being able to pay off a good chunk of my car insurance with the money. Mike does not have big expenses compared to me so I felt that I needed the money more.

What you should do about this

I made this thread in the hopes that it could be used as a citation. There isn't much we can do to stop the manipulation, but we can spread this information so that people can at least become aware of it.
The previous generation became somewhat aware of the manipulation in the media. Imagine how effective it would be if few people knew about it? That is what is happening today. We are being advertised to and subjected to propaganda without being aware of it, which is very dangerous. The only reason why this type of propaganda works so well is because most people trust comments and posts with a lot of upvotes and likes. People trust that the information they are looking for will be at the top of threads or on the front page of a subreddit, oblivious to the fact that certain types of information may become buried in artificial downvotes or buried using a "forum slide." Not only that, but this is becoming automated. We must educate others about this problem before we are drowned out by bots.
Some of this stuff is automatically removed by Reddit, so you have to link to a thread that was manually approved in order to cite the information.
