It is not recommended to skip any of the games since a lot of the plot relies on knowledge from previous games. This might cause you to feel lost at times and even if you don't, knowing the events of the previous game gives you a better experience. That being said, the story of most of the games are still somewhat self-contained so even if some of the previous games will be spoiled and you might not understand some things, you will still enjoy any of the games that you play. It is up to you.

What are the differences between the original games, the kiwamis, and the remastered games?
Yakuza kiwami and kiwami 2 are remakes of the original yakuza 1 and 2 that feature updated graphics, gameplay and new content. Yakuza 3, 4 and 5 remastered are upscaled versions on the original games. The English version of the games was completely retranslated and some cut content from the original release where restored.
Which yakuza games have a dub?
Judgment and Yakuza: like a dragon have english dubbed voices as well as subtitles in French, German, Italian and Spanish. It is also highly likely that any future localisations will also have one. The original Yakuza 1 also has a dub but it's ummm... not the greatest thing.
What is Yakuza Like a Dragon? Is it a spinoff?
Yakuza LaD is the 8th mainline game and it is known as Ryu ga Gotoku 7 (Yakuza 7) in Japan. It's a soft-reboot of the series that focuses on a new protagonist and cast of charecters and unlike the previous games, this one is a turn-based JRPG.
Can I play Yakuza 7 without playing any of the other games?
Yes. Since it focuses on a new cast of charecters and story, you will understand it even if you haven't played any of the other games. However, it will contain story spoilers for a lot of the previous games, especially 5 and 6, so be warned if you're planning on playing those games in the future.
What are Ishin, black panther, Judgment, etc? Are they yakuza games? Are they canon?
Ryu ga gotoku kenzan and Ryu ga gotoku Ishin are Samurai spinoffs that take place during the Edo period. Kurohyo: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinsho (or Yakuza: black panther) and its sequel are spinoffs developed by Syn Sophia for the PSP. The story takes place in kamurocho but it's not related to the main games. Yakuza Dead Souls is a non-canon zombie spinoff that takes place after yakuza 4. It is the only localised game that is stuck on the ps3 :( Binary Domain is a third-person shooter that was made the same creators as yakuza. However, it's not a yakuza game. (Funnily enough though, this is the very first game that was developed under the name RGGStudio) Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise (or Hokuto ga gotoku) is a spinoff that's based on the FotNS manga. There's actually some debate about weather this is a yakuza game or not but we consider it one. Ryu ga Gotoku Online is a free-to-play Gacha RPG. The main story follows Ichiban as the protagonist. The game is not canon but it does have canon backstories for a lot of the series's characters. Judgment is a spinoff that follows the story of Takayuki Yagami, a Kamurocho detective. The story revolves around some Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance members but it's not directly related to the main series.

Why are some of the songs in the Japanese version different?
Due to licensing issues, a lot of the songs were removed from the English version of the games and were replaced by something else. INTRODUCTION (can be skipped) So a over a week ago i started thinking about how many Japanese expressions i was learning from wasting months spending so much time here watching streams despite not having learnt formally a bit of Japanese. I ended up gathering all the terms, inside jokes i read and heard a lot in the streams to make idk some starter pack meme or test to post lol. But then i thought that maybe it would be more useful to make it a more in deep dictionary. We have many new people coming from the EN side or translated clips and some of them are understandably thrown off or scared on watching something which is 99% in a language you don't know. This isn't the first time someone has tried to do this, there was a very complete post 3 months ago (https://www.reddit.com/Hololive/comments/icgxaq/a_guide_to_basic_written_hololive_japanese/) but from that time till now we have 3x more subscribers and this was more focused on written posts. Mine is different. The focus of this one is mostly two things: That you learn enough things to get a tiny tiny grasp on what's going on streams if there isn't enough translation and than you can get and join in in most inside jokes even if you aren't into the weaboo culture stuff. HOW TO USE Trying to study this is a pointless endeavour. Just look it over with CTRL+F (too lazy to order it alphabetically now) when you hear some term you want an explanation on or some inside term that you don't get fully. The first word is how the word is in romanji (latin alphabet) and then how is written in Japanese (normally hiragana) in case you want to use it. The dictionary divided into 3 sections for ease of use. This isn't a complete rundown of all the Hololive lingo because it would be waay too long and or a Japanese language course because it goes over my knowledge and as a language is way too nuanced and contextual to teach in one post. But i'm open for submissions and corrections from japanese speakers, i only did the work to research every term from others! Ohayo (おはよう): “Good morning”. Casual form of “Ohayo gozaimasu” (おはようございます)
Konnichiwa (こんにちは): “Good afternoon”
Konbanwa (こんばんは): “Good evening”
Oyasumi (おやすみ): “Good night”. Casual form of Oyasuminasai (おやすみなさい)
Hontouni? (本当に): “Really?”. Also it's used in the same way as "really x" in English to emphasize something.
Arigatou (ありがとう): “Thank you”. Casual form of Arigatou gozaimasu (ありがとうございます)
Omedetou! (おめでとう): Congratulations! Casual form of Omedetou gozaimasu (おめでとうございます)
Otsukaresama (お疲れ様): A good translation would be "Thank you for your hard work", more like a common generic expression to say goodbye to co-workers and friends after a work day or meeting. Tadaima (ただいま): A popular expression you tell someone when you come back home. Here they use it when after they had to leave the stream.
Okaeri (おかえり): What you reply when someone says "Tadaima".
Gommenasai (ごめんなさい): "I'm sorry". The short casual form "Gomen" (ごめん) is really common.
Sumimasen (すみません): Another polite way of saying "I'm sorry" but can be more versatile like the English "Excuse me"
Kudasai (下さい), Onegaishimasu (お願いします) : The two main ways to say "please" in Japanese. You will find them mostly at the end of a phrase to 'soften' the blow. Ex: "Yamete Kudasai" = "Please stop". Onegaishimasu is considered a bit more formal and polite but both are used often.
Yamete (やめて): One form of pleading someone to stop something, usually as part of やめてください (yamete kudasai) which is a bit more polite. Also you hear sometimes Yamero (やめろ) which is the more imperative serious form. As with many expressions in Japanese the more commanding and absolute expressions are used more often between men while the softer more polite forms are used more often between women. [That's one of the reasons japanese natives can usually detect if you have been taught mostly by a male/female teacher] In my experience watching streams they do use Yamero often though.
Yabai (やばい): Literally means "risky/dangerous" but it used in the meaning of "dangerously too much of something". It can be used both with positive or negative connotations, like something that is overwhelmingly well-done, a situation in a horror game that is so scary that makes you panic or a youtube thumbnail that is way too spicy to be allowed without banning the stream. It's a common casual term between young Japanese people, not something to be used in a formal context. As with other words ending in -ai the pronuntiation got slurred to -e resulting in “Yabe”. More recently some in chat are writing it like “Yab”.
Naruhodo (なるほど): "I see!", "I get it now!"
Wakatta (わかった): "I understood!" Sometimes they don't wakatta at all, though.
kuso (くそ): It means "shit" and it used in this context exactly the same way you would use it English, like "damn" or "fuck".
Ureshii (嬉しい): “I’m glad”/”That makes me happy”
Bikkurishita (びっくりした): “That surprised/scared me”
Mou ikkai (もう一回): “One more!”, as in “one more try”/”one last game” …
Oishii (美味しい) : “Delicious/Tasty”. Men may use more often Umai (うまい) which is considered more crude and slangy as a term. Umai can also mean “good [at doing something]/skilled at”
Ojisan (おじさん): Literally “Uncle” but frequently used as “middle-age man/mister”. In Hololive (at least) it’s implied this person is some kind of creepy pervert with younger girls when used as adjective for one of their members. Ex: “Watame Oji-san” = “Wata-oji”
Totemo (とても ) : “Very”. Really used generic word but native speakers may prefer more nuanced words depending on the context in the same way you don’t use “very” all the time.
Meccha (めっちゃ): An informal adverb used to do a superlative version of “very” like “supeextremely”. It comes from youth slang in the Kansai region that got popular with the general youth (probably thanks to TV comedians). Other popular words for this adverb are “chou” (チョー) and “sugoku” (すごく)
Mecha kucha (めっちゃくっちゃ): Something that is really: a mess, absurd, all over the place... It could be the origin of Meccha (めっちゃ)
Ikuzo! (行くぞ): “Let’s go!”/”Let’s do it!”
Saikou (最高): “The highest/maximum”
Minna (みんな): “Everyone”, as in everyone in the chat. Minna is the casual form of the word that get used among groups of friends. The polite version when you need a more formal address to an audience is Mina-san (皆さん)
Daijobu (大丈夫 ) : “It’s ok/fine”. You can hear them asking this in question form (something like “Is everything okay?/Are you okay?”) to the chat whenever something (audio, video, connection, missing something important in a game) seems wrong or the chat starts being too agitated.
Nani? (なに): "What?" Also the appropiate way to reply when you get to know you're already dead.
Doko? (どこ?) : “Where?”
Sasuga (さすが ): “As expected of...” In the overseas chat it’s used both as praise of someone’s abilities (as in “You’re great as playing this game (as we all knew already!)” so you’re impressed even knowing their previous reputation) or to mock ironically flaws in character (affectionally). In native Japanese I’m not so sure if this second meaning it’s used as much but Sasuga itself is pretty more nuanced as an expression.
Kawaii (かわいい): “Cute”
Kowai (こわい): “Scary”
Kakkoii (かっこいい): “Cool”
Itai (痛い) : Literally "Painful, hurt" but used as an onomatopoeia of "Ouch!"
Uta (歌): “Song”. A stream dedicated to singing is called "utawaku" (歌枠)
Ganbatte! (がんばって): “You can do it!”, a way to root/cheer for the success of someone
Chotto matte (ちょっと待って): "Wait a minute/ a moment". Chotto is an small amount(ちょっと) and Matte (まって) is "to wait"
Urusai (うるさい): Literally "[Too] Noisy/Loud", in practice it means "Shut up!"
Senpai ( 先輩): Your senior. In Japanese and other Asian cultures this is really important because respecting, serving and being loyal to your seniors (both elders and work/school seniors) is still a fundamental part of the social etiquette. Nowadays though it has been losing some relevance over a westernized meritocratic system so it has opened itself to a more superficial relationship in some places. You will see Kiryu Coco talk about “Paisen” (ぱいせん) which how you call your senpais when you’re really close together.
Kouhai (後輩): Your Junior. In Asiatic cultures the Senpais also have some duties over treating their kouhai according to the social etiquette which includes things like taking care of them as emotional support of to take them under their wings to show them all the ropes of the job.
Sensei (先生): "Teacheprofessor"
Tensai (天才): "Genius". Or at least they claim to be for comical effect.
Sugoi (すごい): Almost always you’ll hear it, it means “Awesome!” or “Impressive!” but hilariously enough it can mean the exact opposite too: “Horrible, Awful”. This is because it’s nuanced in the same way that “Awesome” is: something so overwhelmingly impressive that causes awe, good or bad.
Tanoshii(楽しい): “Fun”, “Pleasant”
Chigau (違う) : “Wrong”, “different”
Tadashi (正しい): “Correct”, “right”
Kimoi (キモイ): Slang for "Gross/creepy/disgusting", literally "bad feeling".
Kimochi (きもち): "feeling". Its most known variation, for reasons, is kimochii which means "good feeling" which includes the particle -ii to mean "good".
Baka (ばか): "Stupid/Fool/Idiot". The king of the swearwords. Shiranui Flare, Tsunomaki Watame and Shirakami Fubuki are self-named as the "Bakatare [stupid, idiotic] trio" due to their antics while playing games in collabs
Daisuki (大好き): "I like you a lot" with suki (好き) meaning "i like you"
Aishiteru (愛している) : "I love you" but in real life it's like a really really strong "i love you". Stories tell that even some married couples doubt on using this, so it's more rare to use in Japan than in overseas. Shouldn't have to remind everyone, but for both this and "daisuki" don't take them too seriously when they use them in streams, they like to play with them hyperbolically or to make a comedy bit.
Muzukashii (むずかしい): "Difficult/Hard". For example Haachama wrote once "English muzukashi OMG"
Hazukashii (はずかしい): "Embarrased/shy"
Mite! (見て！): "Look!"
Yokatta (よかった): Can be used as the past form of being good (so "It was good") but you're going to hear it with the meaning of "I'm glad to hear that", "What a relief [to know that now]"
Are? (あれ?): "Huh?"
Yatta! (ヤッタ!): "I did it, yay!"
Yoroshiku (よろしく): You hear it mostly is the form of Yoroshiku onegaishimasu (よろしくおねがいします) A natural translation would be like "Please treat me well/be kind to me" and it's a custom you say whenever you introduce yourself to other people to express your hope to start with a good relationship. In formal business japanese this phrase is used really really often not only in introductions but after asking for favors.
Japanese Internet and popular culture expressions:
Gachi Koi (ガチ恋): An expression from idol culture. Literally means "serious love" but a better translation would probably be "super obsessive fan" as you can guess from the first translation. With time the expression has soften and is used many times in a exaggerated/joking context. I think it's used more often by male fans.
Gap Moe: Moe is used very often in anime/otaky culture and is some specifics aspects of a character that makes them cute and really, deeply attractive to you (Althrough the word has to a surprinsingly complex meaning with some nuances and has expanded to general hobbies). Gap here means the difference between different aspects of the personality of someone. So putting both together, it means the stark contrast of different personalities of someone that makes them really attractive to you. For example, the anime "yandere" archetype of a sweet girl that is a psychopath when she get jealous, or a clumsy character that is a pro at some game.
Seiso (清楚): Literally means "pure, wholesome, uncorrupted (of knowing sexual and other adult stuff)" and it refers to some archetype of idols that used to be the ideal expected from of them. Nowadays many fans still take this seriously but it's more often a running joke. For example in Hololive is common for a streamer to say something perverted and when the chat points it out them saying they aren't perverts but seiso idols. If you ask me, modern "seiso" idols are a bit more more about attitude (agency) than purity, a way they chose to act after they look at the abyss (of degenerancy) rather than being some virginal person. In that meaning you can actually be both seiso and degenerate at different times.
wwwwwwwww : In Japanese "warai" means "to laugh".. Writing a w is faster than that, specially in a western keyboard and that's how it came to be in online culture. So it's their way to say "hahahaha". You can see it as a final "w" at the end of many messages if you were confused before. I guess there it means more like "lol".
Kusa, Big 草 : 草 (kusa) is a kanji for grass. As the story goes (that has been explained sooo many times in this subreddit lol) for japanese users the "wwwww" look like blades of grass, hence 草 ended up as a short hand for that so it means something like lol/lmao. It's something you always see in Hololive JP streams' chats. Big 草 is a beautiful example of cross-cultural interactions, like japanglish.
KSZK (くそざこ): Acronym of “kuso zako”. Literally “shitty noob”. Someone who does something pathetically really amateur (unprofessional). For example, oversleeping a scheduled stream or having their stream disconnected due to shitty internet connection. Coco has a recurring segment of this in Asacoco but please don’t take it too seriously, it’s mostly a way to poke fun at her work pals. The majority of the audience are more amused by these problems than angry.
Kaigai niki (海外ニキ): Comes from “Kaigai aniki”, literally “overseas [elder] brothers” = "overseas bros". It means the worldwide community of fans outside of Japan. The japanese fanbase is the "nihon-niki". For the female fanbase the word is "neki" and for the specific fanbase of both men and women they use both like "nekiniki/nikineki"
RTA: Literally means “Real Time Attack” and is what the Japanese use to talk about speedruns.
Haishin (配信): “Stream/Broadcast”. Also used, “Housou” (放送)
888888: Used as sort of onomatopoeia of clapping. Also, it’s a pun between “Pachi”, which means clapping and “Hachi”, which means 8.
Batsu game (罰ゲーム): A punishment you do for losing to someone or failing to do something. If you have watched Japanese variety TV before you will know this is almost its own genre of entertainment. For Vtubers, it’s mostly just playing horror games or eating spicy food.
Taikyuu (耐久): “Endurance”. In this context it’s used to talk about “endurance streams” which are stream that won’t end until some (hard) goal/milestone gets completed like beating a game in one go or winning an online match of some battle royale game.
Zatsudan (雑談): "Free chat/Idle chat". What you know as "Just chatting" if you come from Twitch culture. Exactly what it says in the tin, the streamer talks about things that has happened to them or plan to happen and interact for a bit with the chat. A stream with zatsudan is a zatsudanwaku (雑談枠).
Doki Doki (ドキドキ): Onomatopoeia of a beating heart. So you can guess it get used to emphasize nerve-wracking situations or romantic interactions in a goofy way.
Guru guru (ぐるぐる): A sound of something that goes around in circles. They use this to talk about the emoji for loading/buffering in a stream.
Hololive-related expressions and inside jokes:
Mama, papa: That's "mom" and "dad" in Spanish, in case you didn't know. They aren't talking about their biological fathers but instead the ones who designed their character Live2D avatar and the person who rigged the animations. Vtubers have a really grateful, supportive relation with the artists that made them come to life. Other words are used for this like mamma/mammy/mamman or the japanese equivalents hahaue (母上) / chichiue (父上).
FAQ: A way to pronounce "fuck you" (the q sounds similar). When you are so elite as Sakura Miko, you discover it's a really flexible word to react, greet each other, confess your love, apologize...
10Q: "Thank you."
Yubi Yubi: One catchphrase of many of our doggo Inugami Korone. Korone has a fascination with the criminal underworld customs and vocabulary (In fact, she used to have a section in Asacoco about this very thing). Yubi means finger and in yakuza (Japanese mafia) culture it is the one thing you get chopped off when you commit a grave mistake. In Korone's first stream this started as a joke she found funny. The gag evolved into her being an insecure doggo making a collection that wants to take your fingers as a safe deposit to ensure you stay watching all the stream (which can be really long) before her giving your fingers back. The fate of your fingers is decided in the sketch at the end of most streams which is some sort of improvised and hilarious bizarre short story to see if you get them back. Spoiler: You usually get them back but not in the best state. And then you explode and die for some reason.
Nyahello: The standard greeting of elite shrine maiden Sakura Miko. Also written sometimes as "nyahallo". A reference to the greeting "Yahallo!" from Oregairu (Abbreviation of the name of light novel/manga/anime "Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru", known in English as "My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected") character Yui Yuigahama. This is because Tanaka Yuuichi was both the character designer of Oregairu and Miko herself originally (but not currently).
Peko Peko Peko: A catchphrase of mischievous rabbit Usada Pekora. In anime some characters have some finish particles to their phrases like "-desu" or "-aru" that never happens in real life but for Japanese natives it makes them sound cuter. For Pekora the particle is "-peko". In her lore (please don't take it seriously) this is because she comes from the country of Pekoland. There they speak Pekolandish in which somehow every word is "peko". Pekora uses this expression often to laugh before doing some mischievous plan or to mock them after they lose to her. Sometimes wrote with arrows [PE↗️ KO↘️ PE↗️ KO↘️ PE↗️ KO↘️ PE ↗️ KO↘️] to represent the very characteristic changes of pitch she does while saying it. Once you hear it you will never forget it.
Asacoco: Really early morning show (in JST) hosted by dragon Kiryu Coco in her channel 3 days per week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays). In the show Coco talks about Hololive related news from announcements or milestones to funny moments of the previous days. Asacoco is also the name of some undescribed ficticious drug Coco sells in many forms in ads during the show. It's implicit the very same show somehow is the drug too so when you don't watch it, you feel withdrawal symptoms if you don’t get more doses.
Tee Tee (ていてい/てぇてぇ): It's used to describe pure, cute, heartwarming, affectionate moments between 2 or more vtubers. It’s an internet variation of toutoi (尊い) which means “precious”.
Otsu- (korone, nomaki…): In Japanese a common way to say goodbye/hello in the job or other contexts is お疲れ様 (otsukaresama, a crude translation is "Thanks for your hard work, you must be tired") In Hololive [and other vtubers] many make it cutesy by changing -karesama for their name or some expression to say goodbye to the audience and for the audience to say goodbye to them. There's too many to put here but for example Inugami Korone says "Otsukorone", Tsunomaki Watame says "Otsunomaki", Pekora says "Ostupeko", Tokoyami Towa says "Otsuyappi"... Some other do use completely different expressions, check out Hololive fan wikis for that.
Gaming onion: The head of Minato Aqua's first Live2D model looks like a purple onion. Aqua is also a really good hard-working gamer. Both together are a affectionate way to poke fun at her. Recently, she complained after watching a clip of Hololive EN Amelia Watson mentioning her as a "certain vegetable senpai"; which could lead in the future to the nickname "yasai senpai" as yasai means vegetable in japanese and it has some rhythm to it.
Crazy comedian rabbit: A way for overseas fans to refer jokingly to Usada Pekora because of her comedy hijinks and blessed comedic timing. Also how they reply when Pekora says she's an idol. Hey, she can still be your favorite crazy comedian rabbit idol!
Akipella: A portmanteau of Aki + a capella due to the habit of accidentally muting the BGM of Aki Rosenthal during her singing streams. Her fans are pretty creative about adding Aki- to some other words.
HAACHAMA CHAMA~!: Catchy greeting of Haachama (aka Akai Haato). Haachama used to be like some alter personality of Haato which is crazier and almost supernatural but recently Akai Haato is dead because Haachama killed her (at least that’s what she says). In her videos she uses this greeting very very often, sometimes in the middle of songs she sings in some sort of deranged brainwashing chant way to get her viewers insane and to subscribe to her. In my personal experience, it works.
Kitsuneko (キツネコ). In Japanese "kitsune" is "fox" and neko is "cat". This portmanteau means "foxcat". Our friend and wholesome meme queen Shirakami Fubuki is based on an original mythological arctic fox. Her name in fact can be read as "White god Blizzard" (foxes are a common trope in JP mythology). The thing is that the audience doesn't always agree, they think she's cat. She plays into it by saying so many times that "she isn't a cat but a fox" or doing random cat noises. So her public thinks now maybe she has been a kitsuneko all along.
TMT: Acronym for “Towa Maji Tenshi” which means “Towa is really an Angel”. Tokoyami Towa tries really hard to show she’s a true evil demon but her continuous acts of kindness and inability to do evil things make her fans think otherwise. This acronym usually gets spammed whenever Towa appears or get mentioned on a stream.
PPTenshi: Hololive resident angel Amane Kanata did her debut livestream using Powerpoint (PPT). “Tenshi” means “angel”. Over time the meaning became a backcronym because there are many words that could fit like “Perfect Pitch”,”Poor Precious”, “Pure Power”…
Watamelon: Fluffy sheep Tsunomaki Watame + watermelon = Watamelon. She was made aware of this pun and she started wearing a watermelon helmet for a few streams and even released a (silly) mini song about having a “watamelon head”. Other related puns: “Watamelody”, “sheep-posting”, ”membersheep”.
Haato Basic: Overseas nickname for Akai Haato (Haachama) due to her cooking streams and videos being comparably as cursed as comedy youtuber HowToBasic.
Piki Piki Piiman: Cutey expression for someone who is being pissed off/salty/frustrated at some task, like at a videogame. Piiman means “green pepper”. That’s why Korone has a pepper in her coffee during her streams.
スーパーチャットタイム : In romanji it's "suppa chatto time". The other show Kiryu Coco does is a weekly meme review of this very subreddit with Hololive guests, which is a fun way of bridging the language gap between both communities and to make the Hololivers bond a bit more with their overseas fanbases since Japan has a totally different meme culture and you never know how they would react (althrough you end up discovering meme humor is universal). Anyways, in the show Coco translates the memes to Japanese and doesn't like when someone adds a shitty google-translate Japanese translation or random japanglish but the guests usually love this kind of awkward dorky japanese. One of the shitty japanese that stuck was this one and is used as some sort of call by viewers to send waves of donations.

Shuba Shuba Shuba: Quirky catchphrase of Oozora Subaru when she’s excited, it somehow sounds like a duck. Subaru originally doesn’t have anything to do with ducks but the meme caught up when she did an unintentional Donald Duck imitation in an ASMR stream (really) and from there she likes to use duck drawings in her streams. She has acknowledged that she took inspiration of “Peko Peko Peko” when looking for a catchphrase.
Ahoy~! : Greeting of pirate captain [cosplayer] Houshou Marine and by extension chat spam whenever something related to pirates appear in a stream.
Kensetsu (建設): “Construction” as in “Construction company”. This is a normal word but I didn’t know where to put it lol. In Hololive’s Minecraft server they love their big building/art/automation projects, with their main builders having their own made-up construction company and “employees” sometimes helping out. The ones building the most for now are Aqua, Pekora, Haachama and Subaru.
AKUKIN: Alter ego of Minato Aqua which is an affectionate parody of really popular Japanese Youtuber HikakinTV and comes with the meme sunglasses. Currently the CEO of AKUKIN Kensetsu.
[]-chou (-長) [Kaichou, Senchou, Danchou....]: The relevant meaning of the root kanji chou 長 for this definition is "chief/head/leader" and is used to mark many profession are the boss of others. In Hololive, this trend caught like wildfire and now many members use this as some sort of nickname.

There are swords and guns in this game, Just like Gintama! Okita Souji, Hijikata Toushizou and many other historical figures are featuring in this game, same as Gintama! Gintoki learns new abilities after each fight(THATS RAD) also, he has godlike stamina, same as Kazuma Kiryu, something that you call 1 man army. Sakata Gintoki is the main protagonist of Gintama; he fights using a Bokuto(Wooden Katana). After playing 0, I was hyped for the next big game in the series. I skipped Kiwami 1 after reading about the combat changes with boss fights. There were mixed messages about Kiwami 2 so I gave it a shot. It wasn't so much that it turned out bad as it felt like a stepdown from 0.
Significantly reduced quantity of heat actions.
That was one of the defining features in 0 for me. So to see that a lot of them were based on coop assists from sidequests that were region dependent and that the others were the same animation while in heat, just drawn out, was utterly disappointing.
Bosses get i-frames.
I'm personally not a fan of i-frames to begin with but I can respect it as a skill based mechanic since it's risk/reward based. But having a boss "dodge" an attack when it visually connects just makes for a frustrating and unsatisfying experience.
Targetting can be wonky. Unless in very close distance, occasionally Kiryu will swing in a completely random direction. Part of this is probably related to Dragon Engine kinks not being worked out yet. I never had this issue with 0.
Limited to 1.5 styles. I know that's how the Yakuza series originally was. But I feel like 0 took a step forward in those regards, even if the styles were somewhat copied from other characters. My issue with extreme heat mode is that it requires a full heat gauge limiting it's accessibility. Having to go to a separate menu to fill the heat gauge just makes for a cumbersome experience.
The plot is also nowhere near the level of 0 either. I can't find any reason to care for any of the cast, save Kiryu. They just feel so contrived. The writing quality for the side quests, for whatever reason, is just as good though. Overall, it's not a bad game by any means. Just feels like a significant step down from 0. Edit: A lot of people seem to be hung up on me skipping the order of playthrough. I have no intention of playing through the actual release order because the combat and graphics just aren't for me. I did read through the wiki and saw some vids on the series so I'm not going in Kiwami 2 blind. Regardless, the story just isn't for me. There were segments that I found interesting but as a whole I found it a slog.

Streets of Kamurocho, a short mashup between Streets of Rage and Yakuza, has been released for a limited time for free on steam! It will no longer be available after 10am PST / 6PM BST October 19th. Congratulations guys, we've evolved past the need for hands! In all seriousness, hands have (has) been eliminated! I honestly forgot this song existed before now, and I genuinely do not remember hearing it before? But, I actually like it a lot listening to it, so I'm confused as to why it escapes my memory. Kuroda-san definitely makes all of his songs stunners. And for Haruka, GET to the TOP has been eliminated! Not a huge fan, again, because I'm not really a fan of Haruka's songs, BUT. This song will almost certainly, have its vengeance, in the other side of the poll. Mark my words. Many underestimate the strength of Dead Souls. Picked up Yakuza 0 back in Jan 2020, just beat 5. Loved the ride so far! Some thoughts (walls of text, spoilers)
Obviously, I plan on playing 6 and 7 eventually. I did all the side content for 0 and K2, not so much for K1/3/4/5 (I might go back for some of those). I have a habit of reading wikis and such, so I spoiled myself on some pretty big twists. I'm okay with that, though - I'm more about seeing how those things are executed in the literary/film-making sense rather than wanting to be wowed or stunned by what happens. So if you haven't played any of the games, there's going to be a lot of spoilers in this post. Stop and close this if you don't want that. Seriously. Like, right now. General/multi-game stuff:
The progression system from 3 was by far the most linear and least interesting. 5's was very similar, so it also sucked. As far as progression/upgrade systems go, I would rate it 0 > K2 > 4 > K1 > the others. 0 is the best largely because of how the money multipliers incentivize you to do better in fights (feeding into its excellent combat), while the K2/6 system heavily incentivizes you to explore the city and do shit, and 4's incredible flexibility in buying upgrades is very nice.
Seeing the polish and changes accumulate from 3 to 4 to 5 was interesting, especially seeing the things that stuck, and the things that were repurposed. It also made certain aspects of other games easier to appreciate, like sprinting, the Endless Stomach perk (or K2's digestion system), and not wasting 30 seconds on animations whenever you pick up a locker key or phone card.
Pedestrians feel weird until 0. I'm not sure how to describe it, but something about them becomes noticeably different from 0 onward. The same is true of street encounter detection/intros, but at least with those, I could see how they changed over time.
FUCK sprint/chase segments, my god. So stupid.
Tiger Drop is fucking sick. Like, legit one of the best-designed and coolest moves in brawlers/hack-and-slash/action games. It seems to be the most ridiculous in K1 and 5. Every time I fought someone with Tiger Drop, though, it was terrifying! Especially in 5 when they do it without me attacking and it's unblockable!!!
Akiyama is fucking fantastic. He doesn't appear to have returned in 7, but I hope they keep him around for future Yakuza games. I actually want to hear what he would sound like in a dub - Koichi Yamadera is also the voice of Spike from Cowboy Bebop and Beerus from Dragon Ball, in case you want ideas.
Saejima is a good addition. I don't find him quite as interesting as Kiryu/Majima/Akiyama, though.
As interesting as Tanimura and Shinada were mechanically, and as contrasts to the other protagonists, I don't feel like they were THAT crucial to their respective games. As much as I'd like to see them again, I can kinda see why they've effectively been retired.
Kiryu and Majima are honestly two of the best fictional characters I've ever seen, in any medium. Their breadth, depth, flaws, and multiple dimensions are really fucking impressive. My only issue is that 0 is muddling/ret-conning some of 4 and 5 when it comes to Majima. Well, that, and...
Man, Yakuza really loves weirdly specific clichés. Every time some important character dies or is reported to be dead, I doubt it. I'm side-eyeing every fucking secondary character, because it feels like one of them is always the mole or the mastermind. And every time a fight finishes, I'm waiting for someone to pull out a gun. Like, after the third time some dude Kiryu kicked the shit out of gets up and pulls out a gun, shouldn't he take the fucking hint and at LEAST hit them three more times before walking away?
While we're here, Daigo really REALLY needs to overhaul his hiring practices. Every other year the Clan almost falls apart in a civil war if not for the intervention of Kiryu and his pals, all because some new guy was a shithead the whole time! C'mon dude, you gotta be pickier with promotions!
For 3 specifically:
Aged the worst in terms of some relatively minor things like animations, going into and out of street fights, some aspects of the presentation (especially for minigames/side-quests like the Hostess Maker), not being able to order more than one item in restaurants, etc.
It felt strange to see Kiryu become so attached to the Ryudo Family in one year. I feel like his reaction to Rikiya's death was stronger than to that of Shinji, or even Yumi. And I definitely expected Joji to get shot at some point, but that never happened...also, Joji's "English" was unintentionally hilarious.
I feel like if Mine were written in 2020 instead of 2009, he would likely be gay/bi. But Yakuza (and a lot of Japanese media, really) is already borderline homo-romantic (not quite the same as homosexual, BTW), so I guess that wouldn't actually be a significant change outside of representation.
For 4 in particular:
That was one of the dumbest twists I think I've ever seen. They didn't even do us the decency of explaining HOW they put those rubber bullets in Saejima's guns! Did they put that shit in the ammo boxes Majima got alongside the guns or something? smh
Seeing some minor characters from previous Yakuza games turn up was a trip. The fucking gang leader from Yakuza 1 running a chop shop?! Fake Kiryu came back?!
Subverting "guy who got his ass kicked pulls out a gun and kills someone" with the wad of bills was a very nice touch.
I loveLOVE what they did with Hamazaki. I got so hype when I realized that it was Kiryu's faith in him that led to Hamazaki reciprocating Saejima's faith in him, a 1-2 punch of seemingly unwarranted trust. Such a fantastic execution of redemption - Haruka's reaction to him makes it even better, because turning over a new leaf doesn't mean any trust is deserved. Instead, he fully accepts this, and lets his actions earn it. Weird that this is in the same game as "rubber bullets".
For 5 in particular:
Half the goons wearing face masks is kinda amusing considering current events. I know it's a thing in Eastern Asia, but seriously! Even the muggers randomly picking fights care enough about the common good to wear masks!
Some of the boss fights are very "wait we need a boss fight, eh just make up something". Shinada vs Baba really sticks out as an example of this. The Aizawa twist also feels a little bit like this.
This might be cultural dissonance or something, but Park feels like a shitty parent selfishly trying to shove their kid into sports/acting/etc to vicariously live out their failed dreams, without regard for what the kid actually wants. It feels like a huge contrivance that someone didn't call her out on this, or that Haruka didn't express more reservations up-front about the whole idea. Like, someone saying your dad has to fuck off for the whole thing to work should be an instant non-starter!
Not to mention the whole thing where Haruka was the bastard child of a dead politician who was in cahoots with the yakuza and was laundering their money to fund secret prisons! And her mother was associated with the yakuza, too! Seriously: Yumi grew up in an orphanage run by yakuza, she worked in a bar frequented by yakuza, her two best friends grew up to be major yakuza figures...if they thought Kiryu being ex-yakuza was going to cause problems, an idol career should NEVER have been viable for Haruka at all! Nice research, you dumb bitch.

I'll probably pre-order 7 and maybe put 6 on the backburner, since I'm obviously aware of the most important part of 6's impact on the series going forward, and what I hear suggests 6 is a less refined version of K2 gameplay-wise. TL;DR: DM brought in an outsider to play a ridiculously strong enemy PC (CR 25+) to fight against a party of 5 level 1-3. A long drawn out impossible TPK ensued, followed by rape threats killing the already faltering campaign. In my 11 years of playing D&D I’ve never had to quit a game before (Usually I’m the DM but still) let alone, by the nature of this group, have had to ask a DM to step down. That all changed tonight. Our game consists of a group of college friends that have continued to play online together past graduation. We take turns DMing so the campaigns are usually short. The current DM wanted to spice things up with some homebrew. I’m all for some homebrew but it became suddenly apparent that this would not be a standard game of 5e as our group is used to. He had us make characters using homebrew classes from *shudder* D&D Wiki. We were supposed to pick fun but not OP classes, however, he himself would determine what would and wouldn't be considered “OP” so if he didn't like your class he’d balance nerf it to high hell through homebrewing the homebrew. What could go wrong right? Our party consisted of a Time Wizard, Weeb, Yakuza Brawler, Jojo Stand User, and I’m a Dragon Rider. All of which wasn't as crazy as they sound, and had most of their cool abilities nerfed. The whole system he was using was kind of odd. Instead of milestone leveling like we usually did, he gave out XP, but when you had enough XP you had to use a ring dropped by high CR monsters to level up and roll a dice for an unknown effect on your character. Sounds cool on paper except the rings were dropped very rarely so we were seldomly all on the same level and when we rolled the chance dice it would almost always be a negative effect like a permanent -2 to an ability score. He also cast himself as some sort of omniscient god that would constantly belittle and punish our party if we stepped out of line of his “grand plan”, but you know what? I can look past that. The straw that broke the camel's back was our session tonight where he let one of his friends randomly join the game as an enemy PC unannounced. He appeared as THE DOOM Guy. Like they played DOOM music way too loud and everything. The combat opens with DOOM Guy pulling us into some sort of illusionary plane, which we all failed even though one of the players rolled two nat 20s. He splits the party into two “groups”, one “group” was the weeb, and the other was everyone else. In the weeb’s illusionary plane his waifu is tied up on a bed and DOOM Guy threatens to rape her, going into too much detail of what he’d do and this is something we’ve never allowed in our games. The weeb tries to fight him but the DOOM guy dodges a 19 against AC and hits the weeb with a +22 to hit for 27 dmg which downs the level 2 weeb instantly. In the other illusionary plane, DOOM Guy starts one-shotting our party while having too high of an AC and saving throws to fight back. Eventually, the last two of us that are left try to grab party and run. Turns out you can't run out of the illusionary space, and you can't save to escape either. The other party member gets one hit by DOOM Guy's 60 FOOT CONE SHOTGUN!?! And only I am left flying over the battlefield out of range with my nerfed dragon, unable to do damage with my bow or dragon due to his AC being too high. I eventually figure enough is enough and just charge into him to die in one hit to just end it. DM then uses the tried and true: “Then you all wake up fine in some other room” to a silent chatroom… and then he just ends the session like we’re all going to be chomping at the bit to see what happens next week! All the players got together after it was over and decided that we need to talk to the DM about stepping down. I hope it all goes well because I’d like to keep this group together but man I can't think of a better way to piss off your players than what he and his friend pulled. Gran Turismo Series - Stability issues, crashes during races. You can play the games to a certain extent though.
infamous Series - Has graphic problems, performance seems fine but im not sure if it can be finished last I heard it had a game breaking bug in a specific mission.
littlebigplanet Series - LBP 1 is playable while LBP 2/3 are still ingame.
Uncharted Series - The first one just needs some more performance and can be playable, if you have an i9 9900 then its playable, not sure on the other two games.

Goro Majima: Character discussion and the significance of his tattoo
Get ready for a massive fucking wall of text built with my feels. I just finished Yakuza 0--so far, the only Yakuza game I've played--and promptly spoiled myself on the rest of Goro Majima's anti-hero arc throughout the series due to a combination of a quarantine situation and my unhealthy obsession with his lore, which I'm purging by writing this. While somewhat inconsistently written over the years, his transformation between Y0 and Y1/Kiwami 1 and ensuing characterization carries undiscussed literary depth within the context of details like his tattoo. It goes without saying that spoilers follow in the discussion, though I've blacked out some character reveals or deaths in the main post. Biography/Character Development As series fans are aware, at some point between the end of Yakuza 0 (1988) and the start of the first Yakuza game/Yakuza Kiwami (1995/2005), our favorite one-eyed boi's personality does a 180 from a calm, collected gentleman to the Joker counterpart to Kiryu's Batman--at least, from the point of view of someone who started with Yakuza 0. Hell, Mark Hamill even voiced him in the English dub. Fan discussion varies on whether Majima's crazy side (shown in most of the series and around the other yakuza post-Y0, and particularly in Kiwami 1) is an exaggerated defense mechanism for him to operate efficiently in the yakuza underworld, if his sane side (shown around civilians and occasionally Kiryu/Saejima, particularly in Y0 when he's imprisoned in his 'gilded cage' in Sotenbori) is a repressed/depressed act, or if both represent him accurately (à la Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde) and he's not acting. The only consistencies in his character seem to be his loyalty and his respect for people who display courage, honor, and independence. Out-of-universe, he debuted as an insane character who was later given backstory and depth; in-universe/in-game, chronologically, his seemingly gentle nature gives way to a maniac with touches of sanity. It is worth noting that the lead English translator for the game, Scott Strichart, has said that Majima "makes a conscious choice to... let loose," though this is never alluded to in-game. To recount the rest of Majima's history: 1985 - We are unaware of how he acted pre-Yakuza 0, but know that he endured a year of isolated torture for insubordination to his superiors out of concern for his oath brother. 1988 - Yakuza 0 takes place. Even in Y0, Majima acts a little crazy at times in karaoke and in his Breaker Style, more so than Kiryu would. Additionally, during Y0, we see the loss of people he admires or who died to defend him, including Lee, Awano, Sagawa, and especially Nishitani--all of who contribute to his later personality. His wild persona is partially inspired by how he's treated while he's acting like a gentleman, including him being used by Sagawa and Shimano throughout the game--hence the 'dog' part of his 'mad dog' title--and giving up Makoto so she can have a happy life, both of which could have their own textposts. 1992 - As revealed in Yakuza 5 in 2012 anecdotally by his pop idol/superstar ex-wife Mirei Park: sometime between Y0 and Y1/Kiwami 1, he goes through an ill-fated marriage at 28 with a then-18-year-old, hits her after finding out she aborted their child without telling him, and divorces her in part to save her career. 2005 - The original Yakuza game/Kiwami 1 takes place. Majima stalks Kiryu every chance he gets. 2006 - After the events of Kiwami 2, Majima also temporarily leaves the yakuza to begin a construction company--a venture that recalls his business acumen and many dualities (civilian/criminal, destruction/construction, and the ultimate duality of the Yakuza series itself: strategic management minigame set against a lighthearted story/cartoonishly violent beat-em-up set against a serious story). (Majima continues to show up in future Yakuza games, but I haven't seen any character development easter eggs in his reactions to major game events like his oath brother Saejima being released from prison. Every biographer is biased, though--I believe I've underplayed Saejima's role in Majima's motivations simply because I've only played Y0, a game in which Saejima was barely mentioned. See character analysis by Scott Strichart in an AMA here) (contains major Y5 spoilers). I argue that Majima's tattoo, which existed pre-1985, foretells his arc and represents the conscious dualities of his nature. (The same could be argued for Nishikiyama's koi in relation to Kiryu's dragon and Japanese folklore, or how four of the protagonists' tattoos from later games represent the four Eastern Guardians, but those are their own walls of text.) According to the Yakuza fandom wiki (emphasis mine):
[Majima's tattoo] covers his biceps, upper chest, and stretches from his neck to the back of his thighs. It consists of a floral motif (similar to Shimano's), with a Hannya on his back, and twin snakes wrapped around his arms and chest.
I'm going to analyze Majima's tattoo in two parts: the symbology of the twin snakes in relation to his arc and the symbology of the Hannya. Snakes - Analysis Why the snake, of all animals, to represent Majima? Why not the dog, given that his nickname is 'The Mad Dog of Shimano'? While Majima matches the energy and loyalty of a dog, a dog would represent only the acted, artificial facets of his personality: him being 'leashed' in Sotenbori or 'barking' at thugs. Even this nickname is a red herring; if he were called 'The Serpent of Shimano,' that'd ruin the point of his entire façade(s). The serpent, in addition to a plethora of more specific cultural and historical symbologies associated with it, is hidden, agile, flexible, cunning, and deadly. This suits both of Majima's personalities more completely--even as his 'Lord of the Night' persona, in his Y0 introduction, he uses calculated, indirect methods to deal with a disruptive customer as the manager of The Grand. (In my opinion, all of the Youtube video clips of this introduction leave out the best part: the end of the night, when the player controlling him returns to a tiny, bare apartment on the trashy side of town after having just made 100 million yen managing his lavish cabaret, and collapses sleeplessly on a bare mat on the floor for another night of PTSD flashbacks.) In battle, especially in Y1/Kiwami onwards, Majima's style is quick and knife-like, relying on his speed and agility rather than brute physical force. We also see in multiple cutscenes, especially in Y0 (if you don't already believe he's acting most of the time either way), that he's capable of deception and guarding secrets when needed. This begs the second question--why twin snakes? As you can see in the concept art linked above, one of the snakes--the one prominently displayed on his chest--has its mouth open as if to strike, whereas the other--less visible and hanging off his shoulder--does not. They may represent the series' recurring theme of the Yakuza way of life being a dichotomy between criminality and civility. The snake alone represents the infinite cycle of death and rebirth in the classic symbol of the ouroboros, where it eats its own tail, and also has been portrayed for the dual contrasts of medicine/poison and good/evil. Whenever Majima embodies one of his personas, he 'sheds' the skin of the other, because much like pedestrian life (blood/married family, legitimate business, honesty, civility, tuxedo used for work, and long hair tied back) and Yakuza life (crime/sworn family, illicit business, manipulation, violence, snakeskin jacket that he chose, and loose short hair), the two are incompatible. His eyes are also symbolic in this way: one eye sees normally, while the other is mutilated and covered with a black eyepatch. This duality is displayed in Majima's many "snake skins," for (minor Kiwami 1 spoilers ahead) Majima is neither female (Goromi), lawful (Officer Majima), dead (Zombie Majima), a beloved celebrity (in-universe, anyway--Everyone's Idol Goro), nor a domestic service worker (at least in Kiwami 1--Taxi Driver Majima). We'll cover his last persona, Hannya-man, in the next section. The reason for Majima's duality existing is that psychologically, Majima needs both in order to be healthy and true to what he is: he needs to ground himself on occasion so he doesn't totally fly off the handle, and inversely, he needs to let his 'crazy' out in order to stay sane. Hannya - Analysis According to the Wikipedia article for Hannya:
The Hannya mask is said to be demonic and dangerous but also sorrowful and tormented, displaying the complexity of human emotions. When the actor looks straight ahead, the mask appears frightening and angry; when tilted slightly down, the face of the demon appears to be sorrowful, as though crying.
The original Japanese legend of the Hannya tells the story of a jealous, hideous she-demon-slash-beautiful woman twisted by betrayal. The 'frightening' side of the Hannya is Majima's crazy side that he shows in battle and when dealing with other yakuza, whereas the 'sorrowful' side is Majima's life outside of the yakuza. In real-world Japanese culture, the face of the Hannya is a mask used in kabuki theatre; Majima is wearing a mask at all times (both figuratively, and also on the tattoo on his back). There is no one in the world whom Majima can show both his sensitive/caring side without being hurt or manipulated, and his bloodthirsty/criminal side (he joined the yakuza of his own free will multiple times and seems to enjoy the thrill of a fight) without being feared or putting others in danger, to except for possibly the powerful but righteous and emotionally-balanced Kiryu, which helps explain why Majima's so drawn to him. We now focus our attention on Hannya-man, one of Majima's masks that he literally wears in a battle against Kiryu. In Kiwami 1, the main reason he fights Kiryu, despite threatening to kill him, is conversely to make Kiryu stronger after Kiryu gets out of ten years of prison. At the end of Yakuza 0 and Kiwami 2 (this entire section is gonna be one big spoiler about Majima's personal life through Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Yakuza 5 - I wouldn't click past the next spoiler if you haven't played Kiwami 2), Majima goes out of his way to avoid revealing who he is to Makoto in-person, even though he loves her; his ignorance of her in order to shield her from the yakuza life is his greatest act of love. It's interesting how much Makoto and Mirei compare and contrast in their personalities and relationship with Majima. This addresses the question of why the Hannya mask appears "sorrowful, as though crying" from a different angle. Majima never fully got over Makoto, the only character who understood what his year of torture and losing an eye was like; when Makoto gives him a massage and some closure by chance at the end of Kiwami 2 after she reveals that she ended up having a son with the doctor who saved her, Majima mutters to himself that by thanking him and telling him that she's been happy, she's untied some loose knots he's had "for 18 years." He's kept count of this in his head. The game executes the 'show-not-tell' rule of storytelling masterfully here--Majima never directly shows her nor tells anyone that he's in love with her. We only get this impression by his body language, actions, and dialogue from other characters like Shimano. Majima doesn't discuss his civilian life, at least in-game. We wouldn't even know about (major Y5 spoiler) his failed marriage and dead baby from 1992 if it weren't for another character's dialogue in Yakuza 5. For all we know, Majima could really want to become a father, but can't--in addition to his actions (again, Y5) towards Mirei upon finding out what she did, he displays fatherly instincts multiple times during Y0's civilian substories/hostess training, especially towards Yuki, and throwaway lines of dialogue during those trainings indicate he's not completely averse to having a kid. Unlike the Hannya in her jealous fury, Majima accepts that he would never receive a 'happy ending' from his relationship with Makoto, only a bittersweet one. Yes, that was a symbolic massage pun. His civilian life is, in some ways, ironically more tragic than his yakuza one. To conclude, Majima's tattoos tell their own lore--that of the multiple dualities of his story and character arc. I'll wrap up with a quote from Kurt Vonnegut, a 20th century writer who turned to the absurd to sculpt the effects of PTSD:
