We Are Energy Beings! Recap of S07E11

This season deserves a special award for inspiring flat-line boredom, with each storyline offering at least one awful person dripping poison over anyone kind or thoughtful.
Natalie: Mike wants for me to be the bad one. What is this farce?
Mike: I’m sorry, I can’t hear you over the I DON’T LOVE YOU.
When we last saw Mike, Natalie was spring cleaning his self-esteem the Marie Kondo way, except she torched everything that sparked joy to make room for more misery. Now he’s outside wondering why science hasn’t granted him the ability to beam onto an airplane to spare him the insult of standing in a Ukraine alleyway, waiting for his maybe-fiancée to flounce down the stairs and demand an apology for…something. Natalie, Our Lady of 1,000 Bluffs, somehow finds the strength and courage to amble down the stairs and sit in the backseat of an Uber for a melancholy airport adventure.
Natalie: Mike, everything is good. You must calm down and stop being so dramatic. This is gaslight like in movies. Now I must cure you of hysteria with vibrators and Valium.
Mike: I mean, do we have to keep filming? What if I jump out while the car is moving? Can that be your final scene?
Natalie thinks that in a perfect world Mike would apologize just for sport and then sweep her off her feet, which should be easy since they’re never on the ground. After several awkward airport moments Mike tells Natalie that he’ll call her later, but he needs time for detox and an exorcism. Natalie remains confused that Mike thought she loved him, based on the 30,000 times she said “I love you,” when he should have been able to read her rapidly changing narrative and anticipate ongoing rewrites. She approaches Mike to pretend she doesn’t know what’s going on, but Mike isn’t falling for that shit. He asks for a goodbye hug, she says no, and Mike bounces. Natalie sulks off to find her people in the Land of Bad Decisions, where Tania is waiting for her upon a throne of skulls.
Back home and no longer engaged, Mike is making pancakes for himself and Uncle Beau. Beau comes rushing in the door to ask Mike how the trip was, and to announce that he lost $25 at the casino last night and needs to borrow from the bank of Mike. So um…Mike’s entire life is apparently like this. Can Mike and Syngin get a beer together please?
Blake: I have friends.
Jasmin: I don’t care if Blake’s friends like me. I also don’t care if Blake likes me.
Blake is getting ready for his friend Everett’s birthday party, while Jasmin warms up her excuses for dodging it. Jasmin knows this party was the plan from the start, but decides against being a good introvert who tells him to go without her and to just enjoy himself. Instead, she attempts to smash Blake’s social butterfly in favor of a sober conversation about yoga and tea. She asks Blake if they can skip the pre-party dinner and just eat together, which Blake agrees to with the caveat that he will continue to express his dismay. Blake orders a drink, and Jasmin reminds him that you can’t talk to Jesus when you’re drunk.
Jasmin latches on to Blake drinking as her excuse for avoiding phase 2 of the evening’s pseudo-social interaction. She says she’s going to call her sister instead and pretend to be mad at him while being secretly relieved to enjoy blissful time away from his flock. What remains of Blake’s sense of humor about this situation gets lost trying to escape his hair. Jasmin tells the cameras that it’s selfish to ask her to go to a party, and totally forgets the part where it’s selfish to derail his plans because that plan is something she doesn’t want to do. Blake says that he’s tired of explaining her behavior to his friends. Neither one of these two is capable of having an adult argument, and are likely on a relationship subreddit as I type, posting a totally balanced report of their latest immature interaction.
Jasmin arrives at Janette’s clinical apartment, and declares that Blake refuses to do anything that interests her, because “everything is always about Blake.” She says that Finnish folks are calmer, while Janette tells her that she needs to keep trying to adapt, and by “keep trying” she means try at all.
Tania: Okay guys, I get it, I’m like, the villain here. Did anyone else just feel a weird rush of glee? That must be Mercury in douchebag and Mars going direct into asshole.
Totally grounded and focused financial wizard Fucking Tania has put her trusty pink shirt in time-out, for a responsible and goal-oriented phone call to an astrologer with a predictable funny name. But not before Syngin fetches precise room temperature water for her to swallow with her lizard tongue to maintain the skin suit that presents some approximation of humanity.
Syngin calls his mother to gather the data necessary for someone to cold-read Tania over Skype, and his mom clarifies that he was born at “twenty to three.” Resident expert Tania mansplains that this means 2:40, and this is apparently how she will feel superior today.
“We are energy beings,” Tania tanias. “And I was born at a certain time for a certain reason, and that reason is to vampire every shred of joy from Syngin’s twinkling soul.”
“Marie Kondo,” Natalia pipes in. “Clean out all of the joy.”
Astrologist Daizy October picked that name on purpose, and tells Tania something about “blueprints of the soul” which makes the first shelf of the New Age section of the bookstore start vibrating. She declares that Sagittarius is the archetype of travel, which is what one would say to someone who can afford Costa Rica but not a shed of one’s own.
Daizy: Now Mars in Scorpio, and Tania is in existence, which means there’s going to be some fighting, and sex is important. Syngin, blink if you need help.
Syngin: Oh yes.
Fucking Tania: Is that blood in the water? No wonder I’m hungry.
Syngin: By “oh yes” I meant yes, I need help.
Ms. October says that their souls bring them together, which would make sense if Tania had one, and asks if they’re soulmates. Syngin says their connection is so vivid he feels like he’s met her before, and then he died to escape her. Tania looks drunk on hurting Syngin, and pushes it further by insisting her first love was her soulmate, and he still is, even though she hasn’t been with that dude for like 8 years or so, and the restraining order keeps getting renewed over and over again. Syngin points out that they met in a star-crossed way, foolishly failing to note that hurting him is Tania’s entire objective.
“I feel like I don’t know what to say, because anything I say will hurt you, which is why I can’t stop laughing. I’m fine,” Tania reports. Then Syngin tells the cameras he needs a break to restore his essence, and Tania hovers in the doorway, eagerly anticipating the chance to harvest from him all over again.
So to recap: Tania, who trusts in the universe, does not trust that the universe gifted her Syngin, but instead believes that eventually she’ll be regifted the tattered remains of her original bottom, who has likely moved on to other astral alignments, and a thousand mile away zip code. Yep, this is pretty on brand for Tania.
Angela: I’m not the bad guy, I’m a tax payer!
Michael: I have a shopping list.
Angela’s chest is newly covered in an ancient pirate treasure map, guiding strangers to the booty in her bra. Her plan is to storm the American embassy and assert her tax payer status as a means of pushing this K-1 process forward. After ambling through the gates and harassing multiple members of security, she emerges and bellows to Michael. She says they wouldn’t let her into the embassy since she doesn’t have an appointment, and strangely, they don’t consider a white lady demanding a K-1 an emergency. Maybe she needed to explain that she’s working with the alternative reality where she can carry a child, and they wouldn’t give her Botox in her uterus.
The next day they go to Michael’s uncle’s house for dinner, but first they have to stop and pick up a microwave for Michael’s mother. Angela is worried that the material expectations increase with every dinner, and says that the gifts can’t keep growing in value.
“Please Angela. We need to present a love and respect microwave,” Michael persuades.
The man working at the store states a price far more than the microwave is worth, and then Michael says he should price it less because they’re going to get something else, too. This is his way of surprising Angela with a required gift for his uncle. She tells the shopkeeper that she’s got 15,000 stored under her best titty, and he should take it and call it good now that she’s his African sister. Okay then. The guy takes it, and she walks away with a microwave and kettle.
Angela is happy to visit his family, especially Michael’s mother, whom she loves so much. As the most junior, or newest, wife, Angela is expected to help cook and serve as a sign of humility. She awkwardly works on plantains while Michael insists he’s not expecting much in terms of domesticity once they are stateside, but he will expect her to cook, in addition to being the only breadwinner and caretaker for a bushel basket of people. Even the producer laughs, because the only thing Angela will be cooking in Georgia is Michael if he maintains that ridiculous idea.
Michael’s family starts asking about their wedding plans, and Angela explains that the K-1 is her family’s only opportunity to see her get hitched. They are eager for Michael to have a child with Angela’s ashy uterus, and his whole family starts weighing in on the matter, which nudges Angela right to the edge. She somehow keeps her mouth shut and remains respectful, even after Uncle says that if it doesn’t work Michael should move on to the next baby basket, which is a regional woman unlikely to arrive with household appliances. Are they trying to get on Maury? If you listen closely you can hear Angela’s internal kettle whistling away, and her microwave chiming ding-ding-ding.
Emily: You don’t have to be a Debbie Downer!
Betsy: I will be one ASAP!
Emily has freed Sasha from the clutches of Indiana in favor of her fake hometown Portland, where she takes him to Washington Park’s Rose Garden to show him how shitty west coast cities are, amirite Trump? Emily says that it’s going to be expensive to go from two-for-one Indiana to Portland’s most expensive suburb, confirming my suspicion that she’s from Lake Oswego, where Real Housewives ferment until their first divorce and rehab stint. This is good news for Sasha, who is very likely to find a wealth of personal training clients and his fourth wife there. Emily says they should get married ASAP, and Sasha agrees without knowing what ASAP means.
“After two weddings, third not so much,” Sasha shrugs. “Fourth will be court house. Fifth, maybe commitment ceremony.”
Emily heads back to scenic South Bend to save hundreds of dollars on a wedding dress. She says she’s leaning towards the Oregon coast as a wedding location, which makes sense if you don’t know that every venue from Brookings to Astoria is booked ages in advance, but she wouldn’t be the first or last person to turn that AirBnB into Plan A and Plan B. Emily’s sister is there to remind her that every idea she has about her impending nuptials is wrong, which is not fair to Emily, who knows every lace dress is better with piercing wind and sand. The salesperson hides in the dressing room from their endless passive-aggressive sparring, before coming out to place a veil and headpiece on Emily and make Betsy cry.
Robert: I’m terrible. Why are you always complaining?
Anny: I would like to go out with Robin or Mike now please.
Hey guys, you know how 90DF always has one trashy, delusional family that believes the fiancé is there to steal their no-money? Well, this round it’s fucking Robert, father of five who appears to be largely free from the burdens of child support...or who perhaps opts for tax-free employment for those very reasons. He’s dragging Anny and the other person who is nice to her (his sister Robin) to a restaurant to meet up with his equally-awful brother Kenny. Robin says that Bryson loves Anny and that she really likes her too, while Kenny gets busy disrespecting and humiliating her before she can work a “hello” out of her mouth.
Kenny wants to know how she’ll be in the future, and Anny suspects he doesn’t know what year it is, so she reminds him that they live in the present, and what matters is how they treat each other now. In response, Kenny says he’s not sure if he’s going to their wedding at all, carrying on the 9DF tradition of families that fail to notice it isn’t all about them.
Now fully defensive and uneasy, Anny asks if Kenny is cheap too, and Robin assures Anny that she wouldn’t be a fan of a thrift store shopping spree, either. This gets in the way of Robert and Kenny’s plan to disrespect women in public places, so Kenny asks if she always complains a lot. Anny corrects him that her issue is that Robert lies, and told her he had three kids instead of five, in addition to making endless empty promises of clothing, an apartment, and any expression of affection whatsoever. Kenny says that he has seven kids, which isn’t normally something you play as clap-back, but okay Kenny. Yes, seven is greater than five.
Anny has had it with them and their apparent plan to overpopulate the planet, and leaves and says that she feels alone. “That’s not the way you talk when you love somebody,” she says, speaking truth.
“Well, my fiancé only loves me on Thursdays. Do you want to get a beer with me and Syngin?” Mike is there for her.
Juliana: In this story, my family appears to be the villains, and this makes me sad.
Michael: I’m rich but my tux doesn’t fit.
On the day of the wedding, Max and CeCe are in conference about the gravity of the forthcoming nuptials, in between mugs of stiff black coffee and plates of almond biscotti.
CeCe: I’m feeling moderately uneasy, due to rigid societal expectations of appropriate age disparity. Surely if this were the era of Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” this wouldn’t even muddy my mind, but given the unfortunate modern conviction that a second spouse serves as an accessory and not a person, we have some educating to do.
Max: This seems a prudent way to address the offensive tongue of your friend Dakota, who has lived a sheltered life free from parental relationship development and sexual exploration. For now, I’ll simply relish the opportunity to wax poetic on their enduring love once mother has concluded her oratory.
CeCe: I have some concerns about you being assigned this important role, while I am relegated to the background. Is this sibling rivalry? Not very becoming of me, I’m sure.
Max: I validate your feelings of envy, but as the elder sibling I am allotted a generous portion of gloating which will carry all the way into the late stages of my adulthood.
CeCe: Is that when you argue with your wife about 401K distribution while I go to Burning Man in a modified school bus?
Max: Do you bite your thumb at me?
CeCe: I do bite my thumb at you, sir!
Meanwhile, Juliana’s friend Pao is there (no, not that Pao, who is only friends with Juan) along with her friend Cousy, who Juliana describes as like a second mom. Cousy lives in Milan, where Juliana met her during a modeling gig, and she sprung for the ticket to ease Juliana’s loneliness on her special day. In Michael’s wedding prep, we learn that he bought two tuxedos, and decides to wear the one that fits. Juliana wishes her mother could see her in her wedding dress, or was capable of acknowledging her existence when she’s not buying a car for her sister.
A gorgeous clear tent is set up to welcome wedding guests, all but two of which are friends or family of Michael. CeCe is on deck to tell Juliana she looks so pretty, while Max gives Michael a pep talk about toxic masculinity and exploring romantic relationships with an open heart. Cousy then hands her phone to Juliana to share a video she made of messages from Juliana’s friends who want to wish her well. Juliana keeps waiting for a relative to appear in this video, but it doesn’t happen, because apparently Juliana’s family has plenty of narcissists. Or maybe they’re hiding in the wings until the next episode? Either way, the family doesn’t so much as text her, and in the face of this intentional cruelty Juliana starts crying and struggles to stop, thawing the thickest layer of our cold black hearts.
Next time, Jasmin says she doesn’t want to work or smile or breathe, Sasha promises to love his third wife until he doesn’t, Juliana braces to be married by her future husband’s ex-wife, while Syngin finds a friend to mouth “help me” to when Tania is sleeping safely in her coffin.

Kenneth Smith (March 30, 1935 - May 13, 2020)

Kenneth L. Smith
March 30, 1935 - May 13, 2020
Kenneth Leroy Smith, "Walladawish," was one of the most important leaders of Indian Country and the most influential leader the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs had ever seen. He passed peacefully May 13, 2020 in his Warm Springs home overlooking the Deschutes River, surrounded by family.
He was a passionate advocate for the Indian Nation, giving a voice to those who had no voice. He believed the highest priority was to invest in the future generations of his people with the utmost respect and integrity, and to work together to make long-term strategic approaches instead of short-term gains. His philosophical outlook was taken from his grandparents. He said, "My grandparent's legacy will not end here. They instilled so much in me that I will carry forward my studies, my career direction, and a heart full of love for my family and a passion for my people. I will carry all they gave me with hopes the younger generations will follow, as I did them." He followed his roots to give Indian Country the voice it deserves. This included regulations and policies so Tribes could protect the forests, the wildlife, water, air, economics, the people, the children and the Tribal governments. In addition to creating economic sovereignty with his own people, he traveled all over the Country helping many other Tribes in numerous ways. He said, "I believe in the strengths of Indian people which have enabled them to endure and survive. I believe Indian people have the will and the ability to self-govern. The fulfillments, hopes and aspirations of Indian people and their Tribal governments must come from within."
Ken was born into the Wasco Tribe March 30, 1935 and raised by his grandparents, Annie and Wesley Smith, on Dry Hollow Ranch on the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Reservation. The ranch did not have electricity, running water or paved roads. He said "I learned what self reliance was growing up on the ranch with my grandparents. They taught me good work habits, to always show up 15 minutes early and the value of education. As a kid, my grandma Annie, Aunt Zelma and I would go pick huckleberries, raspberries, strawberries, and in the fall dig up potatoes." Ken and his grandfather fished for salmon and eel at Celilo Falls on the Columbia River. He always said that the ranch life of cattle and horses taught him about hard work, respect, listening, learning and how to be effective in what one does. He was taught how to take care of his physical body, mind and spiritual soul.
Ken attended boarding school in Warm Springs grades 1-6. He was Junior Class President at Madras High School and excelled as running back in football, 100 yards sprinting and long jumping for the track team.
In 1959 he earned his BS degree in Business Administration with emphasis in accounting, from the University of Oregon. At which time he was the second Native American to graduate from U of O.
Ken and Sybil Cowapoo were married in 1959 and later welcomed their children, Greg and Michele into the world.
In 1959, he immediately went to work for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs as an accountant. Thereafter, he worked as Head Accountant, Controller, Assistant General Manager, Acting General Manager, and as General Manager 1971-1981. He also served three years as an elected member of the 10th Tribal Council. Under his guidance the Kah-Nee-Ta Lodge Resort was built and the Warm Springs Power Enterprises completed, which was the first federally licensed hydro-electric project on any Indian Reservation.
His leadership style was believing in working together and ensuring the team was strong. He was a humble and fair man who always smiled and strived to keep the workplace in balance. Although he enjoyed joking around, he kept everyone on task towards accomplishing their goals for the benefit of all.
In 1981, he married Jeanie Marie Bussey Thompson, and their epic romance and adventures continued for 34 years, until her passing in 2015. Along with Jeanie, her two daughters, Debra and Becky Rae were brought into the family. In their retirement, Ken and Jeanie traveled to many countries experiencing different cultures. They lived between their homes in Warm Springs, Portland and Palms Springs. Their life together was full, vital, rich, diverse and full of mutual respect.
In 1981, newly elected President Reagan, asked Ken to serve as the Assistant Secretary of the Interior Department for Indian Affairs. As Assistant Secretary, Ken controlled a budget of one billion dollars, oversaw a workforce of 16,000, worked with 300 Tribes in the lower 48 states and provided services to 190 Alaskan Native Organizations. He administered 52,000,000 acres of trust land for Tribes and Indian people. Tim Giago, President and Publisher of "Indian Country Today" wrote, "Ken Smith was the best Assistant Secretary Indian Tribes have ever known."
From 1989-1995, Smith returned as Chief Executive OfficeSecretary-Treasurer for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. He was responsible for the second largest work force in North Central Oregon with an annual payroll of more than $24 million dollars at the time. The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs was renowned for being one of the most progressive and successful tribes in the United States. His actions provided the major impetus for cultural awareness, education, health and economic sovereignty among tribal members.

-$5 million dollar Early Childhood Education Center
-$5 million dollar Health and Wellness Center
-Launched a major breakthrough in diatomaceous earth technology that created the Warm Springs Composite Products

After his tenure in D.C., countless Tribes asked Ken to assist them. One example is the Coquille Tribe where he became the Coquille Economic Development Corporation leader, which became a national model of effective leadership and business among Tribal enterprises.
Smith's contributions were innumerable and he was a holder of many honors:

-2019, University of Oregon included him in their "Top 100 Ducks who made a difference"
We are truly saddened by the loss of this great leader and loved one. The best way to honor his legacy is for each of us to go forward and make a difference in the lives of others when we can, and to embrace our personal gifts and talents as Walladawish did. Rest in peace Walladawish. Don't worry. The work will be done. The focus will happen and movement will be made for our people. Thank you for creating the foundation for your family, the Reservation, Indian Country and most importantly future generations.
He is survived by his daughters, Michele Hensel (Kendal), Becky Rae Olson Schroeder (David), Debra Olson Daniels; eight siblings and so many others that this page is not big enough to hold them all. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanie; and son, Greg. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, we request contributions be made in his memory to the Museum at Warm Springs, P.O. Box 909, Warm Springs, OR 97761.

Delta Green AAR: State of Jefferson #0 Preparation

TL:DR: PTBP inspired me to run a Delta Green game and put together a campaign setting. To help with note taking and motivation, I decided to put together some After-Action reports and post them here.
-=-=-=-

Introduction

I run a weekly 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons game. Every Tuesday night for two years at this point for 6 PCs. Level 14, going on 15 in an adapted version of Paizo Publishing's Ironfang Invasion adventure path. We’ve probably got another six months of solid play, aiming for a finish at around level 18. Running this game for this long taught me a lot, even though it wasn’t my first long runner. But one thing it taught me above all else is:
I don’t want to run Dungeons and Dragons or anything like it anytime soon.
There's a whole tirade about why that is, but suffice to say a few months ago I started looking for a new system to replace 5e once my Tuesday night group was done with it. Plenty of good games stuck their heads up (Band of Blades/Blades in the Dark being my favourite) but none seemed to be a good fit for six people. Then I stumbled across PTBP and Delta Green.
I had played some CoC years ago and Sci-Fi Horror has to be my favourite genre of all time, tack on the modern setting and I was hooked. I had spent many hours reading SCPs and even a few writing some, plus running a Hunter:The Vigil game years back and even playing a Hunter LARP in the same time period. Plus the PTBP boys have such an infectious enthusiasm.
And then I actually ran a short 2-session story and realised that 6 PC Delta Green would be a nightmare. With the modern setting and the investigative style, players are constantly going off on tangents or separating the party. With 4 people and a tense feel, people stay interested, but with six (and more importantly, MY SIX), there is no way that it would be a cohesive session.
So I said what every ForeverDM says;
“This can become my campaign setting that I always say I’m working on!”
So I started writing a campaign setting for a Delta Green game that may never come. Enabling me to fully flesh out an entire region complete with NPCs, plots, eldritch horrors and the works! I’d slowly find players, run each of them through individual ‘Spookening’ sessions to show their origins into the Opera. It’d be dope! Having just finished my Honours Thesis, I wanted to establish writing as something I liked, not something I did for the expensive paper.
My Girlfriend was interested from the start and wanted desperately to play the game when it ran. I was talking about it a bit to different folks and when they asked ‘When is it running?’ or ‘Can I play?’ I would always say it wasn’t near ready, I mean, I hadn’t even mapped out all the airports in the region, how could I run a game there without knowing where the airports are? Eventually, I got cornered by four players (including my girlfriend) who wanted to be in the game, had a time, place and wanted to know if I would do it. This was the first lesson Delta Green taught me.
“Your campaign setting is never finished and nothing will make you write your important stuff like a game in three hours.”
So, I ran session 1 on a Sunday evening and haven’t looked back. This AAR will be an account of the setting, the story, and our agents as they travel a hopefully extreme and entertaining story. Hopefully, none of them end up on here since I’ll also try to include my Keeper perspective and process of putting together this setting.
Finally, a massive thank you to the PTBP boys, I’m not entirely up to date as of writing this (EP58) but I’m stoked to be an Honorary Police Officer and owe a lot of these ideas and growth to Zach’s style and the boy's hijinks.
-=-=-=-

The Setting.

As a preface, I’m not an American. I’m an Australian who’s never been to the Western Hemisphere. So my apologies for butchering your country, your towns, and your overall culture. I've moved some history around and changed some events to make my timeline work. Hopefully it's not offensive.
The basis and name of the setting is something I learned about from another podcast (shout out the BehindTheBastards and ItCouldHappenHere). The State of Jefferson is a secessionist movement in rural Northern California and Southern Oregon. Essentially a right-wing/rural response to the liberal cities of LA and Portland, these regions want to secede from California and Oregon, becoming the 51st American state. A Pacific NorthWest setting gives tonnes of great locales, from Redwood forests, mountain peaks, wild rivers and even some desert thrown in there. Couple this with problems with limited law enforcement, a multicultural history, and the stories write themselves.
I started by putting a map together since that always helps me visualise what I’m working with, plus at this point, this was just a campaign setting, not an active game. I made this map by taking one of the proposed State of Jefferson maps that I liked, editing out the state names, then searching for the incorporated cities of each county, along with their county seats. I didn’t use many scales, as you can see, and it makes Weaverville look really important even though it has a population of around 3,600. I also placed the state capital in Redding, after looking at the discourse around SOJ, turns out some want it to be Yreka, CA, since that was first suggested back in the sixties. But I couldn’t see that happening now. So I ended up with this map: https://imgur.com/a/Bx5Mnv6
So now I needed to make the State of Jefferson a thing, how would that happen in 2020?
I could see Trump doing it, in a crazy situation.
Jefferson counties are pretty solidly Republican, for the same reasons they want to be their own state to begin with. So I imagined a 2020 electoral race where Trump engaged with these far-right groups like the militias and such, promising a look into a 51st state. But saying it and doing it are two separate things. So let's ratchet up the tension some more.
Trump wins 2020, promising to look into the State of Jefferson. 2021 Trump has a massive stroke. Initially, it looks like he’s not going to pull through, the GOP starts planning for his replacement to step up. Current VP is an old-school Neocon named Andrew Cohen. But Trump does pull through and despite some major health concerns, seems convinced to stay in the White House. The old-school Neocons behind Andrew Cohen that used to be the soul of the GOP smelled power again and don’t want to give in, meanwhile the New-Right cultural conservatives backing Trump smell a coup. The GOP starts to implode. Trump, desperate to solidify his base, is firing out executive orders left, right and center. One of them is the creation of the State of Jefferson. A year later, it's 2022, Andrew Cohen is acting President and national politics is a shitshow. So many executive orders went out that it's impossible to pull them all back and it looks like Jefferson is going to stick.
But our players are going to be Federal agents, what are they doing in this backwoods state? Well, I imagine a new state appearing largely out of nowhere would throw all the federal departments a curveball. Suddenly they need to work out if the FBI needs a headquarters in Redding, what about DoD? DoJ? So they send a big audit team to work out what federal government efforts would be needed in the new state. This would be called ‘The Office of Temporary Handover’ and would be the taskforce my players would be assigned to. What I wrote up is as follows:

Office of Temporary Handover

A fifty person strong taskforce, the OTH is made of representatives of a large variety of shifting government departments. Their job was originally twofold:
-Maintain the essential functions of their organisations during the handover and establishment of the state.
-Assess the State of Jefferson for their various organisations, in regards to offices, resources, and personnel.
Officially the Federal Office of Temporary Handover was established on the 1st of April, 2022 at 2042 South Market St in Redding, which was to be the state capitol (not without a considerable fight from Chico, Eureka, and Yreka). Originally the OTH was headed up by Brennan Bartlet from the Department of Labour. Originally the DOL had intended the main aspects of the OTH to be assessing manpower requirements to then be passed onto the government departments to fulfill.
However, quickly after arriving on the ground in Redding, OTH leaders found that the twin regions of Southern Oregon and Northern California were a mess. Thirty years of, in some cases, criminal negligence from state governments had resulted in thousands of missed assessments, unsolved cases, and questionable decisions. The first big scoop was found by an analyst for the Treasury Department (Kyle Chapman) who found that all judicial efforts undertaken in the town of Paisley in Lake County had been taken over by the Millennium Forestry Company. Pulling on this string revealed the start of the problems for the OTH.
Quickly, Bartlet was replaced by Agent Luciano Pareja from the Department of Homeland security. The call went wide to nearly every single federal department to get their asses to Jefferson and work out what was going wrong in their respective fields. 2042 South Market street became a circus with the Department of Agriculture surveyors sharing offices with Aviation officials while the Department of Defence investigators camp out in the staircase.
It was during these initial investigations that things got interesting for those who were paying attention. The initial deluge of cases caught up all the obvious things, there had been no services conducted on the East Coast Cable Terminus in Point Arena was overdue for servicing by fifteen years, there were exactly fifteen missing persons reported in Modoc county national parks four years in a row and Douglas County sheriff Lyle Parsins has held the position for ten years despite the county records holding death certificates Parsins from 2007,2017 and 2019.
These odd reports languished in the stacks upon stacks of issues reported and aside from being mildly interesting when they were discovered, there were bigger fish to fry. Kyle Chapman later revealed a conspiracy of kickbacks and corruption between the Millennium Forestry and the Lake County supervisory council worth more than 13 million dollars, earning himself a tasty promotion. At the same time, the DA of Siskyou county was gunned down by a motorcyclist in Dorris. Two things became clear to everyone working in the OTH;
  1. There is so much to uncover in Jefferson that the real task is finding the biggest malfeasance you can and riding that investigation all the way to the top.
  2. The bigger the malfeasance, the bigger the risk that someone might try to take it from you or that it might blow up in your face.
This allowed those strange cases that were more interesting than juicy to slip through the cracks but also caused the OTH offices to become a den of paranoia staffed by some of the most ambitious young workers for these federal departments.
Its been two months since Kyle Chapman’s case hit the state court in Redding and 2042 South Market has spilled out into the parking lot with a massive gazebo. It's a hot summer and there is the promise of promotion around every corner as our PC’s arrive. The right and wrong kind of people have started to see the dots that need connecting, here's hoping someone stops finding dots.

Note: Sam, Bree, James, and Roni, if you have somehow ended up here, turn back now.
Finally, we needed a bad guy. This was the thing I had been avoiding, in favor of working out how many and where all the military bases are in Northern Cali and Southern Oregon (creating a real suspicious google history along the way). Being an investigative and paranoia based game about cults and conspiracy, I didn’t want to just to a ‘Monster of the Week’ style game. Plus one of my players is pretty well versed in his Cthulhu mythos, so I didn’t want to do something standard. Which made me want to stay away from Deep ones and fishbits (although maybe I can work the absence of Deep ones a plot point later on?)
So what do I have? I’ve got a need for a massive conspiracy, lots of pristine wilderness, a history of big American Indian tribes, Spanish Colonisation and American power. Plus a new state.
I know, let’s make the new state the conspiracy.
For some reason making this new state is part of some eldritch ritual about power and such. Sounds dope. Which Old God cares about human power structures and the corruption of man? Old buddy Nylarthotep.
Bam, we’ve got a non-standard bad guy and a huge conspiracy that can be staring them in the face the whole time. It turns the passive hints about the chaos of creating a new state into subtle easter eggs dotting the campaign.
But I also don’t want the eldritch ritual to be already done. Gotta give the players a chance to die trying to save the world. So perhaps it's just a step in the overall ritual. How many steps are there in the ritual? Well, a d20 roll tells me that there’s 16. It sounds like a good number to me. A story was coming together:
It was thousands of years past the original humans encountered the being known as Emperor of Sky and Earth, Ne-ab Gendumahaah, or simply the Spirit of Man, an implicit force in the Northern United States that influenced the minds of the powerful through dreams and visions. It would be the dreams of Ne-Ab Gendumahaah that would lead Rabbit Foot to solidify the Shasta people into a great confederacy. Where his favour goes, great power forms and those powerful will become great.
In reality, The Spirit of Man is an aspect of Nylarthotep, the chaos messenger of the Sultan, Azzathoth. What is happening in the North West is one spark of weakness that plays out as a flame of weakness against Azzathoth by his agent. A fleck of paint and pain on a tapestry millions of years and miles old.
The original intention of the Spirit of Man was the completion of sixteen rituals across the region. As more and more of these rituals would be completed they would weaken the differences between realities, these would corrupt the minds and world to the whims of those who would be powerful, granting them longevity and even passively twisting the world to support them. But it would weaken the nature of reality for all others, bringing in great monsters and factors. If all sixteen rituals were completed the Spirit of Man would be brought forward to bequeath true power onto the successful, in reality, the knowledge of Nylarthotep would be its own downfall as the invoker would be rent asunder and the damage wrought by the pursuit would wink throughout the cosmos.
The first ritual would be completed by a shaman of the Goshute People 30,000 Years ago. By the year 1700, the Shasta people had completed four rituals in total, this created the most powerful tribal confederacy of the West Coast. But the native Americans feared Ne-Ab Gendumahaah, intensely fearful of the give and take of existence, were difficult to enrapture to the power of the Spirit, but the White man was not. The Spanish would complete six rituals in the period between 1660 and 1840. The American people have completed five since the Union arrived, the last being the consecration of the Redding State Legislature. Now forces move to complete the final ritual as the Office of Temporary Handover comes into the picture. The players have to discover the connections between the rituals and attempt to stop the cabal of the rich and powerful before millions of people are killed.
-=-=-
This will leave the players investigating the fallout of rituals conducted long in the past, trying to put the dots together in time to stop the last few being completed.
This was about all I had going into session one. Since then we’ve had four total sessions and it's been a ride. Next time I’ll talk about session one and individual session planning/running. Thankyou for reading this and thank you again to the PTBP boys and community for being so amazing.
P.S - I tried to settle on a campaign theme like PTBP's No Backbone, at this point I'm split between Two Gallants - Fly Low Carrion Crow and Boogeyman - Black Casino and the Ghost.

West Coast Bias! A weekly look at the Pac 12

It’s September and college is back. All the signs are here. The tailgaters are out, several schools from Texas were embarrassed on a national stage, and CFB is running on full steam. Since I abruptly abandoned my Who’s In, Who’s Out feature roughly two years ago (I told him I was out to get a pack of smokes) a few things have happened in my life. I finished grad school, I no longer live with my parents, and I am in year 2 of my career. How does it feel to be financially independent? It fucking sucks! I have no time to watch all the college football I want because I am too busy taking care of adult responsibilities! What is this shit? I couldn’t even write anything last year because I was in the fist year of my job and I didn’t even have time to fix my typos!
So anyway I knew that if I was going to make my much anticipated (citation needed) return to cfb, I needed to scale things back a little bit. Instead of commenting on the entire football landscape, I will instead say a few words about my neck of the woods. The Conference of Champions! The Best Coast! As Bill Walton would say, “12 Tribes No Casino” (which I am now realizing is an extremely racist thing to say). THE PAC 12! In this feature I will go over the most interesting games of the Pac 12 weekend and give mention to certain teams (whether they would want it or not). Nonetheless you can expect the kind of quality analysis that I am known for (those of you who subbed in the last two years, please keep your expectations low and you’ll be on the same level as everyone else).
Pac-12
THE BIG STORY
California
Cal took their first year head coach Justin Wilcox to North Carolina for a date with the Tar Heels. It turned out to be a pretty hot date. The Golden Bears were led by Sophomore Quarterback Ross Bowers, also making his debut, who threw for 363 yards and 4 touchdowns. Cal were underdogs going into the match but this could end up being a good win to build off of in the future. The narrative this year in the Pac is all about the quarterbacks from LA and Washington, but if Bowers continues to put up numbers, he may make some noise this year. Or he may be battered and broken up in the raging gauntlet that is the Pac 12 North. We’ll see.
USC
This game will primarily be known for being the on field debut of blind long snapper and awkward Lee Corso moment recipient Jake Olson. I’ve been following his story since it broke around 2009 and I am so happy that he got to take the field in the Coliseum. With all sincerity I hope he gets the chance to do it many more times this season. But while this may have been the focus in the media, for those who were actually watching the game, they probably weren’t as impressed with USC as they thought they would be. On one hand, Western Michigan is no slouch. They won the MAC last year and only lost one game that season. On the other hand, if you are the #4 team in the country and your quarterback is the preseason Heisman favorite, you shouldn’t struggle in games like this. If USC plays to their full potential, a playoff spot is in the cards, but they play at the same level they did for three quarters on Saturday. The Pac 12 is going to be brutal this year and they also have non-conference games against Notre Dame and Texas… well the Pac 12 is going to be brutal this year. Of course, they can erase any doubt next week against Stanford.
UCLA
So…I didn’t watch this full game. I was excited to watch it, turned it on, got less excited, and then turned it off at halftime to smoke pot, watch Rick and Morty, and fall asleep on the couch. I had a strange dream that Rick had portal’d me to an alternate dimension where UCLA won this game despite the fact that Texas A&M was up by 27 at the end of the third quarter. It was a strange alien world where the Rose Bowl was actually a Mobius strip shaped stadium with an endless football field. All the while Josh Rosen went from only completing 9 passes in the first half to leading a major 35 point comeback after Rick injected him with the muscle memory of a Heisman Trophy candidate. There was also an alien creature that looked a lot like the Atlanta Falcon logo, I didn’t read too much into it.
RACE TO THE BOTTOM
Another thing I will be doing in this feature is trying to find the top candidate for the bottom spot in the Pac 12. Arizona finished in the bottom last year, and previous bottom feeder Colorado did a complete 180 winning the Pac 12 South. This year it will be interesting to see who comes out last but there is a pretty obvious candidate at the moment.
Oregon State
Last year was a huge year for the Beaves. Not because they became bowl elgible, they didn’t. Not because they had any major upsets, they didn’t. It was because after 9 long years they finally beat their in state rivals from Eugene in the Civil War causing my Ducks to finish last in the division. This was supposed to be a turning point in the Gary Andserson era for Oregon State. So what did they do with their new-found confidence? Got their asses kicked by Colorado State and barely beat Portland State. Their “win” against the Vikings was sealed when a kicker who had never stepped foot on a college football field was called upon to tie the game and force overtime. The kick went wide right and Beavers avoided total embarrassment settling for only partial embarassment. There is a lot of football left to be played, but as of now, the Beavers are the top candidate for the bottom of the Pac.
Week 2 Predictions
Texas State at Colorado Buffs win big
Nebraska at Oregon the Ducks won’t win the Pac, but they will rebound in a big way starting on Saturday
Weber State vs California after a tough debut for Wilcox, he gets a cupcake. He’ll lick it good.
Hawai'i at UCLA, I am tempted to say big game hangover but I’ll stick with UCLA
Montana at Washington Browning gets an easy win
Minnesota at Oregon State Beavers can prove me wrong with a win. They won’t. Gophers take control early and never give it up.
Boise State vs Washington State high scoring affair. Cougs take it.
Houston at Arizona high scoring affair. Cougs take it.
San Diego State at Arizona State Devils by two scores
Utah at BYU BYU will play better than they did against LSU. Won’t matter. Utes.
Stanford at USC Sam Darnold’s Heisman campaign can take a big step with a win. It won’t. Stanford in an upset.

To Uncle Rico in Portland, I fell hard in 12 hours

I'm drinking a Caesar as I write this; it tastes like a memory of the one you couldn't procure for me at the casino bar. I'm using the pink pen I used to feverishly scribble my number in hopes of seeing you one more time. You stuffed that scrap of paper in your pocket, took my face in your hands and kissed me. Then you looked into my eyes and gave me a "chin up" kiddo and I knew I'd never see you again. It's not the one night stand that is the problem you see, I've had my share and I'm a pro. It's where you found me in my life that screwed things up. I generally keep sex and talking mutually exclusive but I'd decided to start giving people chances. I'm ready for something real. The night before I met you I spent with a man I was giving a chance to. After you, it feels like he'll never hit the bar and that terrifies me. The other odd thing is that neither of us pursued the other. We were wing men brought together by the desires of our friends and I honestly believe we had the better time. Remember the chip on my shoulder? Did you see how it melted away the minute they were gone? I can't remember the last time I felt so comfortable in someone's company. I started "Lost" and I wonder if you've checked out "A Handmaids Tale"? I wonder if I've crossed your mind even once? It's only been a few days. Then I recall you didn't remember my name even at breakfast and I know. I wonder if you're really divorced? But does that even matter? It was a lovely time spent between two consenting adults and one of us came out a little worse for wear. Or maybe not? Maybe you were the universe telling /showing me that not everyone is worthy of a chance. That I deserve head and foot massages, back cracking and doors opened. Someone who matches me mentally, who I always feel comfortable with. My best friend is moving to Oregon next month. My kids have never seen the ocean, and I know, when we visit, I will stand on a beach and wonder if you've ever stood there to. When I'm buying groceries in too large a quantity for my family of two (because I love Costco) you'll cross my mind. You changed the game Portland and I'm scared. I may never truly enjoy another Caesar and I might just toss this pretty pink pen. Nothing but LOVE from Montana, Cracker, Ritz. T is for Triscuit. XoXo Trista

The Cult Novelette Final Chapter

Chapter 6 Macy showed up while I was sleeping. I was so happy I started crying. She hugged me and I told her what Jerry had said and asked if it was true.

'Why do they always go to Jerry?' she asked manically as if I wasn't there. 'Don't listen to him.'

She told me she was just checking up on me. I think she had spoken to Jerry and knew I learned she wasn't at the police station, and never had been. When she left, I wished I had more kind. Who was Macy, really? Why did she tell me she loved me when she couldn't possibly? She had lied. I left the apartment. I decided to go to work and tell Daniel I was quitting, but I worried what Anne would think. What if Anne was just like Macy?

The firm was locked. I had no idea where anyone could be. So, for the last time, I drove across town again to my Mom's, and found Anne, Daniel, Jerry, Mom, and Mika, but not Macy. Daniel spoke first after I entered the doorway.
'Cat Lady Marketing has officially closed down,' he said. He sounded very intoxicated. 'It has achieved its purpose thanks to you, Adam, and we will be forever in your debt. Morrissey is on his way.'
I couldn't speak, once again. Morrissey was coming? I ignored Daniel and went into my room. ANne came in after less than a minute. 'Adam, do you remember when you got the job after the wreck?'
I started shouting. 'What the fuck is going on, Anne? Why are all these people at my mother's?'
'Your mom was worried about you and eventually found Morrissey who found Macy,' she said. 'We have something to tell you. After the wreck, your friends at the restaurant noticed something very worrisome about you. You were seriously mentally handicapped. You were getting better after a couple of days, but they were worried you might get in a dangerous situation and get yourself killed.
'What? I feel exactly the same! I was just weird because of debian.'
'Adam, debian is a spaceship piloted by the E.T. named Archiphethesces. The medicine was given to the organization Macy and I work for, but was created inside the ship. It has helped a lot of people. But the truth has to be told. That was your job.'
'My job was to help Daniel with the Articles,' I said. 'I worked with you at Cat Lady Marketing to help the client.'
She explained that Mika had rented a building during the time I worked at the restaurant. The firm was a cover. Also, she explained that the client was in fact a part of Macy's organization, and that I was a front man for a very important mission for that organization. Or, if I preferred to think of it that way, I was on a mission for the 'client.'
'What mission?' I asked.
'You'll find out later. They simply can't tell you everything right now. For now, Morrissey is going to take you to the airport.' Stunned, I agreed only on account of the trauma of the discovery that Daniel and Anne and even Macy were all lying to me about who they were and what they wanted me to do. Morrissey was in a jacket and told me I'd be alright.
'It's a little unsafe for you right now in the city. There's going to be a big impact on the public, and you might be a target. Your friends will be leaving, too, but you're going to Oregon. The flight leaves in three hours. I'm going to take you there and fly with you to Oregon. If you could do one thing for me, and that's pretend I'm your father once we get to Oregon, we'll have a much easier time. I don't think anyone will ask too many questions especially if we lie low. I want you to know you're safe with me. I'm trained at this sort of thing. Just think of how important it is that you stay with me.' I thought, my friends?
"Where is Macy?" I asked.
"Macy is Portland. She has been there since she disappeared after the incident at the casino," he said. "She was arrested and taken to Portland on account of her rank. She's been watching you in your apartment with Anne . . ."
I tried to think of Macy and wanted to ask where she was again, but by then I knew the truth. I followed Morrissey out of house with the obedience of a child.
I pretended Morrissey was my father.
I boarded the plane without saying a word.
I thought, realities are playthings to Macy and her captains.
I felt struck with utter loss.
Finally, the complete thought occurred that Macy had not been at the apartments with Anne and me, and that I wrote the Articles myself. I really might be the Iris archetype. I hadn't been lied to at all.
I thought, maybe I had created something which would hurt a lot of people. Would the world take the ad seriously? If it did, then what would happen? Had I really been the person to announce the presence of aliens on the planet?
In the carryon Morrissey gave me, I finally found the mp3 player with the Black Keys album I used to comfort myself. Before I listened to the album, I noticed one mp3 file which stood out at the end of the list. It was titled, 'To Adam.' It was a recording of Macy's voice.
'Adam, I just want to say that you have done an amazing job. I'm with Jerry and he agrees. I'm so sorry we all had to lie to you and I know how you must feel. Trust me. I've been watching you through cameras in your apartment with Jerry. Anne really loves you, even though she does know about the plan. She thinks you are one of the deepest, most lovable young men on the planet. Your part of the mission is over. You won't have to live like a famous person, or anything, if that's what you're wondering. I met you through your mom's job at the shelter originally. I am actually a government agent. Remember what you learned in school about the war on drugs? Remember DARE? Well, that's sort of my job. And one of the most devastating weapons the enemy has is Chem 1. I've used it for years to try to understand it and there's nothing I can tell you right now to confirm we have any chance in overcoming it, the killer that it is. It's taken many lives and hopefully will take fewer lives now because of what you've done. The drug itself has an occult importance among certain very important people who control the economy, the media, you name it. They are all under the influence of Chem 1, which they secretly take in pill form. The reality is much worse than you think. My agency completed an assignment on the origins of the drug and what we found was very scary, Adam, and that's why your job is so important. Chem 1 was brought on earth to destroy humanity. It is the spirit of a being known as Archiphethesces, king of lies. He has lived on earth for as long as humanity had evolved. The only thing in this solar system that Archiphethesces fears is his ship, which has an artificial intelligence on board which interferes with his tinkering with the human population. As far we know, he is a criminal to his own kind. That's how we won, Adam. That's how you won. His ship, called debian, is the key to fighting Archiphethesces. He himself is invisible but his ship we have found. By scanning the ship we learned how to create the medicine which, I must say, is a very technologically advanced little pill. It's how you survived after the TBI. And that wreck you got into possibly saved the mission from total failure. You see, without telling someone of Archiphethesces, it was nearly impossible to show the world what we had learned without the E.T.'s puppets making us out to be lunatics. Of course, there's also the possibility that any person could be killed immediately upon contact with us. That's why we had to break up the first time. But when you injured your brain, we made the decision to move forward with Article 6. We got very lucky. It could have been years before we had another chance like that, and our medication was doing well right then in the media. Article 6 may never have happened if we hadn't done this to you. We're so very sorry but your mom will be joining you soon.' I was sick from crying. 'Don't worry; you'll regain your short term memory and cognitive ability by a very large degree someday soon. Just keep persevering, Adam. You taught me that. I love you.'
The plane arrived in Oregon in just five hours. Morrissey said, 'The flight attendant will take care of your cans. Let's just get to the apartment and go to sleep.'
I followed him across the walkway which eventually curved into the terminal, out of the airport and into a car which was parked under the garage. When we got out, I could see the whole sky. We weren't near any city, and after driving a little ways out of the airport parking lot I could see every single star in the entire sky. And I thought maybe debian had followed me. I wondered if Macy would survive after taking so much Chem 1. Then I thought, what is this medicine that's inside me? Orion itself was my comfort on the drive home.

Headcannon - Fallout: Willamette - Thoughts/Ideas for a New Vegas Type Sequal to Fo4

Posted this on another thread about what a New Vegas style sequel to Fallout 4 might look like, and apparently falloutlore was the wrong place to make a thread about it. So trying this once more, here are my thoughts about what a Fo4 spinoff set in Oregon could look like.
Setting:
Oregon, Northern Willamette Valley.
Have the map stretch from Portland/Maybe Vancouver, WA in the north down to Salem, maybe Eugene if they wanna be real ambitious.
Now I know Oregon isn't as big a name as DC, Boston, or Vegas but I think as a setting it has alot to offer.
*A large metropolis in the North. *Numerous towns and cities to act as population centers spread out through out the wilderness *Plenty of wilderness and undeveloped land to explore. *Deep history to build off of. How fun would it be to have Lewis and Clark or Oregon Trail themed quests and settlements. If they could somehow take the settlement building system and incorporate a Oregon Trail-esqu aspect to it that'd be amazing. *Plenty of lore about ferocious creatures in the wild. Angry mutated owls or some mutated sasquatch. (How cool would that be?!) *Proximity to the NCR Could bring back the casino system. I mean one of the most visited place in Oregon is Spirit Mountain Casino. Having the Confederafted Tribe of the Grand Ronde as a power in the region would be pretty cool now that I think of it. *And the list goes on.
Plot: The plot could focus around a similar geopolitical struggle to New Vegas's. The NCR has traditionally been the power in the region. The Northern most states of New Arroyo and Klamath include parts of the State of Oregon and are thus geographically close to the Willamette Valley. This proximity has created close ties between the NCR and the valley region.
However, since the events of New Vegas the NCR has become far more isolationist. (I'm going to assume the currier sides with the NCR in the end of NV). Despite its success in the war with Ceaser's legion, the NCR has found itself strained. The annexation of New Vegas has not go smoothly, the government's resources remain tight after having to finance a long war, and the economy has since faltered. All that has resulted in an NCR population that is far more reticent to get involved in areas beyond its boarders.
Meanwhile, a pseudo-facist power has risen out of the remains of the Seattle-Vancouver Megalopolis. It's government does not center around a central figure as much as a leading party. (Think post-Stalin Soviet Union). It is a very militarist and expansionist state and has done much to improve the lives of those in the former Megalopolis to the north of the Columbia. However, it is a very repressive regime and uncooperative people, dissidents, and "undesirables" tend to go missing.
In the Willamette Valley there is no single power so much as an assortment of closely tied city states. (Think, ancient Greece). The region has benefited from a number of natural and geographical advantages. *First, the region was not so hard hit during the Great War. Aside from Portland, it lacked a major economic, political, or military target to focus on. *Second, after the formation of the NCR the region benefited from economic ties with the republic. *Third, its vast wilderness (preserved as national and state parks before the Great War) have given the people an abundance of natural resources, which became even more valuable as the NCR's economy expanded. *Finally, the region was also relatively less dependant on fossil and nuclear fuels before the Great War. In the 1930's great hydroelectric damns were built to power the region, many of which remain and provide electricity to the larger population centers.
These multiple benefits however, have become somewhat of a liability in recent years. As the NCR's economy has faltered so too has its demand for raw materials. This in-turn has lead to a severe downturn in the region, which itself has caused unrest and instability.
Meanwhile the military power to the north eyes the region for its vast resources and many damns. It has been hesitant thus far to act too aggressively less it incur the wrath of the NCR. But now, as the NCR becomes more isolationist, things are beginning to change.
The city states in the valley, once largely unified, are beginning to fracture and become more hostile towards one another. These divisions are being further pushed by agents from the north that have begun spreading unrest and distrust among the people. Bands of political extremists who associate with the ideology of the northern power have popped up across the region. The situation is tinder box, waiting to be lit.
This is the situation your character would walk into. I'm not sure what the best back story for your character would be. Maybe another vault dweller, maybe a former raider from the east, maybe you start as an agent from the north. Or, you come in on a new post-war Oregon Trail caravan. A lot of cool options.
From wherever you start you could have a lot of options as to where to go. Work with the power from the north to create a casus belli for war in the valley, work with NCR opposition to try to get the republic to act to push the northerners back, pick a city state that you like the most and work with them to dominate the region independent of the other powers, form your own raider band and make yourself a power in the region, maybe something else entirely. Meanwhile you'll fight sasquatchs, lead your own post-apocalypse band of Oregon pioneers, find out what happened to the BOS in the area, explore the wilds, find isolated vaults, manage settlements, and so on.
Other Thoughts
*I was thinking about the Sasquatch creatures and thought it would be cool if they were actually just mutated beavers. (Since Oregon is the beaver state) There could be a whole plot line revolving around this. They could have extremely valuable pelts, and there could be a whole industry around collecting these. Similar to the original trapping industry that brought Europeans to the region. As the economy has slowed in the region and in the NCR, these pelts retain their value. Wealthy classes in the NCR value them as a luxury, and people in former BC and Alaska value them as the best materials for clothing to survive harsh winters.
So as other industries in the region have slowed, more and more people have begun resorting to hunting down these creatures for their pelts. Your character could have a quest where they go out with a group of trappers to catch one. During the mission, you get separated from your group and taken captive by one of the creatures, at which point you find out that they are semi-sentient beings. Then you have to decide whether to protect the creatures or help the struggling trappers.
*Another fun potential underlying narrative could be the arrival of more and more settlers from the New Oregon Trail. The reemergence of the Khans and the constant war between factions of the former Caesar's Legion have made life in the plains increasingly difficult. As a result more and more people have started heading west to search for greener pastures.
The NCR's isolationism has shunned these immigrants and they have refused to admit any into the republic. As a result an increasing number of immigrants are arriving to the Willamette Valley region. This has increased tensions within the region between the several city states as each handles the settlers in different ways. Many in the region resent the influx of immigrants as the current downturn, they feel, makes things hard enough. You character has to navigate this issue as they deal with the delicate political situation in the region. (Could even be directly effected by it, if your character begins their journey as a settler coming into the region.)
*Another idea has to do with potentially making the Portland area far more unstable than the rest of the region. A sort of anarchic area where a number of factions and raiders fight for control. This would be the central point of conflict re: the power in the north.

Old headcannon I wrote up. Think it relates, sharing to see if y'all want to use/adapt any ideas.

Just copied and pasted from an old post. I'm from Oregon so that's where this is focused, but I think a much of it is adaptable.

Fallout: Willamette (Aka my head cannon dream for a New Vegas style game)

Posted this on another thread about what obsidian could do, would like to see what others think.
I would like to see another game, like NV, before fallout 5. I'd love to a) see what more can be done with this engine, and b) get another story in the West. Here's my head cannon fantasy of what they could do:
Setting: Oregon, Northern Willamette Valley. Have the map stretch from Portland/Maybe Vancouver, WA in the north down to Salem, maybe Eugene if they wanna be real ambitious.
Now I know Oregon isn't as big a name as DC, Boston, or Vegas but I think as a setting it has alot to offer.

Proximity to the NCR
Could bring back the casino system. I mean one of the most visited place in Oregon is Spirit Mountain Casino. Having the Confederafted Tribe of the Grand Ronde as a power in the region would be pretty cool now that I think of it.

An idea for a collaborative MGSV conclusion

This is a post I originally did under another username on Metal Gear Wiki, and someone suggested putting it up here. So here's my idea: Basically, it'd be called Metal Gear Solid V: Dispatches From Outer Heaven. A giant conclusion to V, made by a bunch of us working together to come up with a giant game plan and story line and such, detailing the events from the recovery of Sahelanthropus to Venom Snake's final defeated moments before heading off to fight Solid Snake in Outer Heaven. Also flashbacks, subplots, you name it. I'm thinking big, like Sergio Leone's original 10-hour cut of Once Upon A Time In America, but exponentially bigger. Who knows, we could even send it to Konami and see if they make it. Is anyone here interested? Oh, and I'm happy to be on this fine sub-reddit. Now for stuff I posted at the MG wiki.
Basically a bunch of changes and additions that could have been done, a subject that I'm sure makes everyone here just want to snap and kill Kojima or Konami for the game. So before I start, no acidic anything, please.
1) Major expansions to the story. The core is already there, but to use an analogy, it is a draft or a scriptment instead of a thousand page novel it could have been. The story could be put into as much as five chapters (so that it'd be "Revenge, Race, Peace, Pain, and something involving how blood and national feuds carry on to the next generation). They could have gone into Skulls Face's backstory a lot more, for example. And adding several additional missions for before Mission 51. And more exploration of themes, for example how low humans can sink in certain conditions. One element can be switching between Venom Snake and Big Boss on their separate stories.
2) Locations, a lot more and much more detailed. I got to thinking about this while playing the Uncharted series recently, like they have a lot more variety to their locations. And also these locations are much bigger in scale, like they actually feel like you're there. For example, a sequence set in a Colombian city has lots of people, like it's being used, instead of say the Mfinda oilfield in MGSV. Or even like in the old Mercenaries game for PS2, I don't know. There is a tiny sense of this in the hospital escape sequence. Here are some locations I'd add: A rail yard or two, a few whole cities and lcoations that are fully explorable. I'm going to probably go overboard here, but bear with me. Locations such as London, Tokyo, Moscow, Beijing, Pyongyang, Chicago, Baltimore, Barcelona, Beirut, Belfast, Boston, Copenhagen, Dallas, Washignton DC, Delhi, Detroit, Dublin, Haiti, Havana, Istanbul, Kignston, Las Vegas, Texas, Long Island, Los Angeles, Manila, Mexico City, Miami, Mumbai, New Orleans, Paris, Pittsburgh, Portland Oregon, Rome, Singapore, Stockholm, Tehran, tel Aviv, Trinidad, Rio de Janiero, Brussels, Addis Ababa, Baghdad, Bogota, Lagos, and Montevideo, Uruguay. And some other ideas too(plurals just to be safe): Hotels and motels, train stations, nightclubs, marketplaces, Indonesia, mangrove swamps, settlements, caves, mines, back alleys, research facilities, hydroelectric dams, crash sites, skyscrapers, trains, construction sites, lush forests, mills, R&D places, sewer systems, military forts, depots, refineries, tropical resorts, ship fleets, small town main streets, suburbs, farmland, churches, black markets, concrete walled checkpoints, slums, building ruins, subways, office buildings, schools, refugee camps, flooded areas, mountain ranges, Wyoming-like forests, universities, megastores, lakeside resort towns, snowy forests, highways and freeways, icy wastelands, desert expanses, prisons, mansions, amusement parks, Chernobyl, theaters and opera houses, tanker ships, ruined castles, casinos, island resorts, mental asylums, national parks, Cold War bunkers, Korean Demilitarized Zone, submarine bases, nuclear plants, savannas, jungle guerrilla camps, gulags, Cambodian-Vietnamese border, Sino-Vietnamese border regions, Guatamela (mountain forests and cities), Shining Path bases, Malaysia, Kashmir, Iran-Iraq border, Ethiopia, swamps, mountain peaks and lodges, American deserts, island bases, rain forests, the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego (it's a very nice hotel) and villages.
3) More characters, and those already there get much more personality and backstory. For example, characters such as the Spetznaz commander and the CFA executive would get names, and new characters could be some such as US agents outside of Cipher's controls, looking to continue the Cold War espionage status quo and take out both Diamond Dogs and XOF. More factions too, such as battling UNITA instead of just their private forces.
4) Missions. A lot more, and not the done-in-three-minutes ones that are in the game. Again, some inspiration from the Uncharted series and the hospital sequence (as well as some sequences in Code Talker and Metallic Archaea missions), as well as the first four Solid games. More variety, lot more connected to the story, and the lengths expanded, to almost the time for an MGS4 act for each. And get rid fo the ranking system at the end of each mission, it takes away from total strategic freedom in completing the missions. And more "set piece missions" like the REX usage in Guns of the Patriots. Some examples of missions and mission types to include: Firefights with XOF, infiltrating the middle of an open battlefield, sneaking through a hotel to avoid XOF scouts within, surviving a white phosphorus mortar strike (taken from Spec Ops The Line), more boss battles, psychological operations on a client's behalf, coverly helping Big Boss find materiel to build Outer Heaven, assassination missions, sabotage, recon, search and destroy, anti-air battles, using anti-air turrets for a long time (like in Jak II), stowing away on a C130 supply aaircraft, intel retrieval, street long firefights (two examples to come to mind Three Leaf Clover in GTA 4, and that Hue City mission in Call of Duty Black Ops), Lone Wolf and Cub-style sub-story of revenge (it's not what Kojima envisioned, but would be awesome to include), smuggling, torture missions, acquiring of field safe houses, COINTELPRO-like stuff, raids, hsotage rescue, hijacking and fighting on a moving train, convoy rail shooter, more detailed village capture, economic warfare, finding out about the CIA's Special Activities Division, covert action paramilitary operations, nuclear espionage, helping Amanda against the Contras, battling body-snatchers develoepd by the USA or USSR or someone, using a humanitarian organization to gather info on XOF, counterterror ops, interrogating XOF soldiers with methods such as waterboarding (as Ocelot), searching places where Cipher is experimenting on humans, terrorist attacks and methods (such as conventional, urban bombings, and unconventional, bioterror), wanton destruction, hostage taking, fighting a force engaged in genocide and rape, leading a massacre in a civilian building to take out several high-ranking Cipher officials (mirroring that of XOF in Cyprus), escorting an HVT through a trap-filled forest or city, sabotaging an ammunition depot, return too Camp Omega to steal files regarding Cipher's covert strike forces, escaping a Soviet bloc prison and then state secret police in the streets, escaping Kowloon Walled City from an XOF ambush, vigilante actions against crime lords and such (Batman or Punisher style, you pick), and rescuing a young Naomi and Frank Hunter.
5) Gameplay. Make it not so expensive to use stuff. Add new stealth modes.
6) Restore all the stuff that was cut from the game (list from NeoGaf): - "80's Filter": Removed for being system-intensive. - Camp Omega Special Mission (E3 2013 Trailer): Unused for unknown reasons. - P.T Active Decoy ("Lisa") (2014 TGS gameplay presentation): Presumably cut for relationship to the cancelled "Silent Hills" project. - Missing Delivery Point Invoices (missing locations?): Removed for unknown reasons. - Usable Battle Gear during free-roam (Piggyback Collector's Edition strategy guide): Removed for balance reasons. - "Burned/Skull Boss" Model (Kojima 2015 Launch Trailer): Unused for unknown reasons. - Africa Burning Village Cutscene (E3 2014 trailer): Removed for unknown reasons. - Africa Child Soldier Training Cutscene: Unused for unknown reasons. - TGS 2014 Africa Mission (TGS 2014 gameplay presentation) - Mission 46 Unused Dialogue (found in game files) - "Mission 51" Unused Mission (found on CE Blu-Ray disc) - Unused/unknown alternate costumes from the leaked script, including "Foxtrot". "Sandstorm", "Realtree", "Panther", "MGS3 Naked", "MGS3 Sneaking" and "MGS3 Tuxedo", along with buddy uniforms like "Horse_Parade" and "Horse_Western". Removed for unknown reasons.
And some more stuff I forgot to add to that list: Gameplay: Some mechanics that could've been in the game and improved from Peace Walker, and in general, such as the ability to lead a team of soldiers on stealth missions in the field, arena-like heavy combat, sneaking through a whole giant structure like in the first two Solid games, and even more CQC moves. More gadgets and tools that are automatically taken into the field, or not, such as a prototype grapple, charger, flashlight on the chest, upgradebale backpack, gas mask, first aid kits, and a Swiss Army Knife. Destructible environments, and a mechanic that shows the world around you degrading in relaton to destruction and resource farming you cause (for example, using missile launchers instead of tranq guns menas a forest area will be bombed out for a while). Bringing back lockers to hide bodies in. Bringing a sense of scale on top of the already large world, like say a Call of Duty game , or the Uncharted series, where it looks really big. Hiding in rafters, blind fire ability, other stuff. Lot more enemy types (based on things like Digimon, X-Mne legends, Jak and Ratchet series), but also more individual and unique personalities for them. "Demon Mode", a mode where a hallucinating Venom Snake is able to inflict much more damage on the environment and people around him, while taking on a bloodstained apearance similar to Demon Snake, and the environment looks like fire and hell on earth. Use of environmental hazards to take down enemies, such as windows about to burst in a storm, and bashing an enemy into a generator to kill them, and also ledge takedowns. Ability to pick up bricks and bottles for distraction or combat, and basball bats, pipes, crowbars, old boards, machetes, hatchets and swords for combat uses. More climbale walls and cliffs, alogn with building climbing and wire hanging. Play as Ocelot, and thinking of Mortal Kombat X where Troy Baker played Erron Black, a whole roster of playable characters available once you complete certain missions, each with a wholly different playign style to Snake (not like Mortal Kombat where everyone has the same health and button control scheme). Exponentially more options of how to complete a mission to make it "total strategic freedom". Bringing back health and stamina bars. And the ability to swim. More airstrike variety too. Ability to lure certain factions into the same area and have them fight it out. Mother Base's customization increased exponentially, and the ability to have to defend it rather than the FOBS in person. Get rid of the Extreme versions of missions, but since doen correctly they're kind of cool, make them into challenge mode kind of thing. Some original Subsistence missions, or something like surviving on limited supplies like in The Last of Us. Creatures like kaiju. "Skull mode" where Venom hallucinates himself as Skull Face, as a method of covering his own guilt at his actions.
Missions: Some possibles: Raiding a UNITA or MPLA camp to free child soldiers; assassinaitng a country's minister of something; huntnig down XOF and Cipher officials and hight value targets (for example an enforcer for Cipher who ensures. through blackmail or force, that a certain nation will secretly stay in Cipher's good graces); escorting a group of injured POWs deep in an enemy forest to an LZ due to losing your stash of Fulton devices; destroying jammers in a city area so an airstrike can be called in; clearing out a port in a war zone city for a client; escaping from a city in the midst of a serious riot; sabotaging guard towers and ICBM launchers ar a missile site; destroying a series of tunnel entrances; infiltrating a remote base where Cipher is developing new weapons of mass destruction and superguns; crossing through a trench line to sabotage soemthing; explore the Cyprus hospital once again to find some intel XOF did not know about before they realize it; infiltrate a nuclear reatcor complex; Venom heading out into the Afghan desert to find any sign of Quiet's remains, all while trying to hold in his pain at losing her; boss battle with a parasite-infected lizard that escaped from one of Skull Face's facilities;
Story: For one, lot of themes, such as gangsterism of big nations in history; the roles and purposes of nations; causes of wars such as greed and arrogance and revenge; the loss of original reasons for wars over time until they just exist; economic troubles; authoritarianism; drugs usage; the seeds of chanegs that contribute to the end of the Cold War; America's superpower status and moral self-righeousness (like in the original story plan); fatalism and nihilism at a world secretly controlled by forces and thugs beyond anyone's control; desperation of humanity to survive; the cusp of a much more techno world, as seen in the rest of the games set after this. Go more into the Metal Gear universe, its history, topics such as Skull Face's corruption and how Diamond Dogs helped shape world history. A lot more going into the themes of PAIN and RACE AND REVENGE, as well as how the first Big Boss becomes a giant prick, woven into the story structure. A lot of subplots to add to the main story, and I'll go hog wild here if I can with some ideas: 1)The return of the biological son of the original Bog Boss and a local prostitute from a brothel trip made by Jack and some of his friends before he shipped off to Korea, now intent on finding and meeting his father. 2) Diamond Dogs finds itself teaming up with a splinter group form Cipher, "the Purifiers", who believe in the original goal of Cipher but not the methods and what ever it's become nowm and a fragile alliance begins (and does eventually end). 3) Diamond Dogs goes up against another Cipher-controlled organization, this one much more like a covert mafia or corrupt multinational corporation, using blackmail, bribes, graft, threats, even hiring private military contractors in war zones who officially work for actors in the regions, but ultimately answer to the organization's economic and power interests (kind of like the RDA and mercs in Avatar). 4) A new mutation of the parasite emerges after the Shining Lights incident, which produces even more zombie-like effects, and the Dogs get into conflict with a rogue PF army that is looking to take it and use it themselves. 5) Flashbacks to such things as Kaz's flashbacks set before the game, in places like Grenada and Northern Ireland. 6) More confrontations with Skull Face, including sneaking into on of his bases, in the process learning a lot mroe about his earlier self. 7) Small short non-missions showing how Diamond Dogs and its obsession with destroying XOF and Cipher is having adverse consequences on members, their lives, etc.
